Remakes of classic songs that surpass the original?

Devo's "Satisfaction."

Johnny Cash 'Hurt'
Jimi Hendrix 'Along the Watchtower'

Johnny Cash's "Personal Jesus."

Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode are my two favourite bands of all time, and I don't like country music, so my opinion is contrary to the one widely held regarding Cash's covers of 'Hurt' and 'Personal Jesus'. I won't make rude remarks about Johnny Cash, but his voice isn't particularly appealing to me.

reply

Understandable. He's not for everyone.

reply

I was just gonna write Hurt.

And yes to the Along the Watchtower.
One of my favorite Jimi Hendrix’s songs.

I don't know if you'd consider this a remake since it was never recorded, but back in the mid to late 70's, Bruce Springsteen used to do a live cover of The Animals' It's My Life, accompanied by a four to five minute story about his father.

Here's one such version from New Year's Eve, 1975 … https://youtu.be/wHv_msPx6Po

Straight No Chaser's "All About That Bass."

Manfred Mann's version of Bruce Springsteen's Blinded by the Light

Beck's version of The Korgi's Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime

Bobby Fuller Four's version of "I Fought the Law."

Granted, this isn't the Stones most classic song, but the Toots and the Maytals version of "Start Me Up" blows the original out of the water.

EDIT: I can't believe I forgot to mention this one. "Louie Louie" by Don and the Goodtimes.

For those who may not know The Kingsmen version was not the original. It was written by Richard Berry.

Berry in turn was inspired by the opening riff from this song
