Good movies with weak central performances

Jack Nicholson in "The Shining." An average Jimmy Fallon performance on SNL back in the day had more depth and nuance.

Some of the Star Wars films should be here.

reply

Mark Hamill didn't give a good performance in a "Star Wars" movie until "The Last Jedi."

Speed is one of the greatest action flicks ever. And while Keanu is pretty cool in the role, he has some rather weak moments. Same goes for The Matrix.

reply

Keanu is likable enough in movies like "Speed" and "The Matrix" though its hard to overlook, at times, as appealing as he can be, his deficiencies as an actor.

reply

Speed and The Matrix at least were actiony enough that I was able to overlook those deficiencies.

The Devil's Advocate was the first flick the popped into my mind when I saw your question. I couldn't stop wondering while watching that how much better it would have been with a decent actor in the lead role.

There was so much subtlety a real actor could have brought that Keanu just didn't.

Treat Williams was a bit amateur in some scenes.

reply

He's also pretty laughable in "Once Upon a Time in America."

reply

Treat's hit and miss, he was good in Things to do in Denver and Deep Rising though.

reply

Treat's performance in TTDID seemed both out of character for him and over the top, but yeah, it got your attention and was entertaining.

reply

Agreed, he was probably the best character in it. It's a decent enough film 👍
