I used to get nervous in public places such as restaurants.

I would dread going to places like restaurants because I would get very nervous, especially if there were any attractive girls around. I was always thinking about what other people think of me (and still do.) My nervousness would consist of me blushing and tearing up at the eyes.

That doesn't happen to be very much anymore, but I remember when that was a pain to deal with.

I recently worked security at a concert in a park (no seats, stand wherever) and was surprised when a few had to ditch the concert and friends as they were having panic attacks due to being around so many people.

reply

Yeah, it's fairly common I think.

My best advice would be to just put yourself out there. Avoiding situations like that will make your anxiety worse. If your in public and start to feel panic - OWN IT! Its your body and you get to decide how you want to feel. Remember YOU are the one in control.
I'd also avoid anxiety meds if you can. They are helpful initially, but can cause bigger problems down the road.

I used to feel very uncomfortable working on checkout and having to talk to strangers, particularly those asking questions about my personal life. Nothing creepy but it felt weird. Perhaps because I was raised not to talk to stranger so why does me checking out someone’s grocies change that?

Also talking to a very attractive girl made me very nervous.

I got over it eventually. My problem now is coming across as uninterested so I try to sound more outgoing.

Yeah, I've been going to bars and dancing with other people if there's a dance floor available. Restaurants aren't that much of a problem anymore.

I've never been comfortable in crowded places such as restaurants, concerts, sporting events, parties, bars, etc. I can't say that I've had a reaction like you described, but the older I get, the more I realize that it's perfectly okay to skip events that I don't like or dread attending. Life is too short to spend time doing things you really don't like.

reply

Yeah, I agree. But I don't mind social events that much anymore.
