Anyone else at a loss as to why "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" is so celebrated?

Everyone has a classic they don't connect with and this is mine. The movie undeniably has strengths -- Ennio Morricone being foremost among them. But no matter how many times I watch it there's always a certain point where I get bored. For all the manifest innovation in areas like cinematography and music the horrible dubbing, paper-thin story and over-the-top machismo render this, in my book, a mixed-bag at best.

I haven't seen it, but I'd venture Clint Eastwood is the reason. I haven't seen half of his films but many of those I have seen are some of my favorites.

reply

I agree with the mixed bag assessment. I think the theme music and Eastwood's iconic character are its best features.

It's how I feel about other Leone works like "Once Upon A Time in the West" and "Once Upon a time in America": sporadically entertaining though blessed with a handful of truly iconic moments.

No
I really enjoyed it along with the other Leone and assorted 'spaghetti' Westerns of the time

The music, the story, performances, the violence...really enjoyed TGTBATU

I like your point about the classics though...I didnt 'love' Citizen Kane and couldnt get all the way through Lawrence of Arabia so...to each their own amigo

reply

I want to connect with TGTBATU. Maybe one of these days I will. I do like those classics you don't -- "Citizen Kane" and "Lawrence of Arabia" being among my all-time favs. But I concede they're not for everyone.

And I've never understood why Eastwood's best is generally considered TGTBATU. For my money he never topped "Dirty Harry" (and those "Harry" sequels sucked since like the "Rocky" follow-ups they completely undermine what the original intended).

No I do not. It's a classic!

This movie is what introduced me to Westerns. I think it's great, but I think it would have benefitted from a leaner final cut.

It's just hype. Those movies, the spaghetti westerns are pretty bad, they were the first to just have plain evil shoot-em-up psychopaths.
