What did you watch this week you Marvelous Moviechatter? (03/04-03/10)

Bla bla bla. bla bla bla. Im drunk.

The Man from Nowhere (Ajeossi 2010 DVD): The fact that it was late affected my viewing of this praised film but I can still say that there are too many characters and too many subplots. I felt at lost at least 16 times. If not, the main characters were actually good but not even close to Leon The Professional. The action scenes were very credible and there is an epic 1 VS All fight scene near the end. I’m disappointed because I had high hopes but it was still good. 6.5-7/10

The Godfather (1972 DVD): ‘’ The aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.’’ Finally! I finally watched that a movie. T’was a good. I loved the first half and liked the second half a lot. 8.5-9/10

The Godfather: Part II (1974 DVD): I have to say that this one was a struggle for me to get through. The dialogues and the script are good but there’s just so much! Plus the plot was confusing. So I looked at my watch a few times lads. I think the highlight was De Niro. His timeline was the most interesting and the less confusing too. 7.5/10

Haven (2004 DVD): ‘’ Orlando Bloom stars as Shy, a small time expatriate fisherman whose life seems perfect, living in the beautiful Cayman Islands where he plies his trade - that is until his relationship with the beautiful Andrea starts a turf war. ‘’ The first half of this movie is actually pretty good. It’s like a cross between The OC and Traffic. Then it gets confusing and I slowly started losing interest in the story. 5.5/10

The Lion King (1994 DVD): Okay so this is my top childhood movie but now, my 3yrs old boy saw it at the kinder garden and now he wants to watch it every single night. Sometimes even twice in a row but I say no, once is enough. The day after I put Madagascar and 20 mins in he tells me ‘’no, I want the Lion king”. It played all week… So I thought I’d add it to the list. 10/10

Lots o f confusion for me this week. I may be turning dumber dumber.

I toured the world this week

Tokyo Twilight (Tôkyô boshoku) 1957. A typical Ozu film. He's been called the most Japanese of Japanese directors.
He tells stories of the lives and struggles of the middle class. This is no different. Story of what happens when
a mother who abandoned her family returns years late. Very touching, tragic and beautiful -8.5

Rocco and His Brothers (Rocco e i suoi fratelli) 1960- It took awhile for this film to get restored but It was
worth the wait. A mother moves to Milan with her 4 sons after her husband dies.
A moving story of family and relationships and how moving to a bigger city can make a huge difference on your lives.
I loved everything about this film except at times it got a little to melodramatic for me. 7.5

Jules and Jim (Jules et Jim) 1962- Another Truffaut classic with an incredible performance by Jeanne Moreau.
Basically a love story told over many years. A love story of two men and one troubled soul. - 8

Purple Noon (Plein soleil) 1960- The original Mr. Ripley story. A very dramatic stylish thriller.- 7.5

Cria Cuervos -1976- Three sisters have to live with their aunt after their parents died.
A poignant story of a young girl being forced to grow up under these circumstances.
The use of past memories and current events is used perfectly. It would actually be the way a child's mind
would work. I really like this movie. - 8.5

Osama -2003 A young girl is forced to pretend to be a boy in Afghanistan to support her family.
A small glimpse of what it was like to be a female after the Taliban took over at that time. -7.5

Incendicies -2010- An incredible beautifully crafted film.
Twins living in Canada start a journey to find out about their father after their mother dies.
It was their mothers last wish for them. So they set out to the middle east to their mothers homeland
to find out answers. There's really not much I didn't love about this film.
It also shows that some secrets are better left buried. -9

I think you're spot on with The Godfather ratings.
Probably with the Lion King too.

If you're dumber and dumber then I don't have a chance.
a Votre Sante

Cheers Dewey!

Impressive week you had there friend.

Incendies: Saw it for the firts time last year. Jaw-dropping, impactful and memorable film. 8.5/10

So do you mean to say that you agree that Godfather 2 deserve a rating lower than 8?

reply

Incendicies really blew me away.

I thought about that after I committed.
I liked the first one better but not necessarily a whole point better.
I think I would have said 8 for the second one.

reply

Incendies is incredible... Modern Greek tragedy from the old world to the new, across generations...

I was lucky enough to have seen it in cinema on a whim, it was a slow week and i decided to check out a movie with a couple of friends... "lets try that French Canadian movie with a middle eastern setting"... Oh Boy! I was not ready! 😁

Solid acting... Compelling story... Cinematic and atmospheric... and... a true punch to the gut 😉

It was the first Denis Villeneuve movie I'd seen... I knew then, that I'd want to see more of his work and watched all of his movies since in theatre...

reply

I would have loved to have seen it on a big screen.

lol- Nobody was ready for that!
I had to watch it back to back to make sure I saw it correctly.

I certainly hope Mr. Villeneuve doesn't go "hollywood" and makes more films like this one.

reply

I should watch this, being Canadian and all.

reply

Worth it

reply

Stonekeeper, I have to agree with you. I enjoy The Godfather Part I much more than Part II. There's too much going on, some of the events seem too ridiculous and the parallel plots don't really work for me. But we seem to be a minority.

reply

In deed.

reply

If you're drunk I'll start off with the ones it would be helpful for.

Flay - Sigh. Fourth Slenderman film I've watched. Fourth one to disappoint.

Muse - could have been so much better. They should have focused on the mythology and horror parts more plus Christopher Lloyd was wasted.

Reaper - Jake Busey, Vinnie Jones & Machete. Don't know what I was hoping for but this wasn't it.

In the Mouth of Madness - Bluray Rewatch. Not Carpenter's best but worth a watch.

One Dark Night - The woman in it looks like Jeremy Irons. Also has some of the juiciest looking corpses I've seen in a while. You could almost smell them.

Inferno - Bluray Rewatch - Like eating bloody sweets with your eyes. Second favourite Argento film.

Phenomena - Bluray Rewatch - Third fav. Argento.

reply

None of them for me.

I watched my favorite movie "Annihilation" (9.8/10) for the second time, and I loved it! Since I didn't have to concentrate so hard on the plot I was able to discern other more minor details. I also understood better.

I brought along a friend of mine because she said she wanted to see it. Her reaction to the movie was, and I quote: "Weird." (Sigh.) I asked her opinion the next day, and her response was "Weird." At least she's consistent.

😎

reply

HAhA! For realz?

I'll look it up.

reply

I think it's a sci-fi masterpiece, but a lot of folks don't. It seems that most either love it or hate it. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

😎

reply

When you say 'your favorite movie' ; do you mean of 2018 or of history of life?

reply

It's definitely my favorite movie of 2017 - 2018, and one of my favorites of all time. I would place it in my top ten.

😎

reply

Speaking of, keep an eye out for my next-coming thread homie.

Roger that, Bro!

The New World: Extended Cut - I've seen the theatrical cut many times. This was my first viewing of the extended.

Papillon - Again, seen it, but got an urge to rewatch it.

Nightwatch (1997) - "A law student, who takes a job as a night watchman at a morgue, begins to discover clues that implicate him as the suspect of a series of murders." I thought this one was pretty lousy despite the good cast.

Murder on the Orient Express (2017) - Pretty good. A little hard to follow sometimes, but enjoyed the cinematography and score.

The Man in the High Castle - Finally got around to starting this. Will be watching Ep. 3 tonight. Can tell I am going to enjoy it.

13 Hours - Great movie. What a disgrace those people were left to fend for themselves!

reply

Which Murder on the Orient Express did you see ??

reply

New one. Haven't seen the original or read the book.

reply

Please see the original. Vastly superior despite Finney being a rather silly Poirot.

reply

Finney at least looked and acted like Poirot

reply

Too silly for my taste, but Branagh was ridiculously unlike Poirot. What the hell was that moustache?!

reply

Suchet was the best Poirot. Just loved the guy.

reply

Love him too. And loved the tv series!

reply

Papillon: 10/10 MAsterpiece

reply

TV show episodes:
Luther
West Wing
Prime Suspect
No.1 Ladies Detective Agency

Movie:
Hyde Park on the Hudson. Bill Murray movie about FDR

reply

Never heard of it. Im probably ignorant but who is FDR?

reply

Franklin Delano Roosevelt

One of the very best of our Presidents...right up there with Lincoln, Washington and Teddy Roosevelt ( who was his relative )

He saw us past the Great Depression and survived to see the Nazi menace battered to rubble but died of a stroke just prior to the Allied victory over the Empire of Japan

One heck of a leader...possibly my favorite President

reply

you know your history Sir!

Thanks

reply

My dads an awesome reader of history books
THAT guys a pro

Thank YOU sir

reply

I gotta see Hyde Park
Did you like the portrayal?

Young and Innocent, AKA The Girl Was Young (1937)
Horror Express (1972)
Secret Agent (1936)
The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1936)
Charlie Chan's Secret (1936)
The Gorgon (1964)

I've been doing a lot of classic movie watching lately.

reply

Cool, I rarely watch these movies.

reply

Bla bla bla. I'm tired. And late. bla bla.

I saw The Godfathers a long time ago, and honestly I more remember reading the book than watching the movies. Classics, but idk, didn't leave a lasting impression.

Annihilation (2018)
A group of people (yes, women are people!) go into a strange anomaly to find out what it is, because all the other people who went into the strange anomaly didn't return... and they're "self-destructive" and stuff. Trippy things happen. Also, time jumps, and the creepiest bear creature that ever creeped. A bit like smashing together Arrival and Stalker (but less boring). The environment was strange and beautiful. The performances were good. I didn't understand probably half of it, so a good one for a re-watch. I enjoyed this one.

EDIT: I really must have been tired becasue I saw Annihilation this week! I guess my review for this week will feature what I saw _last_ week lol.

reply

Annihilation also reminded me of Invasion of the Body Snatchers

reply

I've only seen the Sutherland version. Is it that one that it reminded you off and how so?

reply

an alien life form replicating humans

reply

Oh, yeah, that. lol

The aliens are in so little of Annihilation that didn't even think of them as a thing in it really. If you go back, I guess they were though.

reply

The husband may have been a replicant.

reply

I think he was.

reply

Hi Mina!!!!

Bye Mina, see you soon!!
