Why do people consider anything above a 5 a good movie?

anything below an 8 should mean it's not good. anything a 9 is very good. anything a 10 is great.

Maybe because 5 is in the middle of 1-10? Also, some movies can have narrow appeal, so if it's not to someone's taste they're going to rate it pretty low, I should think. I'll go down to 7, but lower than that and I figure it's probably not worth my time.

5/10 is a failing grade, it's awful.

Why is 100 the average IQ score?

Extrapolate accordingly.

My personal theory is that anything below 7 is probably not worth watching. Anything above 8 is something I seriously consider watching. Anything above 9 is a must see. There are, of course, exceptions to both rules.
