Scariest Real Life Moment

Was it life and death? Was it a close call? Was it a scary movie?
No clean underwear? Forgot to shut off the coffee maker?
Was it your first time taking a flight and then the plane crashed down?
Or is that a little too ironic? Don’t you think?

One of mine is when I was managing a Blockbuster way back in the day.
I saw a car pull into the parking lot and turned to park. I heard a squeal
and looked up to see the car jump the curb heading for the store.
I was in the vestibule next to the front doors. The car came crashing through the doors.
Fortunately I saw it soon enough and was able To jump over the counter.
The car finally stopped right where I was standing.
Alcohol was a factor!

What was the scariest moment you’ve had?

reply

I'm not sure I can recall the scariest moment I've had but I've died twice.

It doesn't seem to take though.

reply

I’ve noticed. Maybe you’re doing it wrong?

Eternal life may be a curse.
Good luck to you and all the future yous!

reply

My actual physical self has died twice.

Online I die daily.

I don't think it's eternal life, just good medicine being immediately available.

Quite the charm I should say.

reply

So you're saying actually died twice?

Some would say that would be scary in itself.
Although at the time I guess you really wouldn't know would you.

reply

Nope, on both occasions I found out afterwards and so had no fear or any of the kind of feelings that I've felt when I've actually been in a scary situation with foreknowledge.

As for scary moments I've been in more than a few of them over the years and I've felt a clear head and decisive leadership of the situation has always been the best form of action.

But I get that it doesn't always work out for everyone.

I've lost more than a few friends to people who haven't responded well to direct civility and hopes for best outcomes for all.

Maybe that'll be my future someday too - or anyone else's here, who knows?

reply

It sometimes seems that may be the future for all of us.

reply

We all die, it's just how I suppose.

I just hope mine is without fear.

My grandmother died in front of me in peace, not elegant or anything like that but close enough (I hope).

reply

Fear of death is a powerful thing for some.

I too hope that when the time comes it will be without fear and peaceful.
I also hope that I’ll be able to do what needed to be done if that situation ever came up.

reply

One that comes to mind for me happened when I was a senior in high school. It was near the end of the school year and I was allowed to drive the family car to school that day because I needed to get to the bank before it closed. In those days, the branch bank closed at 4 PM, and there was not enough time to take the bus home, take the car and get there before closing. One of my friends came with me, and I drove very cautiously past the nearby junior high that had just released students at the end of the day - kids, buses, and cars everywhere. Without warning, a car flew out of an alley and hit me broadside, right at the driver's door. Scared the bejeebers out of me! Even though it wasn't my fault, I was convinced my parents were going to kill me.

reply

Yikes, did you get hurt?
Did your parents get mad?

reply

Fortunately, no serious injuries - just some nasty bruises. No, they didn't really get mad - they knew it wasn't my fault, and I wasn't screwing around or anything.

reply

I could never picture a young GlenEllyn ever screwing around.
Now I'm not so sure! 😜

reply

Throwing up on my first date with a guy I liked, got drunk beforehand because i was nervous and threw up my pizza on the floor right where i was sitting. I laugh about it now though.

reply

That would be horrible for everybody involved.
In a car or maybe at the movies?

Could have been worse.
You could have thrown up on him.

reply

lol it was bad enough.

reply

At least you weren't kissing him!

reply

That's true, look on the bright side aye.

reply

I almost checked out at age 12 from pneumonia. It was August 1975 and what started as a summer cold ended in a 9 day hospital stay. I remember how worried everyone was and my mother seemed to be always there.

reply

Do you remember being scared at the time? At that age.

I bet it seemed that way because she was always there.

reply

I was scared. I remember doing a lot of crying. My oldest brother who was 10 years old than me and was living way up in northern Labrador also came home to visit. It was sort of strange to see him hanging around the hospital.

reply

After you said this I started thinking and realized I've never spent the night in a hospital other
than a couple days when I had my tonsils out. I don't even remember it.
Maybe I should have!

Since you were so you young are you now susceptible to respiratory problems ?

reply

No it was just a one time thing. Screwed up the whole summer. The extra attention was kind of nice however.

reply

I'm sure the attention was nice.
Kind of a dangerous way to get it though.

Getting sick in the summer is just the worst. In the winter you expect it but
during the summer it just plain sucks.

reply

My mother really laid the attention on for a few weeks after. It eventually went back to normal.

reply

It always goes back to normal doesn't it.
Even the "mom always liked you best" stuff.

The other day I was walking down to the liquor store and on the sidewalk was a cicada. Normally that would be no big deal, but I thought it was dead and suddenly it went BZZZZZZZT and had what appeared to be an epileptic fit. Right as my foot went by and yeah it spooked me.

reply

devastating Moose.

We have a huge stag behind our house in a wooded area. He is always seems to be in a foul mood.

reply

[deleted]

let me tell you a REAL scary story. Many moons ago I was drunkenly walking home one night and there was this giant spider in the middle of the sidewalk. So I ran up the sidewalk a bit and lo and behold there is another giant spider. A little bit up the way and there is another one! Day or two later I sober up and walk the same street in the daytime. Turns out spider figures have been spray painted all over the sidewalk. So that's my scary spider story.

reply

At first I thought you were going to say the scariest moment was when the liquor store was closed!
I've been there.
Glad you're safe.

reply

hi moose

reply

When I was a kid on a ferris wheel that got stuck. I was on the top with my brother.

reply

That has always been a fear of mine. To be stuck up there for a long time.
What if you needed to go to the bathroom!

How long were you up there?
Have you went on one since then?

reply

[deleted]

Head on collision.

reply

Yeah, I think that would qualify.

Any serious injuries?

reply

No fatalities. Multiple fractures, lacerations and internal injuries. Three months in hospital.

reply

That's a rough one.
A lot of people couldn't tell the story.
It's nice that you can.

reply

I couldn't recommend the experience. But I was fortunate to have what is not quite accurately called a "full recovery" thanks to the benefit of medical care in a first world country.

reply

A lot of people never even get the chance to get to the medical care part.
First world country or not.

I really am happy you were able to come through it.
It's a horrible experience but at least you have "great" story for life.
The important word being LIFE.

reply

Thanks for the kind words and on the whole I agree that life is better than the alternative.

When I was 2 years old, I was playing on stone wall and a large granite slab fell and broke my leg. Doctors said if it landed a little further up on my back, it would have killed me.

Another time as a teenager, I jumped off a pier not knowing there was a dock below. To this day I'm still surprised I came out of that incident with only a bruise...a rather large bruise. My poor leg can't seem to catch a break.

reply

Broke your leg when you were two?
It's fortunate you can still walk.

Are you tall or have long legs?

reply

Normal sized 2 year old. I was in a wheel chair for a while since I was too young of crutches. My parents kept the cast as a memento. My older brother was apparently jealous of all the attention I was getting, so he gave me a "haircut" lol.

reply

Parents keep everything don't they.
My mom kept my chicken pox scabs in my baby book. Doesn't get weirder than that.

LOL, sibling rivalry at its best!
I'm sure it was a very fetching haircut.

reply

Fetching, indeed! I need to find the pictures...A two year old sitting in a wheel chair, with a leg cast and a wild haircut hahaha!

reply

It's like the start of either a very good or very very bad horror movie!
It all depends on if it was in black in white or in color.

reply

That must have been one itty bitty wheelchair...
