Childhood TV shows

What shows stick in your mind from your early childhood? I don't mean favorites necessarily, but just some you remember. Perhaps the earliest one you remember or some you watched when you were still fairly young, say under age 12.

"Bill Nye the Science Guy""

Good Lord, A. That man,,,I cringed whenever he'd ask a question of the children...."No! That's not it! C'mon, okay I'll show you. You're wrong." I might as well have asked my dad.

reply

I have yet to see another show that kept my attention and make my head want to spin from its rapid-pace zaniness at the same time. I have to agree, haha!

reply

Bill Nye could not touch Mr. Wizard.

reply

You're so right - the memories keep coming back. Some of yours are more my children's era, but I know about them. TMNT was a favorite of my two sons.

How about Beany and Cecil? One interesting note about this cartoon is that the 20-second intro is "customized" for each episode.

In this episode, Mrs Robot is mimicking a real-life comedienne's telephone bit, but I can't remember her name... It's going to drive me nuts until I know who it was. The bit starts at about 1:30.

reply

Beany and Cecil, like most cartoons from that era, I have only heard but plan on seeing someday. I try to watch programs from all eras. We're both in luck! I found this posted randomly in a YouTube comment section.

"I believe the actress who did that robot voice was Arlene Harris reprising her radio comedy character. She appeared as herself on a Dick Van Dyke Show episode about old time radio comedians."

"Yes, 'The Return of Edwin Carp'" {April 1, 1964} [season 3, episode 27]

The Dick Van Dyke piano itch skit is a hoot!

reply

Thank you! That's where I remember it from. Being a huge Dick Van Dyke Show fan, I almost can't believe I couldn't place her. 🙄

reply

Excellent recollection, A. That was a fine episode.

reply

Pepper Ann, that theme song! WHOS THAT GIRL WHATS HER NAME IS SHE COOL? IS SHE LAME? PEPPPER ANNN.

Wow, thanks so much for this list! So many good memories :)

reply

That song is stuck in my head now, and I like it!

I miss Saturday morning cartoons.

reply

Haha, that was me yesterday.
Same, I miss what Saturday morning cartoons meant more than the actual cartoons if that makes sense.

reply

reply

"Romper Room" Yeah, and wasn't her name Miss Plummer? And at the end she'd look in that mirror with no glass. "Romper stomper, stomper do, did all my friends have fun at play, did all my friends have fun today. I see Tommy, and Mary, and Michael, and Katie."

She never called my name. All those toys on those shelves. Gosh, I wanted those toys.

reply

"Fury"
[& the boy who loved him.] Remember, tex, Joey Newton was from the city, adopted child. Packy was his friend and old Pete was the ranch hand. Made livin' on a ranch seem so neat. It was always sunny on that ranch.

reply

Early Peter Graves TV role

reply

Wow, how did I forget The Lone Ranger? It was a Saturday staple in our house.

reply

And the color episodes had that real cheap looking color.

reply

Pretty much every 90's Nickelodeon Shows.

Other random shows:
Drey Carey Show
Fresh Prince of Bell Air
Home Improvement
Seaquest
Earth 2

reply

"Fresh Prince of Bell Air" & that 1 episode where he & Carlton are dancing together and they're serious and he has to catch Carlton. It's a GD riot, Padeem.

I liked "Home Improvement" but, the guy next door killed it for me. Did he have to be in every gd episode?

reply

It was actually The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, featuring that beloved Beatnik, Maynard G. Krebbs. “WORK?!”

reply

I grew up in Chicago (the city, not the burbs)

and the biggies where all on WGN:

am: Ray Rayner and his Friends

noon: Bozo

afternoon: Garfield Goose
WGN Channel 9 - Garfield Goose and Friends - "Mama Goose & Cornhusk Dolls" (1974)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ze2N7w6RWxo

reply

Garfield Goose! I grew up in the burbs of Chicago and I remember this show. One of the best childhood birthday presents I received was a Garfield Goose hand puppet. Up to that point, it was about the coolest toy I'd ever had. It came with the gold crown and best of all, it had a hard plastic bill/mouth so you could make that clacking noise just like Garfield made when he "talked." I'm sure I watched the early years because it was definitely not broadcast in color when I was watching.

reply

I had the very same hand puppet.
