What did you watch on this week Jelly bean?(05/06-05/12)

Good day to you my faithful follower. Together we shall make this world a better place.

My week:

Mother! (2017 DVD): ‘’ A couple's relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.’’ This movie is from my favorite director, it has an actor I love and an actress that I rarely enjoy. I liked Lawrence in American Hustle and Silver linings but I never thought I would enjoy a 2h movie that mostly consists of a camera following her in a house. Mother! is like a bad dream. Mother! is like a great nightmare. I watched it on Monday night and at the end I was like: ’’this was a crazy ride and I enjoyed it but WTF just happened!?’’ I figured a few symbols out but then I read the entire meaning of the film on the internet and it just made me love it more. Then, the day after, I watched it again! That almost never happens. If I had one critic; turn the lights off because it’s dark. Fun fact: there is no soundtrack whatsoever. My rating: 8.5-9/10

Mayhem (2017 DVD): ‘’ A virus spreads through an office complex causing white collar workers to act out their worst impulses.’’ This one never reaches its full potential, not even half of it, sadly. The actors are doing a good job but the script, the cinematography and the overall experience was too weak to be worth the time and money invested. 5/10

An American Experience: Tesla (2016 Netflix): ‘’ Meet Nikola Tesla, the genius engineer and tireless inventor whose technology revolutionized the electrical age of the 20th century. Although eclipsed in fame by Edison and Marconi, it was Tesla's vision that paved the way for today's wireless world. His fertile but undisciplined imagination was the source of his genius but also his downfall, as the image of Tesla as a mad scientist came to overshadow his reputation as a brilliant innovator.’’ 7/10

Planes: Fire and Rescue (2014 Netflix): “ When Dusty learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he joins a forest fire and rescue unit to be trained as a firefighter, or else his air strip will be shut down.” Some scenes are good but it mostly feels like a TV show for children. 5.5/10

i already chimed in with my thoughts on mother on the aranofsky thread, so i won't bother repeating them here i guess, but i liked it a lot too and found myself nodding along with a lot of what you've said here. i haven't revisited it yet, but i definitely will.

i watched mayhem a few months ago when it popped up on a few streaming services (i believe it's on hoopla and shudder at the moment, at least in my region). i thought it had lots of fun moments, but i agree that it definitely wasn't all it could have been. and i'm also very tired of every corporate person being portrayed as an amoral monster. the film has fun with the caricature, and of course it's fun to beat up on rich people, but that's a cliche that's worn itself out with me, at least.

my own week:

dr strange (2016) 3.5/5 my first re-watch since catching it in the theatre. i remember being a bit disappointed by the somewhat paint-by-numbers origin story at the time, and i guess i'd still say this hews just a bit too close to the iron man template, but visuals really do impress in this film, particularly in that trippy section when the dr first introduced to the astral plane or whatever that was. the 2nd half of the film doesn't quite live up to that promise, perhaps, but it nicely breaks out of that running/kicking/punching marvel formula in a way i really enjoyed.

dead of night (1974) 3.5/5 better than average, reasonably creepy not quite horror movie about a presumed-dead veteran who returns from vietnam in an 'altered' state. it pushes credibility just a bit with the family reactions - why on earth is his sister dragging him out on a double date when he's clearly not mentally functional is a question this movie doesn't answer - but it's a pretty snappy little low-budget item. surpassed my expectations certainly.

two days, one night (2014) 4/5 marion cotillard has a weekend to convince her co-workers to forgo a bonus payment in order to save her own job. this felt like a minor entry from the dardenne's, especially in its slightly repetitive middle-section, but it ends up feeling like more than the sum of its parts, helped by a note-perfect ending.

the lazarus effect (2015) 1/5 i wanted something simple. uncomplicated, trashy fun. and i've seen 'the lazarus effect' pop up on netflix every time i scroll through the horror section. i've noticed that it has abnormally low metacritic & rt scores - but it's blumhouse, and there's mark duplass (always great), donald glover, evan peters, & a fairly beautiful young woman. so it can't be that bad, right? don't let any of that fool you. this is a bland, generic, unimaginative film, a rote, grey, dreary elephant's left-testicle of a movie. there are loads of fun, terrific, trashy horror movies out there. watch all of those first, is what i'd say.

the raid 2 (2014) 4.5/5 i love it, but it is just a bit too long, isn't it? a little baggy in the middle? it's great, but i still think it's not quite as great as the first one. but the car chase is terrific, and the last 1/2 hour truly cooks.

reply

Dr Strange: Don't like the actor, the movie is alright. 6.5/10

The Raid 2: I'll admit that the first time I watched it I was confused in a few parts. The only reason I don't give it a 10/10 is because of that. Slightly convoluted masterpiece. 9.5/10

I have not seen any of yours, though I have Mayhem on the list already.

Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972 NetflixDVD): "In the 13th century there existed a legion of evil knights known as the Templars, who quested for eternal life by drinking human blood and committing sacrifices. Executed for their unholy deeds, the Templars bodies were left out for the crows to peck out their eyes. Now, in modern day Portugal, a group of people stumble on the Templars abandoned monastery, reviving their rotting corpses to terrorize the land." Stars: Lone Fleming, César Burner, María Elena Arpón, José Thelman 7/10

This description made me laugh. What made you rent this? I'm surprised NetflixDVD had it! It must have been very good since you gave it 7/10. Are you a big horror fan?

reply

Its a fun description. I have been in a phase of watching stuff from the 60s and 70s lately. I like older films, less polish and more fun. This apparently was part of what kick started horror in Spanish cinema at the time. Its part of a series of films, I got it on DVD because Prime only has the edited release. I am getting the second movie on disc as well because of the editing issue.

I don't think most people would rate it a 7 today. But I appreciate it for what it was and still enjoy it even today. I think I am blessed that I can usually take myself out of my time and enjoy a film like this when others would be put off by how it looks and sounds. I think the director did a fantastic job of creating his own thing in this particular genre.

Below is a better review than I am able to give of the movie and the disc I watched if you are curious:

I can appreciate that need to find something off the beaten path. I wonder if you've ever seen or heard of the Billy Jack movies? I heard someone talking about it on a movie podcast. I haven't seen them myself but my interest was piqued. They sound like they're sort of drive-in kind of movies but good like Easy Rider sort of good. Thank you for the link! I will check it out. I enjoy movie fan blogs and websites. If you have any others you like, please recommend them!

reply

The first Billy Jack was pretty good
The series slumped after part 1
They were drive-in stuff and i love that stuff but they were only 'so so'

reply

I'm totally impressed, I think they were difficult to find or at least that's what the podcast said. They just came out with a box set of four of the movies. They sounded very late 1960s, early 1970s. Thanks for the info.

Yep agree with Shogun, first film is worth a watch. The rest not so much. I haven’t seen it in 20 years though.

reply

I saw Tombs of the Blind Dead as part of a Euro Horror triple feature a few years ago at a really cool theater that served beer and food
What a fun, ridiculous and awesome movie this was
The director made several others in the series
Lots of fun and MAN those European fashions back in the day!

Movies:

-Best Seller (1987)
Just boring and not impressed with either Woods or Dennehy.

-RoboCop (1987)
Good 80s action flick, but a bit too over-the-top at times for my taste. I also tried to watch RoboCop 2 (1990), but I quickly had to give it up. Way, way, way too silly. Just a completely different tone, like a kid's movie or something.

TV Shows:

-The Librarians - "And the Hidden Sanctuary"

-The Flying Doctors - "Departures"
Bye bye, Sharon, most annoying character of the entire show!

-Man About the House - "The Generation Game"

-Family Matters - marathon

-Father Dowling - marathon
I knew this show was silly, but dang, is it silly!😆

-Unsolved Mysteries - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

-Buffy The Vampire Slayer - "The Dark Age" and "What's My Line (Part I)"

reply

Robocop is one of my favorite action movie ever. 9/10

I haven't seen any of yours, Stoney, but I may check out Tesla. Mother! sounds interesting but I'm not much of a horror fan, so I'm unsure about watching that one. I’m still making my way through the Midsomer Murders seasons.

However, I also watched the first season of Hart of Dixie (2011) on Netflix. It’s rated 7.8 on IMDb, and the premise of the series is promising: a new, young New York doctor is refused the cardiac fellowship she was expecting so she accepts an offer to work for a GP in small-town Bluebell, Alabama to improve her bedside manner. I’d describe the show as a small-town comedy soap opera. The medical aspect takes a seat at the very back of the bus, though. How can a cardiac surgeon who dresses like a high-price call girl be taken seriously as a doctor? And many of the women characters act like they’re still in high school. Actually, come to think of it, some of the men do, too. However, there are some interesting relationships that sometimes feel like a game of musical beds. There are a few surprises along the way, so as long as you remember it’s just light-hearted entertainment, it’s not too bad. Maybe I was expecting more due to the pretty solid rating. 6/10

Horror is way down on my list of favorite genre but when they are good (which is rare like pope shit), I love them.

Midnight Cowboy (1969) - A naive hustler travels from Texas to New York City to seek personal fortune but, in the process, finds himself a new friend. A great buddy movie and two Oscar nominated performances from Voight and Hoffman. Hoffman is particularly good as Ratso. A dark comedy in many ways. 7.5/10

Papillon (1973) - A man befriends a fellow criminal as the two of them begin serving their sentence on a dreadful prison island, which inspires the man to plot his escape. Another buddy movie in a sense with McQueen and Hoffman. Both were great with no nominations this time. A great prison movie. 8/10

The Conversation (1974) - A paranoid, secretive surveillance expert has a crisis of conscience when he suspects that a couple, on whom he is spying, will be murdered. This was great until the last 10 minutes or so. You ca either of two ways with the ending. After reading the threads the debate about this movie continues 40 years after the fact. Hackman was great in the lead role. Also see a young Harrison Ford and Cindy Williams. 6.5/10

Three Days of the Condor (1975) - A bookish CIA researcher finds all his co-workers dead, and must outwit those responsible until he figures out who he can really trust. I am not a big Redford fan but this is one of his better performances. A very good plot involving a cabal within the CIA. Max von Sydow is great in the assassin role. 7.5/10

The Day of the Jackal (1973) - A professional assassin codenamed "Jackal" plots to kill Charles de Gaulle, the President of France. First time seeing it in 40 years and it is still a wonderful political thriller. A sound plot and with solid characters throughout. An entertaining masterpiece. 8.5/10

hownos!!!

Yess!!

Midnight Cowboy: in my top 100 9.5/10

Papillon: that one is even better 10/10

reply

Midnight Cowboy's overrated - not crap - in large part because Buck/Rizzo don't evolve much as characters throughout the movie, so the ending is almost telegraphable.

DotJ was crappy, dullsville imo. Zinnemann doesn't give it much personality and Mr. Fox is amateurish, one-note as the assassin himself.

As for my filmviewing week, it was pretty average.

Mission to Mars (2000, Brian DePalma) 29/100
The Color of Money (1986, Martin Scorsese) 47
The Vanquished (1952, Michelangelo Antonioni) 44
Geostorm (2017, Dean Devlin) 47
Blowup (1966, Michelangelo Antonioni) (rewatch) 67
Mumford (1999, Lawrence Kasdan) 38
God of Gamblers (1989, Wong Jing) 55
Honkytonk Man (1982, Clint Eastwood) (rewatch) 68
Alphaville (1965, Jean-Luc Godard) 67
Dancer, Texas Pop. 81 (1998, Tim McCanlies) 36 - and to think for something so banal/uneventful it apparently has a good online reputation.
House of Flying Daggers (2004, Zhang Yimou) 60
The Client (1994, Joel Schumacher) (rewatch) 33
The Dark Tower (2017, Nikolaj Arcel) 46
"Fantasia 2000" (1999, various) 49

reply

The assassin was perfect in Jackal - a man of mystery without personality or motivations. A man willing to sleep with man or woman to achieve his goal. He was devoted to his craft.

reply

House of flyng daggers: in my top 20 10/10

The Client: Been a long time but it stuck with me all those years. 7/10

reply

Nice. I've seen all of those except The Conversation. Have you seen "The Eiger Sanction? I don't know why, but your list reminded me of that movie.

reply

I have seen it many years ago.

Papillon (1973) -

The guard leans Papillon against the wall after his stretch in Seclusion. Louis sees him, comes over, holds his face tenderly. "Pappy."
