There haven't been any good movies for years.

Can anyone name any good movies during the past 5 years? I would like to know.

Inside Llewyn Davis
Tangerines
Birdman
Rust and Bone
Whiplash
The Hunt
Nebraska
Winter Sleep
Her
Philomena
The Past
The Handmaiden

reply

Birdman was the first to pop into my head. Great film

reply

Agreed.

Kind of makes me crazy when people say this.
If you limit yourself to superhero movies, remakes and reboots I'm not surprised.
There's a whole world out there still making great films.

reply

Agree. You've gotta seek them out

reply

None of these movies look good. Not one. Always some kind of depravity involved, gratuitous violence and nothing that captures your imagination with a good story. It kinda makes me crazy how the new generation thinks utter crap including "superhero" movies are any good. Why are they called "superhero" anyway? They are bizarre and vulgar comic book creations.

Ok Starting off with Birdman:
"A washed-up actor, who once played an iconic superhero, attempts to revive his career by writing and starring in his very own Broadway play. "
Are you serious?

"In 1971, a young and disorientated British soldier is accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the deadly streets of Belfast. "
Ok that might be alright but I'm already expecting a political bias here. Still not a movie that can make you sleep well at night. I mean why revisit the past horror when we have enough of it today. I'll pass.

Inside Llewyn Davis
"A week in the life of a young singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. "
Hmm maybe I'll give it a chance.

Tangerines
"War in Georgia, Apkhazeti region in 1990. An Estonian man Ivo has stayed behind to harvest his crops of tangerines. In a bloody conflict at his door, a wounded man is left behind, and Ivo is forced to take him in. "
Yeaup still can't get past this horror, war, depravity, violence thing can we?

I'm going to end it here. Don't have time for this BS. The last good movie I saw was North of the Sun. The one before that Motorcycle Diaries. The rest is all crrrraaap.

Rust and Bone
"Put in charge of his young son, Alain leaves Belgium for Antibes to live with his sister and her husband as a family. Alain's bond with Stephanie, a killer whale trainer, grows deeper after Stephanie suffers a horrible accident. "
Hmm ok but still sounds like a lot of misery.
Ok I'm out of space and cannot type anymore.

To each their own.

I agree there aren’t has many “good” movies being made today they are still making ones that I enjoy.
One of the reasons is they are making less movies now then in any other time.
I don’t watch many newer movies at all.
I’m still finding movies that I haven’t seen especially outside of the US that were made decades ago.

If they’re not making good movies then who cares. I don’t see how it could affect you in any way other
than to give you a chace to complain about something.
Newer doesn’t mean better.
Instead of complaining about it just don’t watch newer movies. Problem solved.

reply

Or even better, instead of complaining he can make a good movie himself!

reply

Exactly.

Apparently nobody here knows what a good movie is.
The OP is the only person who does.

reply

i haven't seen all the movies on your list, but, of the ones i have seen, i agree with almost all your choices. rust & bone, the past, tangerine, inside llewyn davis, the past, the handmaiden, whiplash - all exceptional.

reply

Plenty of good ones out there.

You mentioned Tangerine. I haven't seen that one.
The movie I saw was Tangerines from 2013.
The only reason I mention it is I only recently discovered that there was a Tangerine movie.
Hard to believe a citrus fruit became so popular in movie titles!

reply

Whiplash is in my all time Top 10..a psychological rush from the opening scene to the final shot!! Love it. Mile Teller was underrated in this one.

reply

I wasn't expecting much from this one but I was very pleasantly surprised.

reply

Any of th BEst Pictures between 2010 up to Moonlight. (Haven't seen Shape of Water yet.

try the most recent remake of Ben Hur, it was awesome.

reply

I haven's seen all of them but I agree they are some good films.
Including Shape of Water. That one really surprised me.

reply

Hi E
So nice to meet you!

Since you posted this query why dont you share your top 10 favorite movies so that we can best assist you:)

reply

Frozen (2013)

Best movie and the biggest cultural phenomenon in the last 5 years.

reply

Absolutely horrible. I much prefer the underrated Tangled.

reply

Yeaa.. But Tangled is from 2010 so not in the last 5 years as the OP wanted.

Also it was not a big cultural phenomenon. Frozen is way way bigger. It litterally swept all over the world, not just North America. Young and old, kids and adults, male and female, everyone is letting it goooooo...

reply

Disney spending loads of money to create a hype doesn't really say anything about the quality of a movie, though.

reply

Disney also spent helluva more money to promote their new Star Wars. Nothing happens in the other side of the world. Star Wars hype is artificial.

Frozen's is real. It's a complete. Global. Saturation.

reply

Star Wars is popular enough on my side of the world and it's been lasting for decades. The movies also made more money than Frozen. And they were sequels at that.

Ever considered that Frozen is targeted at a much bigger group than Star Wars? How many toys are bought for children as opposed to adults?

Fortunately, Frozen is a hype that will pass.

reply

Yeah maybe Frozen will pass, it's already waning a lot these days.

Still, I believe Frozen is one of the good movies in the last 5 years, as asked by the OP. I, myself, consider it one of the best, if not the best.

I fact, I would rather watch Frozen 10 more times than any of the new Disney's Star Wars.

reply

Hmm, I'm not so sure about that. All those movies are pretty crap. I think I prefer watching St. Elmo's Fire on VHS down in my basement!

reply

But that's not a movie from the last 5 years! Why do you keep bringing older movies?

reply

Chill out, my friend! Did I say they are examples of great movies in the last 5 years? I actually told the OP there were none.

I brought up Tangled to point out that Frozen doesn't deserve all the praise it gets, especially compared to its predecessor.

St. Elmo's Fire is an inside joke here on MC. It's a horrible movie, but I'd rather watch that one instead of Frozen or any new Star Wars movie.

reply

St. Elmo's Fire - lame-o movie (I was a teen 17 in 1985,
so I know) but...two excellent hit songs from the soundtrack.

"St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion) - John Parr - #1 for 2 weeks.

"Love Theme From, "St. Elmo's Fire" - David Foster (instrumental) : Reached #15 but it's excellent.

Dionne Warwick did a vocal version on the TV show "Solid Gold" ,
in the Autumn of 1985. I guess if you had to give it a title, it'd be "Time Rolls On".

It's here at YouTube :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eG5dx9DYRJc

Haven't seen it since it aired then, until today.

(If you can't click the link, then copy and paste into an
address bar r just Google Dionne Warwick Love Theme St Elmo's Fire 1985.)

The cartoon Frozen brought in 1.3 billion dollars and perhaps as much in licensing merchandise, waning? Disney will just move on to another block buster.

reply

Waning means the hype is becoming less. That may very well be true. Yes, Disney will move on, hopefully to a blockbuster of better quality.

reply

I know what "waning" means, it was the moon in the OJ trial,
better quality? Frozen was genius, just ask the stock holders.
Frozen is for Children, a cartoon that made 1.3 billion, Disney Studios is happy.

reply

Maybe they are, they spent a lot of money on it. Doesn't mean it's not a hype that will pass.

Frozen completely sucks by the way.

reply

I wouldn't know, I took my 6 year old daughter to see it, she watched it, loved it and laughed all the way through the movie while I slept, or tried to, she jumped in my lap when the giant snowman appeared, I did see that part, that was cool, lol
do you actually think they care about the hype? it's 1.3 billion they care about!!

reply

Of course Disney cares about creating a hype. It's what makes money.

reply

it made money, a lot

reply

Sure, but that wasn't my point.

reply

The point is this, when a movie, (and in this case a cartoon) makes over a billion dollars, the hype was definitely there, without it there is little success, that movie appealed to the children which is what Walt Disney studios has been doing for decades, I get your point, Disney cares about creating a hype. It's what makes money. I couldn't agree more.

reply

But I never said there was no hype. I'm saying that Disney put a lot of money in creating a hype. Lots of promotion, merchandis
and just pushing the movie on people all the time so that they'll spend money on it.

reply

I think you're putting the cart before the horse, you try giving a 6 year old little girl who has never seen the movie or never heard anything whatsoever about the movie an Olaf doll, she will just toss in her toy box and wonder, why? but ahhhh, once she has seen the movie she will want every doll and toy they make from Frozen, in other words, you have to see the movie before the merchandise will sell.

but on a lighter side, what makes me laugh is the adults on this post giving their opinion about the movie, its a cartoon guys, it's not for you,

reply

Does the 6-year old make the decision to go see the movie or buy the toys? The parents do and they see that shit everywhere, which makes it more difficult to say no.

I think you haven't been paying attention if you think these movies are not for adults.😑

reply

Does the 6-year old make the decision to go see the movie or buy the toys? absolutely!!
she's the one that dragged me to the movies and the toy store,it's easy to tell you don't have a 6 year old daughter,

these movies are for adults? lol, sure, I put it right up there with "Man on Fire"

reply

She did not make the decision, you did, but you simply gave in. Bad parenting.

But it does show that people responded to the hype Disney created around the movie!

reply

Bad parenting? that's a terrible thing to say to someone with a 6 year old daughter that I love more than anything in the world, it's obvious you don't have kids, you really don't know as much as you think you do, you're either too young or gay.
adios

reply

Don't be a hypocrite. I saw your post before you edited it. Good to know you're also a bigot. You must be a freakin moron or a freakin troll. Neither is something to be proud of...

reply

FUCK YOU, ASSHOLE

reply

So classy!😑

reply

I can't say I disagree with you. And the so-called serious movies that win awards are just pretentious and rely on a dumb gimmick or political/social trend.

reply

I can't say I disagree with you.

Me & you both, sister. Let's set up the Board, play us some Stratego.

Do you have plastic or wood?

reply

I have a cheapass travel edition.

reply

reply

I saw Paddington (I) the other night and loved it! Couldn't believe how invested I got in that little CGI bear, to the point where I was very tense during one scene! (If you saw the first one, you'll know which scene I mean.)

Too bad Netflix doesn't have 2 yet, so I'll have to wait.
