I just spent 155$ on DVDs and Blurays

YEah I know, Im crazy for spending so much on a product that will soon be obsolete but what do you want, Im old school like that.

The thing is, 2/3 videoclubs are doing their liquidation sales before closing and it was 10 movies for 30$.

I went on a rampage and found a bunch of treasures.

Still, it was 155$...

I spend a lot on physical media as well, but no regrets, i see it no differently than other people collecting coins or stamps.

yeah, it'S just that after 20 years your stamps and coins are still good. They should actually have increase in value.

But I understand what you mean.

I see your point, but some people just collect for the sake of collecting, not as an investment or it's irrelevant for them if the value will increase/decrease. Subjectively my collection's worth will still be good even after 50 years, sitting back and admiring the collection sitting on the shelves is more than enough for me. I do realize i might belong to the minority saying that, but that's just how my brain is wired :)

Yeah, I really enjoy the whole process too. Buying them, writting them on my Microsoft word list, watching them, rating them, reviewing them, finding a place for them on my shelves...

The only thing is, I have a bad news for you; DVD's and Cd's have a life expectancy of about 20 years. After that they start to rot. :(

i think blu-ray's last a bit longer.

That's too bad :( But even the dvd cases, the artwork, the cover etc it's like a mini form of art for me, so even if they end up being unplayable (which is gonna be extremely unfortunate), the sentimental value will still be there!

The life expectancy of a commercial CD or DVD is 200 freaking years, which is why optical discs are called indestructible media, The life expectancy of a Blu-ray or 4K disc is the same 200 years, but these formats are more resistant to degradation by scratches than the first two formats.

Well, that, plus the fact that I have CDs that are well over 20 years old that sound brand new.

Well that'S not what I heard on the radio. And she mentioned that the rounds that appear behind the cd means it's rotting. And that starts around the 20 year mark. I personally have a few old cd's I had to throw away besause of that.

My friend, I have been one of the preeminent home theater designers for now over 16 years. Day in, day out. With all due respect, you might want to take my word over someone whom you heard in the radio. My Link Wray CD, which is 24 years old, sounds brand new. The reason why I have clients who will literally wait hours for me
is because I know whereof I speak. The choice is yours.

Or you could go to Google, do a search on "life exorbitanty of DVD."

Also as a sidenote, there are actually some physical media (DVDs) that their prices have been greatly increased after they went OOP. As an example :

This one goes for almost $300 used and it's not the only one. Believe it or not there is actually a circle of people that spend that much for rare, OOP media.

I was going to mention that, OOP or limited release movies will increase in value if in good shape and a film people still have interest in.

Happens to games to. I recently looked up the Persona for PS1 on ebay and that thing is expensive.

Yes, i wasn't even aware of that it just happened to randomly stumble upon limited released movies or OOP ones that i have bought years and years ago, when i browse to buy new ones and i see those old ones that are no longer widely available to go for crazy amounts. I am pretty sure if i select a couple of those from my collection and sell them via amazon or ebay i could make some serious cash. But then again, as i wrote before i am not interested in that at all, i am just happy to own them is all.
