Manic Street Preachers.

What do we all think of this popular early 90s Welsh indie rock band? And what songs by them, and albums for that matter, do we like the most?

reply

I like them. Two tracks come to mind —

A Design for Life

Your Love Alone Is Not Enough (ft. Nina Persson of The Cardigans)

I think they suck for the most part, but I do quite like "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next". A rather pretentious song, though.

reply

But pretentious in a good way, right? (And I believe you do like its message, right?)

reply

More in a "I like the sound, so I just ignore the rather silly lyrics" way. The line "I've walked La Ramblas but not with real intent" really makes my eyes roll.

So what's the message? "Fascism is bad"? Sure, but so is communism. I'm not sure they realize it, but even their silly, pretentious lyrics show how naive these folks were fighting a pointless battle.

reply

I like them but in a very specific couple of years of their career. The first time I heard "A design for life" it gave me goosebumps. I literally ran to the radio to find out who it was.

reply

Was never really a fan although I did like one remix of theirs, I think it was by UNKLE.

Great track Dewey.
Also La Tristesse Durera

I guess this will be one more occasion when the Man 18 just can't be fucking arsed to respond to anyone who replies to him.
Rude little fucker.

reply

Oh, I like that one. I've never heard it before.
That one will make the playlist.

Funny thing is I/we still respond to him.
Does this say more about him or us?

reply

It says he's a rude fucker.
Just like I said.
We are still the same people.

reply

You can always make me laugh no matter what.
I'm so glad you're back.

reply

You know I was never really gone.

reply

I know but I had a pity party.
I actually told Mina that you dumped me. lol

reply

You were never the problem, you know that.

reply

I know that but you're my security blanket.
I had to quit Dazed cold turkey.
That's never easy for anybody!

reply

I'm fairly sure there are at least two posters who would be happier without me!

reply

I'm positive there are at least several other posters who weren't happier without you!
The greater good and all that.

reply

I'm a sucker for the greater good storyline.
It pains me that you're not a Harry Potter fan so won't get that!
But you're a humanist so of course you get it.

reply

I have seen the movies.
It's kind of bitter sweet for me.
My kids loved them. At least the first couple.

Either way I do get it.
Just letting you know you are loved!
So don't do that again.

reply

They did? I'm so happy they got to experience that magical universe.
I started reading with my son and became entranced.

See,you'll always be my hero. You survived and didn't ask for pity ever.

Yet you still have patience, empathy and a very strong survival instinct.

reply

Same here. My youngest was the one who was really hooked.
We saw many movies together but I have a perfect memory
of the first time we went to see the first film.
It truly was magical.

We all do what we have to do.
You know this better than most do.

He puts so much work into the OP that he has nothing left for replies. Seriously, I'm expecting his OP's to start employing footnotes any day now.
