WWII Movies

I'm really fascinated by the Second World War. What movies should I watch? Narrative or documentary is fine. The ones I've watched the most are Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, Schindler's List, and Empire of the Sun. I'm realizing now that's 3 Spielberg movies. What should I watch?

reply

So many. Here are two that haven’t been mentioned but are worth watching.

Windtalkers

Conspiracy - Kenneth Branagh

On a different note there is the movie The Final Countdown, which is the story of a modern aircraft carrier transported back to Dec. 6, 1941 and their dealing with the problem of whether or not to change the course of history and intervene in the attach on Pearl Harbor the next morning.

Two great choices, I'd add Sam Peckinpah's "Cross Of Iron" for the other perspective.

reply

Thanks, Yep Cross of Iron is a good pick as well.

Since you mentioned documentaries, I'm going to suggest The World at War.

I found this to be a very comprehensive, informative and well done documentary of the war.
Be forewarned though, it requires a great investment of your time as it consists of 26 episodes, each one clocking in at 54 minutes long.

"The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit" is a good movie about returning to life in the US after WWII, and also certain personal consequences for the main character from what happened during his time in the European Theater.

I rather enjoyed Anthropoid - it's about the real life assassination attempt on the third highest ranking German officer, during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. And as someone already mentioned, Downfall was really good. One of my all-time favorites, however, is The Longest Day, despite it's many faults and attempts to sugarcoat the tragedies of war.

The Longest Day 1962
Stalag 17 (1953)
Sahara (1943)

Dunkirk
The Dirty Dozen
