Helicopters in films...

Why do Hollywood scriptwriters always have these very manoueverable craft flying close up to their targets- and not hovering at a safe distance to fire missiles, etc?

And if chasing a person/monster etc, why always repeatedly fly PAST the target and back again (ie. X-Files, From Russia With Love), and not...hover?

reply

Because it's more dramatic that way.

Like running away from a pursuing car...in a straight line.

It's a "Macguffin".

Manoueverable?

Btw, did you hear about the one which crashed in the Grand Canyon, killing four people? I took that same chopper tour back in 2014.

The death of Vic Morrow

reply

Two young children also died in that stunt.

Yeah..that's why I posted the whole page...lots of info...I should have mentioned the children as I'm fairly certain one of their demises is caught somewhat candidly in some of the videos. HBO produced a documentary about helicopter safety and tragedy in Hollywood...morrow was a huge part if it...it got canned however...I'll try to find out the particulars and post them...

I always think of that when I watch him in Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry. (Peter Fonda is hot!) He was afraid of helicopters even then.
Such a senseless tragedy on the set of that Twilight Zone movie.

reply

You mean such as with the first Rambo movie where the redneck deputy orders the non-State Police trained pilot down into the gorge? You mean where the Jeremy Irons character from the third Die Hard movie overlooks power line wires?

reply

Big movies almost always have(not Star Wars, of course) helicopters, for the amazing sound. Nothing has that thump thump thump thump like a helicopter. It makes the theater/your house come alive.
