Baraka, and the others that are similar, like that Koyanisquatsi or however it's spelled.

Quest for Fire

an unique movie

reply

A one-of-a-kind, to be sure.

reply

Actually very good flick cat!!!

reply

It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I remember thinking "I've never seen anything like this before," DF! How long ago did you see it? Maybe it's time for a re-watch on my part.

reply

First viewing when I was a kid...not so impressed...boring cavemen😉
Second viewing...15-20 years ago...much better! It is still a ponderous watch...but I was able to enjoy it as I was more knowledgeable about early man. I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again...but I wouldn't avoid it either👍

reply

Love this movie

Valhalla Rising (09)
Weird ass movie...ive seen it 3 times and enjoy it but i have NO idea what the point of it was...

reply

i found that movie to be a terrible grind to get through, but i'm going to give it another go one of these days, i think. it occasionally pops up on crackle.

reply

Yeah try it again if you like
It has some amazing scenes although some real 'WTH?!?' parts too lol

Nicholas Winding Refn, The Director is pretty interesting...late 40's, Danish, takes some risks with his films
He made Neon Demon, Drive, Pusher 1, 2 and 3, Only God Forgives and Bronson ( those are only the ones ive seen )

I like the guy but he is odd...No surprise he made Valhalla Rising!

reply

Last days and elephant...both by van sant...neither is that good!

a ghost story

the one with Casey Affleck covered in a white sheet

reply

that's the one. loved it. my 2nd favourite film of last year, in fact (florida project was my #1).

it wasn't necessarily a film i would have immediately called great after having seen it, but it wormed its way into my head, so much so that i watched it on a stream the day after having seen it in a theatre, and it's never really left.

Mr. Hulot's Holiday

reply

there's not a ton of dialogue in playtime either, is there? it's been a little while since i've watched it, but as i recall, you hear a fair amount of background chatter, but there's little actually scripted talking, is there?

reply

I haven't seen Playtime only this one and Mon Oncle but it wouldn't surprise me.
I'm assuming all those movies must be pretty similar.

Not a whole lot of script at all. Mostly visual.
I didn't think I would like it but was very pleasantly surprised.

reply

i love playtime. an amazingly inventive movie. i've seen mr. hulot, but it's been many, many years.

if you have kanopy (free access with a library card) in your region, playtime is streaming there.

reply

I'll have to check it out.
Thanks for the tip.
