Worst thing that ever happened to you on IMDb?

This was around 2008 or 2009... I had maintained a very steady IMDb account, was contributing reviews, etc.

I was getting a bit annoyed at trolling, but I noticed nothing much was actually done about it, in comparison to moderating regular users.

I made a reply in a topic on that Help board outlining how IMDb has no actual reason to ban trolls on a regular basis (just here and there), because their constant presence and all the responses to them guarantee a higher traffic rate, which is good for pulling in advertising dollars.

My entire posting history was wiped in less than 30 minutes. I had to reauthenticate as well.

I then removed all my reviews and vowed to never contribute another thing to IMDb.

I rarely used the general discussion message boards. I did use the message boards for individual movies and tv shows quite a bit. I'd go so far as to say they were one of my favorite part of the world wide web. Alas, they took it away. They also burned the library in Alexandria. there you have it.

reply

your posting history should be here, for the most part. the site originator pulled posting histories in, bless him.

I got into a heated argument with a guy who clearly didn't understand how Rotten Tomatoes calculated their scores. He deleted his posts, but mine are still there, so I suppose that means he admits defeat.

Got myself into some drunken arguments on the night of Brexit, not my finest hour.

reply

LOL, I feel ya!

Getting that red warning message at the top before posting. I had no clue what incited it and what it could lead to. I was afraid to get banned over nothing.

Once in a while I would get stalked or verbally abused like any other IMDb member. The worst thing I came across, but didn't happen to me personally, was the Full House board. Absolute horror. The trolls residing there were just completely pathetic.

reply

Who knew Full House generated such passion. πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”

reply

That show was maddening sometimes, especially the character of Michelle. But these people were insane. They'd been trolling the boards for 10 years. They stalked and harrassed an autistic member and posted her identity online. Maybe it was just one insane person with several sock accounts.

reply

Maybe it was Dfeet. Don't answer I don't want to get you in trouble. πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

I see another call-out thread on FB coming!πŸ˜†

now known as feetboards. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

My thoughts and prayers are with all the other FB members during this difficult time. My deepest sympathy.

Yeah there were a few random boards with nutty, aggressive squatters who considered the board their "territory," but I'd never heard of the Full House horde. Seems a bit random.

reply

Man that thing was the fecking worst. Had that happen to me a slew of damn times.

reply

that's horrible.

reply

I personally interpreted it as an acknowledgement that I was correct. I forgot to mention that I had to reauthenticate, but I added that.

I believe I also fully deleted that account and used a new one with my new authentication info... But I don't remember 100%.

reply

Worst thing was getting history wiped and also time constraints on posting. Something like 5 minutes between posts. I had to create a new account.

What drove me crazy was all the posts I do that would end up getting deleted. The moderators were too power drunk I think.

reply

This is a great thread. I forgot how much IMDb sucked toward the end. I don't miss it so much anymore.

reply

Also you'd go to a board and there are is only 1-2 pages of comments, despite the movie being popular and 10+ years old. You couldn't see what people had posted going very far back.

reply

so the imdb's resort for corrective was to delete a poster's ENTIRE history ?

that seems mindlessly brutal. i had over a decade of posting history there, that would have been very hard to take, if it had happened to me.

i just wished we could have hooked our imdb posts here with the new ones at mc.

reply

A lot of people in those days would get wiped for minor reasons, though realistically we were never told a reason. It would just happen.

reply

I once had like... I think a nine-minute posting quota. I'm pretty sure it was nine minutes. I had forgotten about that, until another person on this thread mentioned something about the posting quota. I don't remember why that happened. I pissed somebody off, obviously, but I don't recall how. It must have been like 9 or 10 years ago now. The posting quota slowly, very slowly went back down to one minute, though I don't think it ever again reached 30 seconds. I think I ended up deleting that account. My current IMDb account was made in 2011, and it never had a high posting quota, so this would have been a year or two earlier than that, back when I engaged in a lot more stupid arguments than I later did.
