Great Actors Who Didn't Make Crappy Movies

Even the greatest actor, Marlon Brando, made some bad movies, but there are some great actors who cared about the quality of the movie, instead of just the money.

John Cazale
-The Godfather
-The Conversation
-The Godfather II
-Dog Day Afternoon
-The Deer Hunter

reply

John Cazale was a fringe character actor who got lucky with roles in five good movies and then he died young.

reply

I doubt you'll find many. Most all actors have a crappy movie hidden in their past somewhere.

reply

This man was a huge loss
He was also a rabbits foot for movies
I believe 4 of his 5 or so films were Oscar nominated
Died way too young

reply

Paul Newman is my huckleberry!

Hud
The Color of Money
Butch Cassidy...
Cool Hand Luke
Slap Shot
Nobody's Fool

He made a variety of winners over many decades (and was supposedly a top gent in real life)
Older ladies i know still swoon at the mention of his name
Newman was legendary

reply

The Sting
The Hustler
Hombre
The Verdict
The Young Philadelphians

Newman was one of a kind.

reply

Damn
Not sure how i forgot Hombre!
Good call

reply

"Hombre" is probably my favorite movie with Newman...and "Cool Hand Luke"

However, I thought "Quintet" and "The MacIntosh Man" were real bad, but he still worked with great directors (Robert Altman, John Huston), though both directors said it was their worst movie, and I believe they were released within a year of each other.

reply

Torn Curtain didn't work for me - you would think Newman and Hitchcock would be a sure thing. It wasn't

reply

I didn't even know about that, but I'll take your word for it.. I was never a big fan, either, but I did like "Dial M For Murder" and a couple others... Always liked Ray Milland - he reminds me of Senator Eugene McCarthy :)

reply

You are right - there is a strong resemblance.

reply

I am one of the many older women. I may not swoon at the mention of his name, but I do think he was one of the most handsome men I have ever had the pleasure of feasting my eyes on.
With that said, he really was a fine actor and he certainly appeared in a great many outstanding films.
He did have one big stinker in his past. It was his first movie. The Silver Chalice. It is pretty bad. Even Mr. Newman was ashamed of it.

reply

Well now ive gotta hunt down that stinker!

reply

You've never heard of it? Paul Newman actually took out and ad apologizing for his awful performance.

reply

Dont believe so...
And lol... Thats pretty funny
Now im determined to find it !

reply

Well, all that you have to do is to type in the name of the movie here on the individual board right here on this site. You can read the different threads. There is even a thread where they are talking about the apology.
It isn't that hard to find.
I heard about it years ago on an episode of Biography.
He also discussed it when he was the featured guest on Actor's Studio.

reply

I just made a post to you on The Silver Chalice board. The movie is in the Trending Bar now.

reply

I know I keep bothering you, but I thought I'd copy and paste this little excerpt from a thread on the board.....

They just confirmed on TCM when they showed this that the story is true. They said Newman took out an ad in the Hollywood Reporter in the 60's when the film was shown every night for a week on TV. The ad read: "Paul Newman apologizes on TV every night this week."

reply

Youre not bothering me at all Miss

I meant i want to see this infamous porce of junk now
Bad movies are a guilty pleasure for me... I often enjoy the losers as much as the classic greats!
Hmm...The Godfather or Showgirls tonight..?
This is an almost daily convo with myself lol

reply

“What we have here is a failure to communicate..”

reply

Well thats just par for the course on MC isnt it?

reply

Lol

reply

And Mutany on the Bounty.

reply

I was going to mention this, but it wasn't a bad movie... Not great, and it could have been well had there not been 20 scripts and monsoon weather.

reply

I liked the movie. I didn’t know all history behind it’s making. Now I wonder how much better it could have been.

reply

Just to be clear, I was referring to the 1962 remake.

reply

Marlon who?

Vincent Price for me, his movies even the lesser ones are all very watchable usually thanks to him.
