Why did The Hobbit movies get such a lukewarm reception?

I thought some aspects of them were better than the LOTR films. The first one was especially good.

I thought that the plot was too bloated. It is a rather short book. The Hobbit was aimed at younger children than LOTR, but as an adult I found the trilogy too childish in places. I agree with croft that there were too many special effects and cgi characters. I enjoyed the 1977 animated film more. (that could be nostalgia though). There were some aspects that were good. I've seen the LOTR trilogy several times, but there is nothing that is compelling me to watch the Hobbit again.

Too cutesy for one. And others have pointed out, too fragmented for what they should have been. Take out the entire Necromancer sequence and make it two films. It might actually be savable by simple edits or at least a lot more worthwhile.

How do you mean too cutesy?

Especially in the first one, it was geared too much towards children. While The Hobbit is a much simpler book than LotRs it really shouldn't have been made to pander to children on such a level and, yes, Tolkien wrote some of what I'm criticizing but there is a question of interpretation. The party at Bilbo's house and the goblin king being two of the most painful offenders.

The party at Bilbo's was amazing, and who cares about the goblins the battle of Azanulbizar was incredible. Azog and his lead henchman that he kills are awesome.

You asked, I'm just giving you my opinion and I'm not alone on this. It turned me off from the series and my spending habits reflected this.

I liked them a lot and I agree that they are significantly underrated. I do think they would have worked better as two movies instead of three, but that’s a fairly minor point.

Cause of Bilbo baggins hates it and called him Frodo Baggins
