shareNot sure it would be enough to cause a total extinction, but something like a supervolcano eruption (like the already overdue Yellowstone) could cause us some serious damage and set us back quite a ways.
shareEruption by Harry Turtledove was a good book that depicts what would happen if Yellowstone erupted. It wouldn't end the world, but would effect global temperatures, crops, etc. Its a 3 book series.
shareAsteroid annihilation absolutely
shareIn every cataclysmic destruction, there would still be human survivors holding on to dear life. Maybe only a few hundred, or a few dozen. Even if the entire earth were to explode, humans that had been abducted centuries, decades, and years earlier would still be alive on other worlds, or any humans that partook in secret faster than light travel to distant stars, would still be alive.
It would take a collapse of the universe, literally a collapse of the box we are in, for us all to become extinct.
My SO has already picked out an old mine we will hunker down in.
shareImdb deletes its boards, unleashing its user base upon the world. They riot and destroy everything in protest.
shareI don't think it will be an event. I think it will be an invention. And it's here already.
An invention that keeps people from doing and learning. One that distracts a staggering number of people on a regular basis. Something some people are tempted to use unsafely while they should be concentrating. It has people fooled into thinking they're getting more done when they hold it in their hands. People relying on a device for memory and ideas.
Breeding zombies.
My SO is deadly afraid of AI, as is Stephen Hawking.
