Fashions and Hairstyles of your youth....

Your responses will obviously give us an idea of your age.
I am just curious. What were some of the fashions or hairstyles that you loved as a teen?

I absolutely loved my white GoGo Boots with the zipper down the back, and like Winnie on The Wonder Years, I wore them with fish net stockings. That was the BEST thing! I had so many different colors! My favorite fishnets were the black or the dark blue. We were allowed to wear them with our school uniforms.... Blue and Black Plaid Jumpers. For those who are British, that isn't a sweater. It's a dress over a shirt/blouse.
Back to the GoGo Boots...... I begged the folks for so long. They were all the rage. I finally got them with my babysitting money, even though the folks thought they were not practical in Wisconsin winters. They thought I was wasting my money. Same with the fish nets!
Sad for me.... they had pretty much gone out of fashion several months after I finally got them. I still LOVED THOSE BOOTS!

Hairstyle? I loved my long shag! Kind of like the way David Cassidy wore his hair on the Partridge Family. It looked great on this girl!

When I look back now at the fashions and hairstyles of when I was young, I cringe. I can't love any of them now. I had them and wore them but it's a complete embarrassment now. I did the 80's big hair, with the big puffy half-bangs; god I can't bear to look at those pics of me now. I did do the Goth thing and my wardrobe was nearly all black. I cannot STAND to wear black now, it actually depresses me. I dress colorfully now like I'm making up for lost time in black all those younger years.

I didn't have a silky blouse but everything else I had contained the big shoulder pads, yes! Oh gaaaad it was a terrible look, in retrospect!

I mean, at the time we all thought it was right on the mark, and all that. But when I've taken out and looked at some of my old stuff now, or looked at the pictures, all I think is "What was anyone of us thinking?" :(

reply

I never wore the linebacker shoulder pads, but I did have a few tops that had "minor league" pads. They weren't so bad. I thought they made your posture look a little better. You know - shoulders back, chin up, etc. How many times my mother told me to "stand up straight" - sheesh. Oh, and "smile!"

reply

Prelude, I did all of those styles in my mid twenties to early 30's. Looking back at the pictures does make me laugh. The thing that always makes me cringe is those stupid SHOULDER PADS! What the heck were we thinking???? Were we suiting up for the BIG GAME????

reply

I know! Those shoulder pads almost got to "linebacker" proportions by the time that whole fashion started dying out, lol.

The funny thing is, there in the moment of it all, we all just thought it was the greatest look. Nowadays I'm like "I went out in public looking like that??" Lol.

Bellbottoms with cuffs and a high waist. Tent dresses - in my case worn with fishnet stockings. Short hair like Twiggy. I swear she started the whole skinny-scrawny model trend.

We are obviously of the same generation. LOL! Now I WELCOME the tent dress!
Oh, it isn't that bad yet, but those can hide a great deal of sins!

reply

Oh, bell-bottoms! Ahhhh, yes! I remember those, too. I liked wearing them. I think flared pants and long hair have started to come back in style.

Tent dresses were kind of cool. I had one, at one point.

I remember the Twiggy era, as well. I also recall accompanying my father out to Worcester, MA, where he photographed and did a story about this Twiggy contest. There were a bunch of girls who tried to look as much like twiggy as possible. The winner won a gift certificate for a lot of money's worth of twiggy clothes.

Remember the paper dress?

You wore white Go Go Boots?? Yikes!

"I Am the FBI."

reply

Why not? It was the mid 60's after all.
And you're asking this because????

In his replies, he's always asking that question. He still never answered me. [smile]

Just messin' with you, Margo.

I loved the pastel colored clothes I wore as a child in the 80s. And my Care Bears, My Little Pony and Barbie hair accessoires.

reply

I remember the big hair and the loud flowered shirts with the shoulder pads out to HERE!
It was a great time for children but we adults looked ridiculous.

reply

Well, we kids thought you looked fabulous! We all wanted to look like you when we grew up!

reply

As a woman who attended high school during the mid to late 1960's, I, too, loved wearing mini-skirts/dresses, penny loafers, and I had my very naturally curly hair straightened on a number of occasions, and then set it on this big, jumbo plastic rollers after shampooing it once a week (which was all I was allowed.), much to my dad's distress.

I also liked (and still like) rock-n-roll music, and I still keep my naturally curly hair long, but I've long given up setting it on the big rollers and sitting under the hair dryer for 2 hours afterwards. I do use a good shampoo, plus some good rinse-out and leave-in conditioners for my hair, and comb it out with a very thick-toothed comb.

reply

Hi, mplo!
You reminded me of the rollers! We had to set our hair every night and sleep in those things. I was actually use to it after many years. Once I got my shag cut that changed. I convinced my mother that a blow dryer was the way to go. We also were only allowed to wash our hair once a week. I simply wet my hair with a squirt gun each morning and out came the blow drier! LOL!

As for Rock&Roll, Me too! After all, that's what most of us grew up listening to. I do enjoy other types of music though. I enjoy Big Band music and Classical is soothing when I'm in the mood.

reply

Hi, MissMargoChanning.

I never slept in the rollers, but I sat under the dryer for a couple of hours afterwards. I'd go ape-shit when my hair got frizzy from rain or humidity.

I no longer use dryers, except when I go to my hairdresser twice a year for a hair-trimming and conditioning, and sprucing up my naturally reddish hair color. I only have her use the dryer on me if I go to get my hair trimmed, etc., during the colder weather, when she uses an adapter and turns it onto a somewhat lower temperature.

I still like rock-n-roll, especially the rock-n-roll of the mid to late 1960's, including the Beatles, but I also like folk, pop and classical as well. I prefer to sing the latter three types of songs, however.

reply

No more hair dryers for me either. They can really do damage!

I love the whole decade of the 60's if it's Rock&Roll. I had older sisters, so I grew up listening to the early stuff. I am a huge Beatles fan.

reply

Good points, MissMargoChanning! Those hairdryers are often turned up to temperatures that are hot enough to bake a cake with. That's the best way to do damage to hair, especially hair that tends to be dry to begin with.

Rock-n-roll music....I like the 1960's through the 1980's, although the 1970's saw the beginning of a decline. The old days are preferable to me, too, in that respect. Ditto for lots of the movies of the 1960's, as well.

I was the oldest of three kids in my family, and the only one of us kids who stuck it out in the public schools through high school. My younger siblings both went to private schools after elementary school. My sister and I both liked the Beatles.

reply

I didn't think I had anything for your post MissMargo, but I remembered some things. My teen years weren't that fashion adventurous, and our fashions weren't as distinct as some of the earlier decades I don't think, but I'll give my 2 cents.

As a pre-teen I had this pair of blue platform trainers. Like the Spice Girls wore! They were shiny and I loved them.

As a proper teen I remember cargo pants being a thing? Or just pants with really wide pant legs. I had this pair of brown/beige cargo pants, with lots of pockets, I mean lots, and pant legs wide enough to fit both my legs into one of them. I wore them with a pair of chunky platform boots in the winter. I still have them in fact (the pants), and they still fit, and they are still awesome.

As for hair, I didn't do much with it. When I did do something, I straightened it. But since I didn't have a flat iron, I used an actual iron.

As for make-up. I wore black eye pencil just on my waterline and light powder (as in the shade). No foundation or mascara or anything. Just the pencil and the powder. That "look" makes me cringe a little. In fact, I can sense a make-up guru losing her winged false eyelashes just as I'm thinking about it.

Wow, thanks for making this topic Margo! I love reading these answers. I really miss the eighties big hair from my high school days. My hair is super thick so I could effortlessly make it gigantic without too much fuss. I miss the big bangs and I'm so happy that I've been seeing them lately. They're back! Now if only those thick hair styles would come back.......there's always hope. Oh, and I always had a big can of Aquanet in my purse.

skorts

reply

Yes! Skorts! They came back last year. So comfy because you don't have to worry about bending over or keeping your legs tightly crossed.

jelly shoes

reply

I tried those but they were so sweaty.

reply

I love reading all of the answers too. This really is fun to look back on. Styles come and go.... and then they come back!

I swear, we all kept hairspray in our purses in the 80's. I spent a fortune on that stuff! I should have skipped the big hair and bought stock in Aquanet instead! [CHEERS!]
