Favourite western movie...

I haven't watched too many westerns. I need to watch more. "3:10 to Yuma" (the remake)

Update: I recently watched "The Bravados" and "Rio Lobo."

True Grit (also the remake.)

I need to see those. I can only recall seeing 3:10 to Yuma.

reply

Watch the original 3:10 to Yuma it is a lot better without stupid ending.

John Wayne "The Searchers" is very good, lots of Jimmy Stewart westerns are also really good.

Decided to watch Bend of the River this morning which starred Jimmy Stewart ; good entertainment. I've always enjoyed the Technicolor look of many of those old 50s movies. Plus, that feature was coupled with some great cinematography, filmed in Oregon.

"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is one of my top two favorite movies of all time.

reply

I love how the film just completely destroys any and all romanticism associated with the western genre, which is ironic given the film's iconic status today. A rugged life makes rugged people.

reply

Same here, Kawada. I also liked "Once upon a Time in the West", Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", and "The Wild Bunch". I liked "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" best, however, as far as Westerns go.

"My Name is Nobody" (1973), starring Terrance Hill and Henry Fonda, is one of heck of hoot, a laugh from start to finish. It's a comedic take of the west and many of the classic old west cliché's, from the fast gunslinger, to the lone outsider who does heroic deeds. It has a lot of heart too, can't help but like the main character. If you love the genre, you'll love this fine gem.

I'm definitely gonna have to watch it. I was already interested because Henry Fonda was in it, but your description heightens my interest further. Sounds like a good movie.

Don't know if we are talking about Peter or Henry Fonda, but a great Western film is Once Upon A Time In The West. What's really cool is Hank plays a baddie -- hope that's not a spoiler ! It's really not a surprise once he appears, which is pretty early in the movie.

All the Sergio Leone (with Ennio Morricone soundtrack) westerns are worth watching.

I don't watch the genre as often as I used to. Last night I decided to watch Chato's Land which I was unfamiliar with. It featured Charles Bronson as a half-breed Apache and he was impressive looking in that role. It was surprisingly better than I expected.

reply

I was also surprised at how gritty it was
Buried treasure for sure!

The Searchers 1956

reply

It's kind of kooky, but literally, my favorite western is the recent Lone Ranger with Armie Hammer

reply

"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is phenomenal
"The Quick and The Dead" is my guilty-pleasure

There is more than one Western titled TQATD. The more recent is with Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, DiCaprio, and a whole bunch of others. The earlier one is with Sam Elliott, Tom Conti and Krate Crapshaw. (Nothing against KC, just goofin' with her name.) The Elliott movie is pretty good and much less contrived than the Stone. Much lower budget, but it's a basic meat-n-potatos Western. I prefer it for repeated viewing over the Stone / Hackman, et al.

You know, I don't mind The Quick and the Dead. It's got heavy flaws, but there's some really solid stuff in there. The confrontation near the end with Hackman and DiCaprio I find really great - there's a real drama going on there. Sharon Stone, not so much... And I felt like they didn't really do a good job fleshing out Russell Crowe's pacifist streak terribly well.
