We're off to Xmas dinner

Off to my brother's for a nice feast - got to get going as we had a lot of snow last night. The Cherokee is warmed up.

reply

Enjoy your feast and safe travels.

reply

I hope you have winter tires.Have a great feast.

reply

Have a blast buddy
Im off to my sisters place down in the city pretty soon
Lets exchange tales of our gluttony later🍻

reply

Made it home safe and sound. Four families with 17 people in total it gets a bit loud at times but a fun day all around. Now I can get to some binge watching tomorrow as a big freeze is coming and I am in hibernation mode.

reply

Glad you had a fun time
I nearly overdid it...too much food!
No booze though because i drove
My wife and sister both got looped so that was really funny lol
Peace on Earth good buddy

reply

Glad you had a fun X-Mas with your brother and his family. Seventeen people at the feast? Wow! It sounds like you all had a great time all around.

As for myself, I went to Brookline, MA, not far from where I reside, to my family's house, where my mom, my sister-in-law, and I had a scrumptious Japanese meal that was delivered to us by the proprietors of a great Japanese restaurant in our area! Yum, yum, yum.

My brother, his 17 year old son, and his 15 year old daughter, all went skiing up at Sugarbush, in Vermont.

There's a big freeze coming to our general area tomorrow as well. I guess I may stay in and use my exercycle for exercise.

reply

Cars don't really need to be warmed up. It's not better for the car. The engine is better off with a little torque. The best thing for the car is to drive slow for the first mile. People who expect the interior of the car to be much, much warmer than the outside temperature are not dressed warm enough. It's important to dress warm. Dress in layers. Especially if you have a great warranty and roadside assistance and you get a flat tire and want to wait in the warm car for 40 minutes before braving the cold for five minutes to watch the mechanic put your spare on. Or if your wife runs out of gas. And when it comes to infants, bundle them up. They don't need the car running while you run into the convenience store because you forgot to buy enough diapers at the supermarket last time they were in stock. Infants can usually handle the cold better than their parents.

Merry Christmas.

Thank you Click and Clack! Merry Christmas!

:-)

reply

I don't think you ever walk for an entire night on frozen snow and freezing temps. do you?

reply

I don't go out of my way to walk all night on frozen snow in freezing temperatures. But whether I do or don't, I stand by my point: it's wise to dress for the weather and that letting a car idle before usage is an unnecessary waste of a non-renewable resource and also unnecessarily releases particulate matter that is not beneficial to a life-sustaining environment.

Happy Boxing Day.

reply

"I don't think you ever walk for an entire night on frozen snow and freezing temps. do you?"

Most people don't do that if they don't have to. I do worry about the people who have no home and no place to sleep, much less walk! There are many in just such a situation.

reply

I remember when we were small kids my sister and i go around the city to sing christmas carols with our father and we visisted our grandparents in the village they lived. Our feet were frozen.

reply

Sounds like special memories in spite of the cold.

reply

It was cold, but yes. They are special memories.

reply

I hate getting in a cold car.

reply

Boo hoo. You probably also don't like it when your hands and feet get cold.

Maybe you also hate it when your nose runs and the stuff coming out freezes before you can slurp it up.

Don't be jumping out of bed, into a coat, running around like an under dressed sprite from A Midsummer Nights Dream. Get out in that Winter Wonderland like Mad Max with the windows open.

Bundle. Up.

In Layers. You'll thank me for it.

reply

tonight it will be -22 celsius which is about -8 fahrenheit - I have survived a few cold winters in my 54 years.

reply

I take it you know aboot scarves, mittens, etc.?

reply

I also know about natural gas furnace which keeps things nice and comfy inside.

reply

That's not going to help you when you're in your car.

Or outside checking the mail. Or trying to rescue a bird.

Or if your furnace has an electric ignitor and a storm causes a loss of power and you have no alternate way of lighting it.

Dressing for the weather is another cozy idea.

#thermals

reply

the heater in my Cherokee works just fine.

reply

Not if your heater core goes bad. Or your blower motor fails. Or if you hit a moose or an elk or a deer and you're leaking radiator fluid.

Dress for the cold, eh?

If you had to wait for a tow truck, it's better to be warm, in layers, so you won't feel like starting a campfire without a permit.

What if you got lost in the woods?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2igOA9tm6dI

Paulie and Christopher weren't prepared. They ended up acting like silly babies.

You may jump out of your slippers, into a coat and out the door to check the mail but that's not the same as being ready to drive in a winter wonderland.

#preparedness

reply

Your such a negative person🤔

reply

Not with you, Alice. You just get out there and have fun.

I live in the third largest city in North America - the place is crawling with tow trucks. I keep a warm jacket/gloves/emergency kit in the back as does my wife. We don't have any infants to worry about. Warming up the car when its -20 is good for the transmission.

reply

I hope you're using synthetic transmission fluid.

And those clothes in the back simply aren't keeping you warm until you put them on. It's good to have a warm outfit for emergencies, but there's a lot to be said for having a second warm outfit that goes on you before you go outside.

Warming up the car for too long is actually not good for the transmission. What year is your Jeep? If it's between 1989 and 2017, there are some things you should know aboot the transmission.

#TSB

reply

It'a 2015 Grand Cherokee. It has snow tires and I stick to the regular maintenance schedule. My wife has a 2012 Ford Edge with snow tires and she also sticks to the maintenance. Both vehicles are great in the winter.

reply

I may spring for the Edge next time...its a really nice trucky-car...a couple of my friends have them
I went with the Escape this time around but the lease is almost up!

reply

She had an Escape before the Edge - both are great vehicles imo.

reply

Yup
Im a Ford

reply

Make sure you check the transmission fluid level when it is *not* extremely cold or hot.
Also, if you haven't already, reprogram the TCM (transmission control module). It will give you smoother shifts and avoid other Pwoblems.

One more thing Re-Guarding the Jeep... the bypass o-ring for the water pump has been known to get pinched and cause a leak.

If your wife turns the wheel all the way to the left or right, and hears a high pitched squealing noise, the PSP (power steering pump) is on its way out. Slam a new one in or just switch cars. And while we're on the subject, let's not forget the importance of moisturising in dry weather.

reply

We went ice skating today indoors as it is freezing. Then we got caught in another snowstorm on the way home - the Cherokee worked like a charm.

reply

As well it should. Those Technical Service Bulletins get added as time goes on, so it's something you can check on periodically.

Did you know a snowstorm was coming? Did you check the weather? Did you decide to drive for recreation anyway?

#SafeHabits

reply

They called for flurries but we got way more - it's called lake effect snow

reply

I hope the proprietors of the skating rink closed it as soon as the storm started, putting their customers first.

They know ice, so their "goal" should always be that all those skaters to make it home okay.

😬 It's flippin' COLD here! We didn't make it UP to zero today. 😬 I'm looking forward to my family Christmas get-together on New Year's weekend, but... On Saturday, the day we head out, the HIGH is forecast to be -16 where we're going - North Dakota.

reply

that cold system came down from Canada - no need to thank me

reply

Don't worry, I won't! If you don't mind saying, what province are you in?

reply

Ontario

reply

You're good. We get a lot of what we call Alberta Clippers during the winter - snowstorms that fortunately are usually fast moving so they drop only a few inches of snow at a time.

reply

the system you're getting is the same one we are getting from the Arctic

reply

That doesn't surprise me. Canadians are nice and generous - they share their weather with us all the time! 😉 🙂

reply

We people here in Wisconsin don't blame you folks in Canada. We are use to this shit.
We did get up to 1degree F. this afternoon. The sun was shining!
Winter is really here! I'm just happy to say that I don't have to go out in it.
I just got a good book for Christmas. I plan to put on a kettle for tea and curl up and read! BLISS!
Might I add that I feel extremely fortunate to be able to say that when there are so many who have no warmth in these extreme temps.

reply

I don't blame Canadians either. I figure if it's bad here, it's even worse for them. We feel their pain.

The sun was out here today for only the 4th day this month. If you have to be out it's good for keeping the car reasonably warm inside, but that's about all.

reply

Agree about the car. My husband went out and ran the car and the truck for a little bit today. The car wasn't interested in starting at first. It needed a jump.
James may not feel that it's important to warm the car up, but they say that you ought to let it run for at least five minutes before you start driving. It's best for the transmission..

reply

The car guru I heard on the radio today said it's better to drive the car to warm it up. If it sits, then the transmission doesn't really get warmed up properly. I was smart this year. Last month I put a new battery in mine, even though I wasn't having any trouble. But the one that was in there was 8 years old and I didn't want to take any chances. I haven't driven my car for four days and it started right up today when I headed out to run errands.

reply

There are so many conflicting theorys on what is best. It's hard to know what is right.
The car guru on the news last week said it's better on the engine and transmission to let it run five minutes before driving. It made sense to me at the time.
Glad to know your car started right up. The husband has to work in the morning. We haven't had the car out in a couple of day's so he made sure that he'd be able to get moving in the morning.
Happy Trails!

reply

I should think it would maybe depend on the age of the car?? I know it used to be we always let the car warm up before driving. Now I guess you're not supposed to. I wish the car guru I heard today would have addressed the age factor. My car's almost 16 years old now. Makes me wonder whose rules I should follow.

reply

North Dakota wow...it sounds beautiful AND painful this time of year
Youre a tough lady
Safe travels:)
And Happy New Year🍻🎉😉

reply

It is beautiful. At least I think so. But I'm a prairie gal; I love the wide-open spaces. You can see for miles and miles. In summer you can watch the crop-dusters go through their acrobatics and see the whole routine. At night you can see the Milky Way. I'm in awe when I get to see that.

reply

Sounds amazing and id love to see the great wide open West some day
The great prarie seems intimidating though...i think id feel too 'small' there if that makes sense
Im tucked in the woods on the East Coast...

reply

It makes me feel a little small, but that's not a bad thing. As Bill Engvall said, "It's awesome, man!" Meaning, it leaves you in awe and wonder.

reply

Words to the not so wise:)
Much appreciated!
Stay warm dear Glen
Youre quite nice

reply

Now that's a good winter.Too bad we don't have it here.

reply

Temperature-wise, it's a real winter. We could use more snow - but not the five feet of it that Erie, PA has gotten over the past two days! I'd settle for 10% of that, though.

reply

I miss snow too. It's way to warm for this period, here.

reply

I think snow is pretty, but I do not like it at all when we get excessive amounts of it, plus I sincerely wish that my city of residence would do a better job of snow-removal after a heavy snowstorm. Driving in it can be pretty hairy, especially at rush hour, but I'm careful. I'm fortunate enough to have a garage space down in our building's basement, so I don't have to shovel out my car after a huge snowstorm.

One big problem in some parts of Boston is the fact that people reserve parking spaces that they shoveled out, so that they can park right near their houses when they get home from work, or whatever. In some places, if a person inadvertently takes another person's parking space, either due to not knowing the score, or out of aggravation at not being able to find a parking space, the consequences range from verbal abuse to assault on the miscreant's property or person if they're caught This problem is especially acute down in Southie (South Boston, MA).

reply

It's agreed--warming up the car's not such a hot idea, especially since it warms itself up while one is driving it.

reply

True. Just this afternoon I heard a radio segment where the local car guru said you should drive it to warm it up, not just let it sit in the driveway for however long. He also mentioned that today's cars handle the extreme temps much better than they used to. No need to start the car every day if you're not going anywhere (assuming you have a good battery, of course).

reply

Don't mention Christmas dinner, I'm feel stuffed like a turkey! And I've got to do it all again on New Year's Eve!

reply

I love it when I find a post from exactly a year ago. The driving was fine and the food was great. Another Christmas behind us. Now for some days of leisure.

reply

Yee-haa! Hope you had lots of fun, good food, good cheer, warmth and much laughter.

I had dinner at my mom's. It was nice.

reply

I found this one from 2 years ago. We had snow on Christmas Eve two years ago. Smooth sailing today.

reply

Be sure to warm up your Jeep...that makes jamesboland crazy 😀

reply

.....and layers, apparently.

reply

That guy meant business😂

reply

I think James thought I lived in Siberia. I wonder what happened to him.

reply

I assume he froze to death at some point...he really did seem concerned about the weather!
