A movie you LOVE...

That has a problem or two

I loved 'Enemy at the Gates'
The acting, the fight scenes, the cinematography...perfect and terrifying!
It covered the tide-turning WWII Battle of Stalingrad in which a determined and overpowered Soviet force fought off and completely decimated the German 6th Army

The attack on the city commenced in August '42 and ended in Feb '43 in complete disaster for Hitler and his forces
Nearly 2 million Casualties and thousands of tanks and aircraft were destroyed
Hell on Earth...and the Germans began a retreat that did not end until their unconditional surrender

In this epic film there is a whole romantic subplot that was so out of place it would have been side-splitting if it wasnt so distracting from the real story
Big flaw in my opinion

And dont get me started on Ron Perlman's crazy 'Russian' accent!

Do you have a favorite movie that has a crappy scene or two you want to mention?

reply

I've seen Enemy at the Gates many, many times. Have you seen the Russian made Stalingrad (2013)? Definently worth watching, along with the directors other movies.

reply

I have not seen it...unaware of it until now
Thank you for the title

This past week i found authentic combat film of Stalingrad and learned of a book titled 'Stalingrad: Death of an Army' referancing Germany's 6th Army
I have to find this book and your film...
D Day and Stalingrad ended Hitler
Very interesting stuff

History is amazing in that my country (USA) wound up at odds with these Russian heroes just shortly afterwards

Much obliged Padeen

reply

The wedding brawl scene in The Searchers was an unnecessary attempt at humor.

reply

Testify, howie, testify.

reply

It is tough to criticize one of my favorite movies.

reply

Understood. I respect you all the more for going there.

It's incumbent upon us all to follow this example.

reply

You are one of the most disrespectful persons here, so you offering Respect is like a Slob sponsoring a Cleanliness Award. Sorry.

reply

What's the matter, snep, don't it float?

reply

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, but it's no use discussing its flaws around here.😑

Beauty and the Beast has two moments I wish were different, the lame joke with the guy in a tutu and Belle's retort when arguing with the Beast. I also wish she didn't roll her eyes at the baker, that was just rude and hypocritical. Also, they could've been a little bit more clear on how long the curse had been lasting and how old the prince was when it happened. Now the fans will argue about this till the end of time!

reply

Sorry for the lack of Bollywood knowledge here dear lady but even I cant make heads nor tails of those films and I'm off my rocker😉

I will take your word for this Beauty and the Beast movie
I know you love it...you mention it every so often and i just dont have a clue
I may just start calling you Disney Princess...it seems a fitting and cute title for you;)

reply

In that case I should start my own line of merchandise!

reply

Im buying whatever youre selling lady;)

reply

I love star wars...but return of the Jedi had some let down elements...boba and jabba...under used! ewoks...over used! Chewbaccas Tarzan yodel😨

reply

I loved Jedi but yes...pretty stupid mistakes in an otherwise good film...
Excellent!

reply

Living in the shadow of the empire strikes back is also tough!

reply

Nearly impossible
Of course Jedi fell short

Also Scream:
Almost perfect, except for some very bad dubbing. And that bathroom scene with the two mean girls felt too much over-the-top and badly acted, especially the part where the one girl goes: "You're pathetic!"

Scream 2:
Jerry O'Connell singing.🤢
The awful wide shot when Hallie bites it.
The whole final act was suspenseful, but just all over the place. Total lack of contuinity and logic.

I Know What You Did Last Summer:
Jennifer Love Hewitt needs to stop screaming.
The crowd stopping Helen and not even looking up when Barry gets killed
Helen's chase scene is perfect, except for the part where she stands still and turns around. Just, no.

reply

Fine examples of good movies with a stupid scene or two

Well done Disney Princess and thank you😘

reply

May I call you LeFou, as an ode to my favourite Disney movie???

reply

I have no idea who LeFou is...
Sure go ahead
Whatever
Im quite liked by some and quite disliked by others
Go for it!

"Red Sky At Morning" - 1971 - I love this film with all of my heart.

For some reason it has not been released on VHS or DVD. Perhaps before I go "into the dust that is always the end." they will.

reply

Red River (1948) - At the climax of the movie, we know that one of these two men will have to die ( John Wayne vs Monty Clift): it's been coming the whole time, a storm brewing on the horizon. And then the only one and only bad scene in the whole movie suddenly rolls itself out: just at the point at which these two battered souls look to go up against one another, Tess (Joanne Dru), an unnecessarily female character introduced after the movie's halfway point, breaks the two men up, tells them off, to which they all end up laughing as the credits roll. And yet Tess hasn't earned the right to play such an important part. The scene stinks of studio compromise, weak when compared to the the dark and rightful ending inherent to the story on which Red River was based. What a shame.

Still give the movie a 7.5/10

reply

howie, testifying of a Friday evening. Go on, you big, beautiful howie, you.

I did not like that movie, and even without the ridiculous love story I would rate it only a 6.0.

A MUCH better film imho on this subject is the 1993 German film "Stalingrad". It tells the story much better. I would rate it a 7.5.

I haven't seen the 2013 Russian film Stalingrad.
