or you have a compulsion, since i didnt ask about any of that. time will tell...
shareSorry about that! We try to keep him in a deep dark hole...sometimes he escapes😕
There is an interesting article that I read a while back...I'll try to find it. The owner Jim used different methods from orthodox means to utilizing archive.org I believe. Let me see what I can scrounge up👍
thanks much! i'd contributed to the imdb forums for over ten years and about died when i found it all gone, and then was reborn when i found most of the content, including my own, here.
it would be great if users using the same handle could have their old content linked with the new, by the way - as in, be notified concerning replies to old posts.
I was happy to find this place too. There is at least one other site (filmboard.com) that acquired IMDb’s message board database, but this site looks more like the old IMDb boards.
I have no idea how they acquired all the old posts as well as the actual boards and structure. Maybe there is an explanation somewhere on this site.
I'm curious too. It is pretty cool, I did join IMDB V2 after the original IMDB shutdown but that was just a normal forum without dedicated pages for each TV show, Movie, Actor etc. It is also troll infested so I ended up leaving.
I only came across this site a few weeks back.
I believe an algorithm was programmed to scrape the posts and basic structure, which was publicly accessible.
There are also downloadable archives, but they had to be scraped too.
I seem to recall something to the effect that IMDb made the board content available to anyone who wanted to archive it. After all, they were going to just dump them in the trash, so to speak. I also remember some folks were concerned that MC would be in trouble for using them (copyright issues) but Jim assured us it was not an issue.
sharethat makes sense. i probably wasn't on the forums during the time when notice had been given that there was going to be a shutdown, so only found out about it after they were gone, which was a bad day.
decent of them to provide the archives, would have been derelict of them not to.
