I saw "Adrift" tonight!

It's based on the true story about a couple adrift for 41 days in the Pacific after their boat is damaged in a hurricane. I enjoyed it, and give it a 7.5/10. Of course I'm a sucker for survival
stories, especially ones which take place at sea.

I LOVE these types of movies, like that Robert Redford film a few years back. Does this movie focus on the drama of survival at sea, or is there a lot of nonsense?

reply

You're referring to 2013's "All Is Lost". I enjoyed that one too.

This movie flashes forward and backward. When they flash back, they focus on the romance. So yeah, there is some nonsense. Your wife or girlfriend will enjoy the romantic parts. It's still a good film.

Speaking of which, did you ever see 2003's "Open Water"?

Yeah, I was worried not much of this actually takes place on the boat. They were promoting it on a morning show and it looked like more of a romance movie.

I've not seen it. It looked like another shark movie and I was all sharked out.

Yes, that's what one of the reviewers said. It couldn't quite make up its mind if it wanted to be about being adrift, or being a romance, so it kind of went down the middle. I enjoyed it though.

As to Open Water, it's unlike any shark movie I've ever seen. For one thing, there's no CGI, and no robot sharks.
When you see sharks swimming under the actors, it's really sharks swimming under the actors. It's one of the most
intense and gripping films I've ever seen, and it's based on a true story.

I'm a certified scuba diver, and it really freaked me out, because the same thing almost happened to me on a dive trip to the Bahamas in 1980.

Alrighty then. It's going in the watch queue.

was the cinema packed?

It was about half full.

Can't wait to watch this.

Excellent.

Glad you like it

reply

Thanks. Have you seen it?

😎

reply

Yes I have seen it. it was average at best

reply

Sorry you didn't like it. It would have been better if they concentrated on the ocean scenes.

If you're into survival stories you should check out the Australian movie, Black Water (2007) about 3 people who get trapped in a swamp and are hunted down by a crocodile. It's loosely based on a true story that happened in the Northern Territory.

reply

That was a good one!

reply

It sure was! They actually used a real sedated crocodile for certain scenes.

reply

Did not know that

reply

Thanks. I just may check that out.

I too am a sucker for survival stories, both land and sea, book and film. I was a little under the weather the last few days and at like 3 in the morning stumbled upon a mini series called "Mutiny."

"Anthony Middleton leads a team of eight volunteers to recreate the perilous voyage led by Captain William Bligh in 1789 following the famous mutiny on the H.M.S. Bounty."

I've been looking for the channel the last hour but can't find it. Its on Youtube, but has dutch Subs.

That sounds fascinating. I've always been amazed how Captain Bligh and his men survived the open sea in such a small boat. It's rated 7.8 on IMDB, but it didn't say what channel it was on.

Hope you're feeling better now.

It originally aired on Channel 4 - a British Public Service Station. I'm thinking it was on one of the Discovery Channels when I found it last night. For now, I'm watching it on Youtube.

Thanks. Feeling better now after getting some meds at the doctors today. I was the youngest person they've ever seen with such a severe case of gout lol.

Good to hear you're better.

Note: The movie is really good when it concentrates on the survival on the ocean scenes. Unfortunately, it keeps flashing back to the romantic scenes which occurred before on land. This sort of slowed the movie down.
