What did you watch this week my ninjas?(07/29-08/04)

Hope y'all had a good week. Stay fresh and stay stealthy.

We are your friends (2015 TV):” Caught between a forbidden romance and the expectations of his friends, aspiring DJ Cole Carter attempts to find the path in life that leads to fame and fortune.” Weird title, good movie. It doesn’t take itself for something that it’s not. It never goes for cheap humour or over the top drama, which gives it a more genuine, real life feel. 6.5/10

Daddy’s Home 2 (2017 Netflix): The first one was Okay enough for me and my wife to give the sequel a shot. It was a headache inducing, painful movie with many characters saying many things that are of no interest to us really. The emotional ending felt forced but was somewhat charming. 4/10

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012 TV): I almost watched it completely over the course of three days but gave up on it. Not enough appeal for me. 2/10

In Too Deep (1999 DVD): This movie can be ridiculous at times, I admit it. E.g.: EVERYWHERE the undercover cop goes, people ask him “Are you a cop?” Also, EVERYBODY is looking for the mysterious gangster called GOD while he himself is running the streets constantly shouting “Im GOD bitches, remember it!” But beside all that, Im a sucker for this genre and I love watching Omar Epps acting. With a good script, he managed to portray the struggle of an undercover cop in the streets of Cincinnati very well. 7-7.5/10

The Mansion (2017 Netflix with Shogie): Yep, I watched this one with my man ShogunofYonkers and it was a lot of fun. As for the movie, there is nothing wrong with cartoonish characters as long as they are well played and in this case, the actors pulled it off with skillz so it made the whole silly thing work fine for me. I did not know any of the actors but I liked each one of them quick, especially that Ben Affleck-looking-pothead-with-the-beard and that wanna-be-actor-black-dude. The movie was funny with that French humour, but it was not scary and not that violent. It was gross at times though. (How about that snot scene huh Shogie!?) Anyways, I don’t know if Shogun enjoyed it as much as I did, I saw him with his mouth wide open a few times but Im not sure if he was yawning, trying to understand the dialogues or just in awe. My rating: 7/10

reply

I heard about your movie "date" with Shogie. Horror's not my thing, so more power to you and Shogie!

Gambit (2012) - Colin Firth and Alan Rickman are favorites of mine. As I said elsewhere on MC, I grabbed this DVD at my library the last time I was there. I wasn't aware of the mediocre rating it had when I picked it up. I think I watched about 20 minutes before I gave up on it. Stupid is the word that comes to mind. 4/10 not a fair rating, but based on what I saw that's the best I can do.

Midsomer Murders - (Netflix) - I'm on season 8 now. Still liking it! 7/10

Whitechapel - (2009-2013 DVD) - I watched just one episode and gave up. As I said in my other MC post, I didn't like the jumpy style – from here to there, and there – just bing, bing, bing. It drives me crazy when I can’t really see what this or that was. Much of the time the lighting was so dark I couldn’t really determine what was happening. I get that they want to set a dark, sinister mood, but sometimes it goes too far – certainly not the only show to do it. 6/10

Thank you, come again!

If you'd like to see JGL do the Frenchiest French accent that ever Frenched, The Walk's for you! lol

haha!!

Yours: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 6/10, stupid but entertaining enough. I might give the Mansion a go but the imdb page does not give me hope for its overall quality.

Baby Driver (2017 NetflixDVD): "After being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail." Stars: Ansel Elgort, Jon Hamm, Eiza González, Kevin Spacey 8/10.

Deadfall (2012 Netflix): "A thriller that follows two siblings who decide to fend for themselves in the wake of a botched casino heist, and their unlikely reunion during another family's Thanksgiving celebration." Stars: Eric Bana, Olivia Wilde, Charlie Hunnam 6/10.

Baby Driver: 7/10
13 Assassins: 8/10 (that little boy pissing in the puddle cracked me up)
Im a fan of Andy LAu but never heard of Casino Tycoon

As for the Mansion, besides the acting the Production Value impressed me a lot too.

reply

I had not heard of it either till I noticed it on Amazon Prime, then it appeared on Netflix recently so I went ahead and watched it there since Netflix does a better job with the quality of there streaming films. I swear if there is a terrible quality version of a film out there, that is the version Prime streams. Casino Tycoon 2 is on Prime and they were filmed i believe all at the same time and split into two films They work as a full story together. Both are 6/10.

reply

Yeah, Lau is a great actor that can tend on doing average films.

Hi there!

I only saw one of yours...ill get to that
First...

Logan Lucky (17) West Virginans commit a heist at a major NASCAR rally...Tatum, Driver and Craig were all great but i think the writers overcomplicated the heist and overwrote the script
Hilary Swank mailed it in and was wasted here
The last 15 minutes were not needed
7/10

Jungle (17) true jungle survival story with some tragedy and thrills...the forest primeval is an unforgiving hell!
Radcliffe has real acting chops and everyone else was good
The sketchy guide was suitably sinister
7.5/10

Raw (16) the French really know horror! This was gory, creepy and well acted and the music was very cool
I had no idea where this was headed
Nothing to criticize so...
10/10!

Sneaky Pete S2 (18) Ribisi is just killing it as a brilliant conman and the cast is pretty much keeping up with him...im halfway through
8/10 so far...

The Mansion (17) The French strike again with a horror comedy this time...
Really fun slasher elements, a good surprise or two, the characters were enjoyable goofballs and the humor mostly worked
One guy looked exactly like James Franco and i had to check that he wasnt lol
And yes, it was pretty gross!
Everyone talked really fast so i had to rewind in a few spots and im not sure that all of the subs translated very well but Really good stuff
8/10

Thx my man
Lets do it again sometime

reply

Hey man!

Raw: This is another coming of age story but this one is unlike any other. It’s like a group of people met behind my back to find all the things that could get to me and then made this film. Things that get under my skin, thing that give the bad shivers and things that make me close my eyes like a little girl. And none of these things were even related to the gore content. I can take gore, I enjoy gore. It’s small details like scratching yourself excessively, animals being tortured, close up on a fail bikini waxing, the interminable sound of a honking horn and so on. I don’t know if I should give this movie a 1 for fucking with me like that or a 10 for succeeding. I’ll just give it a good rating because all in all, it’s a good movie. 7/10

The MAnsion: Im so happy that you enjoyed it even more than I did! A few times I thought of you during the film, thinking '' I hope he gets most of the verbal jokes or else he wont be able to enjoy it.''
It's the ex-boyfriend that you mixed with Franco? What about the beard guy, dsen't he look a bit like Affleck? Anyways, I gave it a 10 on IMDB to help the score, maybe you should do it too. 4.7 is just ridiculous for the effort they all gave. Did you see the twist coming? I did not but found it to work very well.

We WILL do this again.

This week Im doing the evil dead movies

reply

Raw was disturbing...i love that sort of thing

The guy that shows up in the party van and breaks out in a dance...i thought holy crap is that Franco?
I paused the movie to check
Not Franco lol
Stoner guy was awesome, but i didnt see Affleck in him
The black actor dude was very funny

The Evil Deads are some of the most fun horrors ever
Enjoy!

reply

oooh yeah, that guy who wants a lap dance with no legs. I can see how you thought that.

Speaking of Franco, I'll let you know when Im down for The Vault or if I find another obscur movie on Netflix.

You do the same

reply

I dig Franco, hes very good
I will watch The Vault this week if you have time bro

Oh btw...did you notice im trying the
'rating' thing (x/10...) as you encouraged me to...
I fear i am awful at it lol but whatevers 'yo

Finally and sorry for the wall of text but this was a fun idea you came up with...
Pick another poster who has similar interests (horror, western, drama, comedy etc) and agree on a movie to watch and rate each week
Could be a cool weekly thread...i bet a few others would participate

reply

-Ok, I will try to fit The vault in this week.

-Yeah, I expected you to rate The Mansion only but you went that extra mile and it did not went unnoticed. Good job. Personally, rating is like an emotion for me. So the rating normally comes by itself, I don't think about it much. So maybe with time you'll get the hang of it too and find that you can't live without rating anymore. It's a disease, really.

-I actually done it first with my girl Mina... what is it we watched again?? I think it was John Wick 2. Not sure.
Maybe we could make a weekly thread that looks like: What movie do you plan on watching this week?
So like that we could match a few viewings among fellow moviechatterz.

I like the idea.

reply

Are you guys proposing a movie watching thing? I'm all for a movie watching thing, again. And, this time it might succeed, because you're actually good at motivating people to participate in things.

BTW, sounds like John Wick 2 was the movie we watched. But you know I don't remember things.

Hi!

The Warriors: A strange film indeed. 7/10

Movies:

-If the Shoe Fits (1990)
Awful, cheap-looking movie. Rob Lowe and Jennifer Grey were probably the best part of the movie, but I have no idea what they were doing in trash like this. I guess their careers were still affected by their scandals?

-The Mummy (1999)
Such a fun adventure comedy. A classic, in my opinion.

-The Seven Year Itch (1955)
The movie was pretty funny at times, but I really think the movie works better if Marilyn Monroe is also just part of his imagination.

-Pillow Talk (1959)
Cute movie and Doris and Rock have great chemistry. But there's no way I would've forgiven him in real life!

-The Swimmer (1968)
I understand that this is a classic, but it's too pretentious for my taste. I understand the symbolism, but it doesn't work that well on a literal level. And the babysitter scene was just weird and creepy!

-Friday the 13th (1980)
Silly, of course, and doesn't always make sense, but one of the better old school slashers.

TV Shows:

-Agatha Christie's Poirot - "Hercule Poirot's Christmas"

-The Flying Doctors - "Into the Future"
Gibbo died, but who cares! It was the last episode of season 1. On to season 2!

-Saved By the Bell - marathon

-The Love Boat - marathon
Well, darn it! I can't find any episodes in English beyond season 2. I guess I'm moving on to...

-CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - marathon
I haven't seen these early episodes since they originally aired. I don't remember a thing!

-The New Detectives - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-Buffy The Vampire Slayer - "The Zeppo" and "Bad Girls"

Next week will be another movie night week!

reply

Wow, thats a big mixed bag week you got there.

Mummy and friday the 13th I both saw but been too long to really remember.

reply

A mix this week and a few foreign movies

Seven Years in Tibet (1997) - True story of Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountain climber who became friends with the Dalai Lama at the time of China's takeover of Tibet. This movie shows clearly the acting limitations of Brad Pitt. The accent alone is cringeworthy. The movie is mediocre and now I know why I hadn't seen it earlier. 6/10

Out of the Furnace (2013) - When Rodney Baze mysteriously disappears and law enforcement doesn't follow through fast enough, his older brother, Russell, takes matters into his own hands to find justice. I had never heard of this movie before even with the big named cast - Bale/Harrelson/Whittaker/Dafoe/Sam Shepard. It also stars Casey Affleck who I thought was terrible as usual. The movie is a decent revenge flick with some stupid scenarios. 6.5/10

Extinction (2018) - A father has a recurring dream of losing his family. His nightmare turns into reality when the planet is invaded by a force bent on destruction. Fighting for their lives, he comes to realize an unknown strength to keep them safe from harm. A Netflix sci-fi production that was awful in my opinion. There is a twist on the alien invasion scenario but the movie is too hard to believe. 5/10

Kill List (2011) - Nearly a year after a botched job, a hitman takes a new assignment with the promise of a big payoff for three killings. What starts off as an easy task soon unravels, sending the killer into the heart of darkness. This movie has a cult following and I can see why. I thought the first half was really good but it just goes too far at the end. 6.5/10

Berlin Falling (2017) - When Frank offers Andreas a ride into Berlin out of courtesy he is certainly not aware that this decision will end up in a violent road trip for life and death. A timely movie involving Neo-Nazis and Muslim immigration in Germany. The movie concentrates on two characters and a car ride. This is German language. I thought it was well acted. 7/10

Kalifornia (1993) - A journalist duo go on a tour of serial killer murder sites with two companions, unaware that one of them is a serial killer himself. Not a bad road trip crime movie. Pitt plays a character similar to Tyler Durden. A good performance from Michelle Forbes (where is she now ?). I enjoyed it and would give it 7/10.

9th Company (2005) - Young Soviet Army recruits are stuck in the bloody war in Afghanistan, that was started by politicians. Based on a true story and a very well done war movie on the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. The movie is brutal all around but well worth the watch. This is a Russian language movie. Thanks to Dirty Barry for the recommendation. 8/10

The Lives of Others (2006) - In 1984 East Berlin, an agent of the secret police, conducting surveillance on a writer and his lover, finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed by their lives. A German movie which won the Oscar for Best Foreign film. This is a captivating movie with an insightful look at the terrible East German regime. 8.5/10

Wake in Fright (1971) - After a bad gambling bet, a schoolteacher is marooned in a town full of crazy, drunk, violent men who threaten to make him just as crazy, drunk, and violent. The word I would use to describe this movie is unique. I can see why some Australians were upset with this movie and the overall depiction. It is a bit of a gem and I never heard of it until this week. Thanks to MovieMan for the recommendation. 8/10.

reply

a few favourites of mine on your list this week. i think lives of others is one of the great films of the century so far, a 5/5 from me for sure.
kill list is perhaps my favourite film of this century, but i certainly wouldn't claim it's as universally great as 'lives...'
& i like wake in fright quite a bit too.

reply

Seven Years in Tibet: Loved it as a teen and bought it recently but never saw it since. 8/10 for now

Out of the furnace: not great. 6/10

The lives of others: own it, need to watch it

Forgot KAlifornia that I like a lot: 7.5/10

reply

Gracious! I forgot one. 😧

The Endless Summer (1966) Documentary following two young surfers traveling around the world to find the perfect wave. Directed, written, and narrated by Bruce Brown, pioneer of surf films. I enjoyed this film; great cinematography, no special effects, no stuntmen, either. It's not a showcase of extreme surfing moves, but one of the simple gracefulness of surfing in the 1960s. My favorite segment is the one in Africa, especially the countries and people who had never seen surfing before. Oh, and the "In and Out" place. 7.5/10

sounds interesting, thanks
