Humor

Someone in another post was wondering if it's gotten worse or better..... I think it's got much worse.. Very vulgar and trivial, with no point of view. There's no satire... People think bitchery, mockery, and parody is satire... I'm talking a literate and humorous x-ray of society, and an onslaught, biting, dangerous.. That said, I also never cared for the slapstick, screwball stuff especially prominent in the 1930s, 40s, etc...

Just look at the stand-ups that probably set a lot of the tone, parameters.

I can only speak for the US, but after Mark Twain and Will Rogers, true stand-up emerged with Mort Sahl. Before him you had nothing except burlesque and vaudeville, and the occasional stupid mother-in-law joke.... Sahl is STILL (at 90) the best guy out there, but the 70s had George Carlin.... Bill Hicks is probably the 2nd best comedian ever, who was around in the 80s and early 90s..

And the same goes for the movies... Go and watch "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest" - it's still MUCH funnier, witty, and more relevant today than ever, and that was made over 40 years ago..

I could give many examples, but curious what you all think.

reply

I suppose that HUMOR IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER....
LOVE "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest"!
I also appreciate Dick Van Dyke! Talk about GREAT slap stick!!!!!

reply

It is subjective, of course, but I'm talking on a mass scale.... For example, how does technology affect this? I think it makes things a bit more conformist, since whatever is "TRENDING" is viewed, which is the exact definition of "Conformist" as opposed to people giving many things a chance.

reply

Ouch! You lost me.....
Conformist????
I am a simpleton. I realize that the Three Stooges would all be sent to prison these days for assault, but I still find them funny.

reply

Laurel and Hardy, too.

reply

Laurel and Hardy???? Great guys! Just not enough violence.
Stooges ALL THE WAY! No technology needed either! They did one BANG UP JOB!

I doubt that I will believe it.
I will definitely stay tuned.....
as long as I can stay out of the hospital!

reply

:)xoxo funny girl!

reply

"The Hospital" is pretty funny, with George C. Scott, but more nuanced.

reply

I see a few funny ones a year...i think comedy in general is doing just fine

reply

I think "Humor" is um, funny

about as funny as this stupid post, it doesn't matter what you think is funny, everyone likes different humor,
Sam Kennison had me rolling on the floor laughing, but you probably think he was gross. it's what makes the world go around.

reply

Well, humor in films and tv has changed. It has indeed become vulgar, loud, simple and with little variation. All comedies seem to be the same.

reply

This is true. Watch Leave it to Beaver......
Then watch what is going on today.

reply

In the real life,i have a bad sense of humour...i admitt.

reply

Gotta get out there croft!
Widen your horizons. There is much to be laughed at in life.

reply

Maybe...

reply

It's definitely gotten much worse. Most of it is in the gutter.

😎

reply

Any reason/s you think why?

reply

Aristophanes would agree with you.
