Movies you consider trash front to back

My other post is about movies you struggle to like, but are drawn back to due to some unknown force. For this one, what is a movie that (for you) has no redeeming qualities?

For me it's V For Vendetta, hate it hate it hate it

Signs

100% agree

And The Happening.

reply

Oh yeah, no doubt, The Happening was really hard to get through and I don't think I've seen a Shyamalan movie since

reply

I take it back, I just watched Split and liked it, strong performance by McAvoy and maybe redeemed Night

Definitely disagree, but if you do, why? Those 2 (V and Watchmen) are, to me, pretty unwatchable. You don't have any that are like that for you? I love Inception, but clearly others don't. I'm not a big fan of a catch-all responses like "every marvel movie" or "all superhero films." This was meant to be quite specific. Watchmen to me is the epitome of style over substance. I don't care about any of the characters, the acting is really bad, but man it sure is pretty, had great trailer. That's not enough for me in a movie. I will say that looking back Watchmen isn't as bad as Snyder's more recent movies, but I can't bring myself to watch it again. I'd rather watch Sin City a hundred times. Sin City is the epitome of style and substance. It's maybe the only time a literal translation of a book to screen ever worked. V isn't really worth defending. If you can sell me on it, I will surely give it another shot.

Guardians of the Galaxy... It's drivel...

Nearly all comicbook movies from the past 20 years... Mostly inane, with less than a handfull of exceptions..

reply

What are your exceptions? For me it's all about Batman Returns, Unbreakable, and Raimi's Spider-man. I'd be lying if I said I didn't really like The Dark Knight, but TDKR kind of ruined it for me. I didn't like guardians either and couldn't figure out why everyone I knew was fluffing it so hard

reply

Similar ones, although I'd probably rate Ang Lee's Hulk instead of Spiderman as I haven't seen Raimi's movie... The Dark Knight wasn't rubish (not the masterpeice people make it out to be either), but the other Nolan ones are as empty as any other comic book movies... It always surprises me that so many people consider Dark Knight his best movie...

Batman Vs. Superman had one or two moments, not even scenes, where it tried to go beyond trash, but it falls back on it...

I was also puzzled by the enthusiasm for galaxy guardians and I think it has a bad mix of marvel's superhero movies and Pixar CGI puppetry... It's a pre-adolescent regression fantasy for older viewers and a space cartoon for younger ones... The music, the cutesy pets/sidekicks and the whole fatherless boy eternal manchild central character as avatar for the audience...

Deadpool as well... Totally garbage movie... The idea of satirising comicbook movies just by making fun of the tropes common to the genre and some teenage language isn't really clever... Not to mention that it still panders to the comicbook audience instead of edifying or challenging them... I feel the same way about the Lego movie...

reply

Perhaps your expectations for the superhero genre are too high? They are based off comic books after all. Years of largely campy and silly storytelling with only occasional moments of quality material. I generally just watch them for fun and that's it. That is why whenever I hear someone call a superhero movie a masterpiece I chuckle.

reply

Anybody who loves certain superhero source material could never be faulted for expecting too much, the good stuff is right there waiting to be made, and the few times we've been really satisfied leave us wanting more of that

reply

Well I don't know his passion for the source material. I am merely talking about what he is writing in his post. As he says in the post below Superhero films are largely the fast food of movie making. They can certainly be enjoyable and/or good but you don't usually go in expecting fine dining and you are extremely unlikely to get a Michelin Star quality experience from there.

reply

I don't think it's all that bad to hold things to a higher standard, especially if you know it's possible it could be great. Don't expect so much just seems like a shoddy excuse for not making a good movie. I know superhero movies can be great, so when most are not it's rather dissapointing

reply

Yeah... it's the fast food of movies and while I do enjoy the occasional McFries or Snickers bar I don't pretend that it is masterfully made or edifying 😉

The Fred movies, watched them with daughter...huge mistake.
Little Nicky is crap and pretty much made it so I don't give Sandler the time of day in films that came after.

reply

What are you talking about?

V for Vendetta is the perfect movie for the dark times we are in

reply

Talking about I don't like it. It tries very hard to be about a lot of very serious issues but it comes across as silly. I do have a revolutionary spirit, I am just not in love with that movie

reply

The Secret Window. Damn, you really get fooled into thinking it's going to be about something...but nah.
