What do you think of Denny's Restaurant?

Me I consider Denny's Restaurant to be a hit and miss, at times it can be good and other times not so good, the food seems to be better than the service of all the experiences I've had at Denny's.

Racist!

I remember there being some sort of hoopla over widespread racial discrimination at Denny's in the 90s. I personally knew someone who filed a lawsuit and won.

Still happening today

They are still getting over having to stop being Sambo's.

Denny's is more of an late night or all night hangout for people who want to eat and congregate somewhere. I like it for that, but the good is hit or miss as you said. When it is good it is a nice surprise.

We used to have a chain in CA called Lyons which was a lot like Denny's. I think it was better than Denny's, but the same idea. It is better than going to a drive-thru like McD's and hanging around outside or in your cars.

The Lyons we had around here had a bar attached to it. Not that it means the food was better, but it seemed more of an adult place to go, especially in the evening. But yeah, mostly a family restaurant with predictable fare and medium portions at reasonable prices. They don't give it away, but it's casual dining and the presentation should be comfortable.

reply

Yeah, you're right, Lyon's had a bar in it. Overall I think the food was better than Denny's. Sadly, at least around here in my local area all the Lyon's closed one by one. I miss them.

reply

Yeah, ours closed too. I had a friend who was an a.m. cook there. He'd party all Friday night then power into work on Saturday morning. Later, I ran into someone who also worked at Lyons, and asked if she knew my friend. She thought about it for a few moments, then her eyes widened and she blurts out his full name. She then said how they would get into verbal fights during the shift and when the shift was over, she'd buy him a drink and everything was fine.
She was also the only person I've met who could speak Portugese, but I'm getting way off topic.

reply

Those Portugese ;-)

I remember Lyon's because it was a place where my family would get together. Also I would play backgammon with my cousin in the bar for drinks and learned to be pretty good backgammon'er.

Never been there

I haven't been there in decades, as there isn't one near me. I prefer Bob Evans and IHOP anyway.

Denny's has been expanding into Canada and just opened one in my neighborhood. I will try it out.

My favorite thing to get there is the T-bone dinner (Medium Rare) with mashed potatoes and corn! The milkshakes are great, too!

When I think of Denny's, I think of IHOP, I think of Shari's (a regional thing? Idk). I remember hanging out in a Denny's for hours drinking coffee because I was having car trouble. They were nice enough to let us take up a booth for much of the afternoon. I'm surprised my GF didn't just put her head down on the table and crash. She did not have energy under adverse conditions.

But mostly I remember at one of our local Denny's the director Bob Rafelson directed Jack Nicholson and cast in the most famous scene in the movie Five Easy Pieces. Jack wants a Tuna Sandwich on Toast, hold the Butter. The waitress says there are No Substitutes. Jack asks again, and she states he cannot have this order. Finally he orders Tuna Salad with Toast on the side without Butter. Incredulous, she says you want Toast w/o Butter? He says Yes ! I want you to hold it between your KNEES! and proceeds to get pissed off.
I may have some small details wrong, but this does capture the gist of it. And it was filmed at our own little Denny's not 10 miles from here, Five Easy Pieces, (at least that scene was). I suspect the place hasn't changed much since then -- and it was a heck of a lot more than 20 years ago ! (Different thread.)

The menu looks interesting, especially the breakfast items.
