Where are they now: Huge film songs.

I remember a time when OST songs from movies big and small were inescapable (or at least known) especially during summer blockbuster season.

My Heart Will Go On is so linked with Titanic that people now just call it... Titanic.

Did you know, that when it snows, Batmas' eyes become large and the light that Nicol Kidman shines can be seen? Yes! Because Seal told us over and over again!

Whitney Houston will always love Kevin Costner.

Godzilla made Puff Daddy ask us to come with him, while Jamiroquai was going deeper underground. (Godzilla had two of those songs, guys. Two!)

And that's just scratching the surface of popular songs from film. Some have even become classics.

So what happened? The last song linked to a movie for grown ups (well...) that was semi big I remember is Hero by Nickelback for Spiderman. And that was in the early 00's.

Where is The Avengers song? The Transformers song? Some empowering little ditty for The Help?

Do they not make them anymore? I've seen some pop up, but never to Titanic levels. Have film people largely abandoned this marketing strategy?

Is it the changing landscape of how people listen to music? Happy by Pharrell was very big, so it still _can_ happen. (I know I'm contradicting myself here, but I'd like to focus on songs that weren't from movies primarily aimed at kids)

Am I just out of the loop? But those songs should be so big you don't even have to be in the loop. Right?

And lastly, am I making any sense, or should I just LET IT GO!

Let's discuss this guys.

reply

No,in my opinion you make perfect sense

"And lastly, am I making any sense, or should I just LET IT GO!"

I see what you did there!

Speaking of Costner, Everything I do by Bryan Adams was number 1 for about 300 weeks (it felt like) in the UK in 1991.
The one from recent years that immediately sprang to mind was Skyfall by Adele but when I checked that was 6 years ago. Seems that you may be onto something.

reply

"Speaking of Costner" one of my all time favorite films Fandango includes a very poignant wedding scene featuring the music of Pat Metheny. If you go to Youtube(I'm a fossil and cannot figure out how to attach the piece)and type: Pat Metheny Film Scores: Fandango the scene appears.

reply

Everything I do is still played all the time.

I like that the Bond movies still have theme songs, even if I don't like them. It sure feels like less movies have them though, which is a shame IMO.

reply

Everything is awesome Mina.

LOL!

Another animated movie though.

You make sense. Many of us associate a certain song with a certain movie.
We always listened to the radio at work during the day. One of the games we would sometimes fall into was name that movie/tv show.
A song would come on and we would name the movie or show that song was from.
Let's see... Stand By Me is an easy one.
Listen to a number of songs by Simon and Garfunkle and you will automatically think of The Graduate.
Dueling Banjos? Deliverance!

reply

Great examples.
My dad loved the Duelling Banjos and on my first trip to London I visited the Virgin Megastore and bought it for him. Thankfully he never saw the film!

reply

Up Where We Belong from An Officer & A Gentleman. I'm sure it won't best song at the Oscars too. ⤵

❤️️
Oh, yes! There is just no way that you can hear that song and not think of the movie.

reply

👍

reply

Those are good examples, MissMargo. But what's the most recent movie you associate with a song that comes on the radio?

reply

❤️️
You'll have to forgive me Mina, but I'm an old fossil who mostly alternates between the Classic Rock stations or the moldy oldies of the 50s through the 70s.
I'm really not familiar with much of today's music. I'm afraid I wouldn't know any of the songs if they are played in any recent movies I actually have seen. If I did recognize a song, I wouldn't know the name of it.
As for recent movies, no songs jump out at me at this moment.
You may want to take my memory into consideration.... I could tell you what I was wearing 40 years ago on my first date with my husband. I even remember that my bra and panties matched.
Now? I just had to look down to see what pants and shoes I put on this morning. As for underwear? I'm proud to tell you I'm wearing some today.
I can't tax my brain right now, so I'll have to get back to you on the most recent movie. It could be 10 or 20 years old though.

reply

Huge for me is Come What May from Moulin Rouge. It made me realize that Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor can really sing.

reply

This reminds me of your other thread about certain songs we relate to certain movies.
Which was very fun!

All I can say is, if a Nickelback song is the last one you can remember then I consider this a win for all involved!

reply

It's impossible to defend Nickelback

reply

I knew it was a matter of time.

Aren't they your people?

reply

yes they are Canadian. They seemed to have gone away. Thankfully.

reply

No worries hownos.
I'm sure they won't let you down.
They'll be back for you.

reply

The lead singer was going through a divorce a few years ago and it was revealed his income was something like $13 million a year. How is this possible ??

reply

Once you make it it doesn't matter if you're good or not.

Well, we're big rock singers
We got golden fingers
And we're loved everywhere we go
We sing about beauty and we sing about truth
At ten-thousand dollars a show

reply

I remember one of the morning radio guys just going crazy when he learned about that $13 million figure. Then he took calls from Nickelback fans and proceeded to lambast them.

reply

lol.
I bet a lot of people would have loved to hear that show.
They may be the most hated band in the world.

reply

It's a win for Canada if they leave. It's a loss for everyone with ears. (I did kind off like that song though, but I was young and stupid lol)

reply

I know exactly what you mean.
I was young-er and stupid-er. Those were the days weren't they!

reply

Perhaps it has something to do with song rights being to expensive this days? Just a guess. I was just thinking about Tour of Duty. I know it's tv and a completely different ball of wax.

reply

I haven't seen Tour of Duty. Guardians of the Galaxy did great with "reviving" some classics from the 70's (it was a big budget movie though). What I see less of is original songs written for movies becoming huge smash hits. I don't know how rights work for that though.

reply

Back in 2011 a film was released titled Win Win which starred Paul Giamatti. Now there was a small indie film not aimed at kids which had a song written expressly for the film by The National.

That song, Think You Can Wait, definitely turned me into of fan of that group.

Here's the "official music video" of the song with shots from the film ...

Unfortunately, occurrences like this seem to be getting few and far between.

reply

That was a little gem of a film.

reply

Indeed it was.

reply

I wasn't familiar with either. Thank you for sharing this with us!

I agree, it is very unfortunate we see less and less of this particular marrying of film and music.

reply

I believe there was even a company that made all those music videos for movie theme songs.

reply

Was there? I didn't know that. If they went out of bussiness this may explain things...
