What did you watch this week Father? (10/06-16/06)

Happy father's day

Yes, oui, si, da, ja!!

Let's do this

Mama's boy (2007 TV): ‘’ A twenty-nine year-old slacker who lives with his mom realizes his sweet set-up is threatened when she hears wedding bells with her self-help guru beau.’’ Not very pleasant to watch to be honest, has a few redeeming points, not even worth mentioning. Still better than Cyrus (2010), no offense to the Duplass brothers. 4.5/10

Thor: Ragnarok (2017 Netflix): Filled with myriads of colors, studded with dozens of winks and jokes, this movie is to take very lightly and is a real treat to watch and will be a thrill to re-watch too I’m sure. Everyone involved had the firm conviction to have fun and not take themselves seriously while making this film and the result on the viewer's side of the screen is the same; I had fun and I did not take the movie seriously at all. Valkyrie was a very cool addition to the Avengers or should I say the Revengers. The action scenes and CGI were off the hook and the story was as deep as a street puddle. 7.5-8/10

Thor (2011 Netflix): When I saw I was on Netflix I decided to rewatch. It was not as good as the first time, it takes itself a bit too seriously but has its moments. 6.5-7/10

Les trois p’tits cochons (2007 TV): This french-canadian movie is gold from start to finish. Unfortunately, I recognised myself in some of the character’s actions and made me take a good look at the guy in the mirror. The directing and cinematography was flawless, the characters could not have been played by better actors and I did not only watched this movie, I felt it and was awkwardly comfortable and happy being immersed in it. A bit how an unfaithful man can feel while doing the act. 8.5/10

Magnum Force

Never grows old. The relationship he has with the cop character "Charlie McCoy"---his estranged wife---and their children. It's fascinating & a real draw to this film for me. He is suicidal. She is wanting to get laid, summarily by Harry. But, Harry is at their home on the pretense of dinner. This genuine good guy is trying to help his fellow "Charlie"---trying to intercede to save the marriage and the children's purity. He's been there before, I believe many times. The children are familiar with him and profess their love & respect for Harry. The wife, in low tones so the children cannot hear details how "Charlie" put his service revolver to his head the night before. "What could I do? I went next door, got the neighbors and we made him stop."

This is pure Eastwood. Laying a scenario into a separate movie and making it work on a level that is rarely achieved. Here, it is.

"Charlie" is of course murdered by the rogue cops. The next scene is at SF International Airport---on the tarmac. "Charlie's" coffin is being loaded by conveyor into the plane. Cast in black, the wife is now in mourning, though even here she persists:::the dress, though black is quite short. Harry is there to assist her as is "Charlie's" murderer (David Soul)---he helps attend to "Charlie's" children. "He's such a nice young man to help us, Harry."

Then the circumspect...

"I'm going to take him home, Harry. It's time he went home."

You got it, All. The Father's Day Direct Hit.

Thor, 7 and Thor: Ragnarok, 8. The third film is more fun, but the first actually represents the character better as far as the comics I remember. No interest in seeing Mama's Boy and never heard of Les trois p’tits cochons, maybe check it out.

Manhattan Baby (1982 Amazon Prime): "An archaeologist opens an Egyptian tomb and accidentally releases an evil spirit. His young daughter becomes possessed by the freed entity and, upon arrival back in New York, the gory murders begin." Stars: Christopher Connelly, Laura Lenzi. Not one of Fulci's better efforts 5/10.

Insidious: The Last Key (2018 NetflixDVD) "Parapsychologist Dr. Elise Rainier faces her most fearsome and personal haunting yet, as she is drawn back to her ghostly childhood home, where the terror began." Stars: Lin Shaye, Leigh Whannell, Angus Sampson. Another entertaining addition to the series, however the character of Elise and actress Lin Shaye are better as supporting character rather than a focus 6/10.

Deadly Target (1994 Amazon Prime): "Hong Kong police detective Charles Prince (Gary Daniels) arrives in Los Angeles to extradite a notorious Chinese gangster back to Hong Kong for trial. But soon, his suspect escapes. With the help of renegade cop Jim Jenson (Ken McLeod) and beautiful Pai Gow dealer Diana Tang (Susan Byun), Prince tracks the ruthless gangster down." Stars: Gary Daniels, Ken McLeod, Byron Mann. Not much to say its a passable film featuring Daniels, ok fight scenes a lot of bad acting and questionable writing. 5/10

Movies:

-Agatha Christie's Poirot: The ABC Murders (1992)
David Suchet is just fantastic as Poirot.

-Miracle Beach (1992)
An absolute crappy I Dream of Jeannie rip-off. I don't even understand how movies like this get made.

TV Shows:

-The Flying Doctors - "Million-acre Prison"

-Father Dowling - marathon

-The Love Boat - marathon
Dang, this is such a cheesy show! Highlights/low points: Charo and her stupid Love Boat song and Captain Stubing falling for a cross-dressing John Ritter.

-Unsolved Mysteries - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-Buffy The Vampire Slayer - "I Only Have Eyes for You" and "Go Fish"

-North and South - "Episode #1.3"
I have to be honest, l love the bromance, but I think George is kind of a jerk. He's a judgemental Mary Sue who acts all high and mighty and keeps falling for his sister Virgilia's tricks.

Suchet was sublime

Have a good week!

reply

You too! I gather you've never seen a Poirot movie?

reply

No but I read some Agatha Christie as a teen.

reply

Me too. I like the Poirot books.

I've enjoyed the first two Thor films, hoping to catch Ragnarok soon.

I'm intrigued by The three little pigs film but can't find it😞

So this week I watched Star Trek: The Motion Picture again! Just for the nostalgia, cannot believe it's nearly 40.
Then Coco, a beautifully done Disney film. It's rather moving in a non sickly way. I enjoyed it.

That's it for me!

Yes, yes I know "thanks for stopping by Dazed"!

reply

hehe

Coco I do want to watch someday soon. I think its on Netflix

have a good one DAzed!

Happy Father's day, SK!

Thor: Ragnarok was such fun! Thor on the other hand was forgettable.

Pitch Perfect 3 (2017)
What to do for the third instalment of your musical comedy? Turn it into a half-assed action thriller (question mark). I had some fun watching this one, but it was barely a movie to be honest. And Hollywood is still trying to make Ruby Rose into a thing!!!?

Downsizing (2017)
Mat Damon becomes small and finds himself, or something. Very interesting concept, but the film is tonaly uneven and the supposed satire isn't pushed to where it could've been pushed. A bit of a let down, even if I didn't have any expectations.

I started watching Bug (2006) last week as well, but I haven't finished it yet, so that's for next week's thread (if I still remember what it was about lol).

reply

I still hevent watched Pitch Perfect 2 but own it.

Downsizing, I like the trailer but the reviews are bad. Not sure what to do. Where did you watch it?

reply

Downsizing is far from being the worst movie ever. The trailer makes it look a bit more fun than it actually is though. I didn't watch it anywhere you'd be able to watch it, lets put it like that. You can look up if it's on Netflix in Canada, since I really don't think it's something you'd want to own.

BTW, what do you do with all the movies you buy that you don't like?

reply

Sell them back for 50 cents to 2 $ at the used DVD store. Unfortunately, sometimes they refuse them, so Im stuck with them. But I buy my movies for 3$ to 10$. So it'S not too bad

reply

Dr. Strange (needed to fill in some gaps)
The yellow birds
7 days in entebbe
Death wish
Survivalist
Turbo kid 👍👍

reply

How was 7 Days in Entebbe ??

reply

It was kind of boring to be honest. I honestly don’t think anyone would view that movie a second time. The acting blew chunks too.

reply

Dr Strange: 7/10
Turbo Kid: 9/10 YEs YEs!
