Do you miss IMDb?

IMDb shut down the forums after Trump won the election in 2016. All of us ought to be upset with Amazon and maybe even leftist polictics more broadly. But the more I read discussions here, it seems like many people are actually happy to be evicted. So what's going on here?

http://takimag.com/article/lessons-from-my-porn-girl/

"Sarah Silverman, Jimmy Kimmel, Amy Schumer…did they fight for the right to continue telling the race- and gender-based jokes that made them famous? Of course not. As leftists, they agree that some hurty speech needs to be suppressed, so they happily denounced their old work."
"Free speech matters to us. It doesn’t matter to them. Because their side doesn’t need it."
"We’re the ones who need the social-media platform, because we’re the people who don’t have the “mainstream” media and the D.C. establishment as our front men. So go ahead, deplatform leftists as they deplatform us. It won’t inhibit them. They have an entire party of activist politicians (and many in the opposing party, too) and the “mainstream” press on their side. They don’t need social media. Whereas for us, social media was a last gasp, a final chance to be heard. So if “we all go down” on social media, both sides don’t lose. The left still wins."
"Think in terms of Muslim suicide bombers. When the enemy hates your life more than it values its own, “a scalp for a scalp” doesn’t work."

Hollywood potentially loses a lot of money on movies that get bad word of mouth, like new Ghostbusters, or new Star Wars which still made a lot of money but should have easily made much more. I think people should be very angry about this. I always hope for the big blockbusters to flop. These people have everything and they're still picking away at us.

MovieChat is a lot like IMDB but better.

leaving your wingnutisms aside (i actually don't know what you are going on about, and don't care),

this place has everything i need in a movie forum - the imdb repository from years past, a place for it to continue to grow. its non-commercial, has a very nice community.

what's lacking, what's not to like?

imdb is still there for us to acquire the essentials of films, its cast/personnel, a few user reviews - that's all i use it for. the forum was always a completely separable aspect. threw me for a loop when it happened, but that has now been remedied.

so its all good. for me, anyway.

What I miss about IMDB is the numbers. Posting in I Need to Know would generally get an answer pretty quick. Here, not so much.

reply

I agree. Say if someone did not understand an ending of a movie (or just wanted to talk about it) on the old IMDb you would get an answer fast. Or if you wanted to discuss an actor or actress you could. Like sslssg said, here, not so much.

this is all true. that is the big loss, the community loss. took me months and months to find this place, some are still trickling in.

too bad imdb couldn't have put in a link to this place, reached some sort of cooperative arrangrment. but that would, of course, entail commercialization/bucks/ads.

maybe more promotion on social media....

one minor complaint i have is that forum users can't wire their new/same forum username to the their old/same imdb user name. that would be cool.

reply

True especially for older movies. New movies have some decent chats going on here.

reply

I miss the format. Much more user friendly.

I missed IMDb message boards at first. There didn't seem to be good alternative to them. I've only just got onto Moviechat in the last few weeks. It is the best compensation for losing the old boards that I've found.

I didn't sign into IMDb at all in the fist couple months after the boards shut down. But I go on there nearly every day now. I do the polls. I publish lists. And of course it's the best place for movie information.

reply

Kind of, although this is quite close to imdb - as someone else pointed out, it's basically the numbers that's lacking so the individual boards are a little slow to heat up discussion wise.

reply

I'll always miss IMDb. I used that place the way others use facebook.

reply

Yeah, me too.
I really miss the traffic on the older shows and films..There's really nothing anymore quite like it..

reply

A little bit. Would miss it more if we didnt have Moviechat. Its nice to be able to come here after seeing a new movie and finding discussions about it.
