The GREATEST heavy metal band!!!

Not talking your favorite or the best...but the greatest. Criteria like longevity, over coming adversity, obviously song catalog...but also things like brand recognition, duration of popularity without selling out, fan appreciation.

Some great acts fail to achieve true greatness due to some of the above reasons. For example...pound for pound I think guns n roses has one of the most impressive catalogs to date...real firey shit! Great videos...BUT...Ive had tickets to see them over half a dozen times...and have physically seen them twice! Not because I couldn't make the shows...axl and slash couldn't...cunts! Metallica also very sound music...good live...sued thier fans??? Van Halen...inner band turmoil...Sammy...gone!

But a few acts seem to shine throughout the decades as survivers and thrivers.

Ac⚡Dc...around for ever! Overcame adversity with the loss of original singer..Bon Scott. Went on to achieve greater success with Johnson. Way beyond solid catalog...I would point out that the music does lack diversity and has largely been played to death, but that is far from the bands fault! A dependable sound is equal to a diverse one in my book and songs get played that people want to hear...played to death is kind of a compliment! But they neve forged a true persona other than the school boy Young thing...

KISS...What can be said about them that Gene Simmons has not already said? LOL! Great collection of tunes! Overcame much strife...turned "selling" out into "branching" out...only to "return to their roots"...with the make up they DEFINATELY had a brand...but kinda wrecked it in the 80s by losing their war paint and then later rocking the pink spandex look👎👎👎 also I'm fairly certain hey have retired more than once...which for me is a bugaboo! Still a solid act...but not my vote for greatest.

That honor would go to IRON MAIDEN! Not my favorite act...but their greatness checks almost every box...killer tunes...great fan recognition...awesome live...shit tons of records...overcame loss of original lead singer...and BRAND RECOGNITION for days! Eddie is the lynch pin in the bands successful persona...just masterfull! Every album had a musical theme that was then represented with a visual theme in Eddie!!! Just brilliant shit!
Worthy of the honor of...GREATEST HEAVY METAL BAND!!!

Let me know what y'all think!

reply

Evanescence,not heavy metal but close

reply

Let's take a moment to remember Bon Scott...

I'd add Queen and Quo to that list.

reply

Ya know...never really dug queen...but I can not take away their significance to the genre! The big debate when I was in school was if queen and van Halen heavy metal or just hard rock...seems the jury is in...and I was right...they WERE metal! Also I forgot to mention black sabbath/ozzy...yikes!

reply

My mistake, I wouldn't really call Queen metal either! Rock definitely but not metal.
Just ignore me, I'm a girl and we're all ugly,skanky whores anyway...apparently!

reply

Honestly though...they have been recognized lately as metal...and I can see it...just can't always hear it LOL!
And I would never ignore you!!!

reply

I feel bad Dazed...I neglected to ask about your hubby and cat...hope all is working to your benefit on those fronts!!! Soul mates and our pets...very serious stuff...for those of us that care😉👍

reply

Thanks for asking.
One is stoned out of his brain staring into the hedge and refusing to speak to me and the other is massively relieved to find that nothing sinister was found.
😃 much relief.

reply

Now that is good news!!! So glad to hear...or read...whatever😉 times to relax and allow the world to spin on its own!

reply

Cheers!
Not much relaxing though, just had to coax the expensive, shaven chested furry one out of the hedge as the vet said "keep him in tonight". She doesn't know him, he wants to be out murdering small rodents not sitting inside watching them from the window. 🐱

reply

Actually choked on a cheeto reading that...I love cats!

reply

Up The Irons!!!
Always...

reply

Was waiting around just for you buddy...knew this was right up your ally! Do you concur...true greatness?

reply

Only one GOAT act in Metal and its Maiden

Lots of other good to great ones...but only one Maiden

reply

They honestly need to do a movie...like an hour and a half animated Eddie music video...I'd pay to see it! Have yourself a chuckle...check out my Wednesday thread...I'm rapping😱...I love abuse!

reply

That would be cool
Try to check out Iron Maiden: Flight 666 if you like them
Its a doco about them on a world tour...Bruce flies the plane!!
Great movie

reply

Caught the tail end of that a few years ago...need to see the whole thing...love me some docs about bands of my past. Showtime was supposed to air one about GnR...but it never happened😠

reply

That GnR one would have been sweet
Appetite is one of the best party albums ever
I can only assume Axl screwed this up too lol!
Total rock star dumbass...

reply

Oh it was totally his dumb ass...if you ever find a goose laying golden eggs...hide it from axl!

reply

Gwar.

Truthfully though my favorite and I would consider them metal is Nine Inch Nails. Love them, second best concert I have ever seen.

reply

BUCKY!!! Been looking for you since last night...how are things? Never heard back from ya...hope all is well! If ya got time...check out my Wednesday thread...give you some idea of my video editing skills...ideas for later on😉 oh...and I'm rapping...should be good for a laugh!

reply

Oh yeah...NIN totally counts...Trent is badass!

reply

Metallica. They've been in business since the early 80's. A very loyal fanbase. A moderate fan myself but I've got to admit that hearing them live has been one of my best concert experiences ever.

reply

Loved em live! Seen them over a dozen times! Sued their fans...dead to me! The napster thing was an unfortunate situation for all sides...im sure they wish calmer heads would have prevailed. Still can't take away from the catalog...revolutionary shit right there!

reply

Iron Maiden, definitely. One thing I've always appreciated about them, besides their musical style, is how many of their songs tell stories and have historical connotations.

reply

YES! THAT!!! Brings me back to the whole branding thing...they owned their property like BOSSES! EVERYTHING was intermingled perfectly...you didn't buy an album...you purchased an experience! You didn't see a concert...you went to a SHOW! IRON MAIDEN didn't play heavy metal...they WERE heavy metal!!!

No love for Sabbath or Judas Priest or even Ozzy?
WTF is going on DF?

reply

Seriously! I deserve a full blown what the FUCK on that! JP it could be argued had less staying power...but sabbath? Although to my credit...losing ozzy did hurt...but dio brought some raw ass shit...so...yeah...fuck up on me...OWNED!

Spell wreck made this post challenging!!!
