The Sixth Sense

It didn't even work once for me!

reply

I saw it just because the 3D effect. 3D movies were BIG HYPE back then, y'know... And at least to me at the time it was great. Once.

reply

I know lots of people who enjoyed it too, it just wasn't for me. 😊

reply

Amen! It sucked big time!

The Village

reply

Basically, anything by M. Night Failaman.

reply

"Unbreakable" is the exception.

"Airplane" and "Team America." Both are hysterical the first time but lose a great deal with subsequent viewings.

reply

I think Signs holds up on multiple viewings.

Jacob's Ladder

I didn't even finish once. I was so engrossed by the movie and kept on the edge of my seat. When
the aliens
started to be shown I was like wtf and turned off the dvd.

reply

That's probably true.
I'm one of the weird ones who liked The Village.

Always reminded me of an extended Twilight Zone episode.
How can that be bad?

reply

Well, as the fourth season of "TZ" demonstrated, when the show went from thirty minutes to sixty, these kinds of pulp stories don't necessarily work better when lengthened. If they had made another "TZ" anthology movie, but this time only with original stories, stuff like "Signs" and "The Village" would have worked beautifully ... provided that they were about thirty minutes each. In their current form they feel impossibly padded and their twist endings disappoint because you've had to wait so much longer to get to them.

reply

As far as Signs goes I thought there was enough humor and things to look for
to make it watchable more than once.
But not many times but more than once.

reply

Not just you, I really enjoyed The Village too.
The Happening on the other hand was bloody awful.

reply

Thanks sis! It's nice not to be alone.

I still don't know to this day what it was about The Happening.
It was total crap btw.

I don't know if it was the movie, the script or the horrible acting.
Maybe all of the above?

reply

I like The Village too!

I also like The Happening very much. First, I'm going to like any movie with Horace from Dr. Quinn in it. Second, it hits the sweet spot for me with the silliness. It's just the right type of bad for me to enjoy it.

reply

I also liked The Village. It was the only one of his films that I saw in the theater.

I was able to predict the twist just by having my sister read the plot summery on lMDb to me before the movie was even released. Not a good sign.

reply

[deleted]

I did not know that, thanks for the information. I just looked it up on Wikipedia and The Village has an extraordinarily similar plot.

The Village, of course. The Sixth Sense got me as well. No idea The Village ripped off a book.

It's a high wire act because, if "that one thing" is known to the viewer beforehand, a lot of the film's impact is lost.

I'm a fan of his work. What he puts on the screen is interesting enough that I don't find myself trying to guess the ending, so I'm getting the full impact of the big reveal or twist. (Except for one that was spoiled for me by a so-called "professional" critic.)

I actually like The Village. It's kind of an acquired taste, though, I admit. It was the first Shyamalan movie I ever saw, and I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. I was 15 when I first saw it and... well, it wasn't what I was expecting. It was an unusual one. But it kind of stuck with me in the back of my mind. About a decade later I watched it again. It's grown on me.

Shyamalan is certainly an unconventional filmmaker. Another movie of his that I didn't really like on first viewing but has always kind of remained in the back of my mind was "Lady in the Water", which was also quite a weird one. I'm gonna have to watch it again sometime. That seems to be the thing with Shyamalan movies. They marinate in my head for ten years after my first viewing, and then I like them. Lol.

I think the only Shyamalan movie I saw that I liked immediately on first viewing was "The Sixth Sense". But that was more straightforward and less... odd.

reply

I like more of his films than I don't.
I'm not saying he's making great films but I don't think he's as bad as his reputation has become.

I think Lady in the Water is another one that may become better with another viewing for you.
I've seen it a few times over the years and I like it for what it is.
It's a fantasy fairy tale movie. Is it perfect- no. It's still entertaining.
So stop letting it marinate and pop it in the oven!

I didn't like the Sixth Sense. When I was watching this I made a somewhat joke about this movie regarding
what was happening. I won't way what for spoiler reasons. As I watched it I realized I was right!
My friend has never forgiven me for ruining this movie for him.

reply

hmm to be honest I am not sure that worked the first time

[deleted]

Me too. Saw it once. Mind blown. Immediately wanted to rewatch it to see the details and to experience the movie with a new mindset. Real fun.

reply

Totally disagree. Great story and acting which makes it very easy to watch again.
