Do you consider a "pet" a "friend"?

I don't have what's considered a "pet" currently, but I just want to see what other people think.

I don't think pet's can be friends, but rather companions. Friends implies that you all go to the pub together to have a cold one.

I guess it all depends. People can consider pets friends, family, helpers. Whatever works.
