Hey you, yes you, what did you watch on this turbulent week? (11/02-17/02)

More Winter Olympics for me. Snowboard (have you seen the half pipe japanese accident? ouch!), ski, hockey, skating and curling. Love it all. GO CANADA!!!

Brigsby Bear (2017 DVD): ‘’ Brigsby Bear Adventures is a children's TV show produced for an audience of one: James. When the show abruptly ends, James's life changes forever, and he sets out to finish the story himself.’’ I thought this would be a quirky comedy but 15 minutes in you realise that it plays more like a drama and it plays quite well. There is some quirkiness but it’s very light and I did not find any hilarity, just a peculiar adventure that unfolds slowly but surely. The pay off in the end is worth it. The scene where he visit his ‘’first father’’ in jail to ask him a question was very good. 6.5/10

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017 Bluray): The first one had the heart, the brain and the brawn. This one had the brawn and only the brawn. But what brawn it was. Had I ever seen such a brawn? Who knows! What does brawn really means at this point? John Wick is a fucking badass, he walks in a room filled with weapons, exit room and kill bunch of people. Repeat. Plus, he doesn’t have a wife anymore!!! OMG! But he got a new dog so that’s cool. No depth was added, no character development really, just flashy, silly and catchy action. It was fun but it does not make for a great film. It does NOT, I say! 6.5-7/10 (Mina: rate it too)

The CLoverfield PAradox (2018 Netflix): Let’s break it down. Acting: from acceptable to mediocre. Cinematography/special FX: From awesome to children TV show quality. Story: From interesting to completely stupid. Dialogues: From cliché to boring. Overall, I have to say that I still had a good time watching this because it made me laugh as it tried to be serious and it held a few good ideas. I liked the look of it all but it also tried too much to be like previous space movies that had their success. The ending was…. indescribable. 5.5/10

Altered Carbon: When I saw the trailer for this I had a semi-broner (brain-boner), it looked like a futuristic episode of black mirror that could be directed by Terry Gilliam. I watched the first two episodes (with much difficulty) and rather found a mix between Hercules: The legendary journeys and The Matrix 2. I want to give this show a chance but it’s hard to find its qualities. I’ll get back to you on this.

My man!!!

*high fives and our personal, super coolbro hand shake as usual

I loved Wick 2 but im a sucker for punchy/shooty movies
And yes, Cloverfield was absurd but i had fun with it...

I watched:

Ice Cream Truck: an unlikeable woman has a go with the local HS boy while a maniac ice cream man kills off half the neighborhood
Acting, story, dialogue, pretty much all of it was garbage...

The Other Hell : Italian 'nunsploitation' trash...the dubbing was the only highlight of this dreary pile of junk
Ive seen a lot of these naughty nun movies (i probably should not admit that in polite company but here we are anyway) and the fact that this one lacked any sort of sexy scenes really made it worthless
And yes, im not proud of any of that...

Three on a Meathook: a 70's drive in oddity...the killer's identity was telegraphed pretty early but whatever...come for the butchery, stay for the dopiest soundtrack ever!

Star Trek...whatever: the new one...i couldnt get into it but i was sort of in and out of the room
Cost me 5 bucks to rent so i should give it another go
Seemed decent enough

That is all amigo

Spartacus (1960, US)
Classic movie about the biggest slave uprising in history (until the successful Haitian one), in which Spartacus led a breakout of gladiators from Roman Capua who proceeded to form an army of thousands of slaves from across Italy and inflict a series of defeats on the Romans, becoming an icon of resistance and revolution up to the present day. I love this movie, although I admit the script could have been a lot better. The standout performances were Peter Ustinov as Batiatus, owner of the gladiatorial school in Capua, and Lawrence Olivier as Crassus, the villain of the piece who led the suppression of Spartacus's army. There are some issues with historical accuracy, but the movie isn't just about Spartacus but also about McCarthyism, as this movie was the one that broke the Hollywood blacklist of the 1950s. Crassus seems to be a stand-in for Joseph McCarthy. Some of the historical inaccuracies (e.g. Crassus assuming a Sulla-type dictatorship, which historically he never did) make more sense in that light. All in all it's an excellent movie, although a bit hampered by stilted dialogue and a slight excess of melodrama.

Foreign Correspondent (1940, US)
An American reporter is sent to Europe under the pen name of Huntley Haverstock to cover the outbreak of war shortly before it begins. He's assigned to cover a peace movement in the Netherlands, and stumbles into a conspiracy by a Nazi spy ring to kidnap a Dutch politician named Van Meer and acquire military secrets. Haverstock teams up with the daughter of the peace party leader and a British journalist to rescue Van Meer and root out the leader of the conspiracy. A pretty decent espionage thriller, and I had no idea until it was over that it was made by Alfred Hitchcock, so I forgot to keep an eye out for his cameo in the movie, which I'm usually pretty good at catching.

"Annihilation". This is a Sci-Fi Masterpiece! It's rated 8.2 on IMDB, but I give it a 9.8, the best film I've seen in years.

An interesting and eclectic list, stone. I liked Cloverfield Paradox a bit more than you did. I'd give it a 6.9.
