Have you ever gotten away with wearing casual clothing at a formal dining place?

As a guy, the most casual clothing I've worn in a formal dining setting was a button-up long-sleeved shirt and jeans I think. I think the dress code for guys is more lenient in restaurants....

Yes, I had spent the day at a stable, and was wearing an old plaid shirt and had mud on my boots, and a well-off friend took some of us to a very good restaurant in a rich neighborhood for dinner.

She was something of an etiquette wonk and assured us that "Riding gear is always considered acceptable, everywhere", presumably because riding horses has always been associated with money. Apparently that's still true, because we got a table and nobody even looked at us. Or maybe we just had enough chutzpah to pass as rich.

Hehe...interesting!

reply

Hm. Apparently I'm the only person here who either eats at fancy restaurants, or has chutzpah in real life.

Anyone else?

reply

Yes, I wore a bikini at McDonald's. Nobody had a problem with that.

reply

Ooh nice! hehe

reply

That's what everybody else said!

what did you order ??

reply

Hotcakes & Sausage, of course!

reply

did the 17 year old kid behind the counter make you pay ??

reply

When do they ever?!

reply

Yes, but I was always the guest of well dressed people with money. I've never tried getting through the door by myself dressed like a hobo. I should imagine i'd have a hard time getting through the door.
