Greatest voice ever?
Orson Welles
Morgan Freeman
Rod Serling
Who else?
James Earl Jones!
And since there are no females yet, and they're often not revered for their voices, let me add one:
-Teri Hatcher. Her work in Coraline was magnificent, and it really highlights what a great acting voice she has.
Hatcher is a great choice.
I would also add Nicole Kidman
Peter Coyote is a great narrator for many of Ken Burns's documentary series. I often think he sounds much like Henry Fonda though.
shareOne of the greatest narrators out there.
I also love Judi Dench's voice.
Geoffrey Holder
James Earl Jones

For singers--
Opera: Leontine Price
Pop: Eva Cassidy
"me"
LOL
I wish I could say the same.
I may be in the minority here but I really like Jennifer Lawrence's voice.
Emma Stone's voice isn't half-bad either.
My father was the news anchorman for the CBS radio and TV affiliates in our hometown. A lot of people who hear me over the phone think I'm AI.
Also: Tellulah Bankhead
Do you sound like HAL?
shareBetter.
And another plus: not psychotic.
lol
You are legit funny
Thank you. I used to write a humor column for The Boston Herald. I don't think the world can ever have too much laughter.
shareCoyote...good call!

Marvin Gaye was the Ultimate voice of Motown! "What's Goin' On?"! And with no technical augmentation.
But let me add, on the classic rock side of the street, one name: Elvis. Behind all the legend, behind all the history, behind all the anecdotes, was a voice (and I am convinced that no one can truly have a voice without also having a heart, e.g., the names I have named in this thread). Please listen to Elvis' album, If I Can Dream, released 2 years ago, with The King's greatest hits remixed with backing by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
I'm down with early Elvis.
Matthew McConaughey
Off-topic, but to go to the opposite end of the spectrum: someone PLEASE cut Chris Tucker's vocal chords, or give him a testosterone injection. Or both.
Turnip, please have a listen to If I Can Dream on the album I named. I hear you about middle-years Elvis; but this was the last song The King ever recorded, and it just pulsates with his roots. So does the entire album. Sometimes, we come full circle. My martial arts master taught me that the goal of a Master is to become, once again, a white belt.
Chris Tucker has an iconic comedic voice!
Was solid in Money Talks trying to sound Italian.... 😁

shareOne more vocalist: Barbra Streisand, of whom someone once said, "Streisand's problem is that she has more talent than she knows what to do with [sic--but factually true]."
And, if we are truly speaking of The Greatest Voice, you need not agee with me, but, to me, it is the voice of The Lord God, whom the Hebrews called Yahweh. I call Him that still. And I praise Him.
However, I think Turnip had more mundane replies in mind, so perhaps it's best to keep devine nominations in a separate category!

David Attenborough
shareYes.
shareYES!
Sometimes the American version of nature documentaries has the narration replaced by Alec Baldwin. Now I like Baldwin as an actor but he cannot hold a candle to Attenborough as a narrator. Nobody can! Why would they replace the Attenborough narration? I only want to hear him talking about fish and volcanoes!
I loved AB as the narrator of The Royal Tenebaums. Didn't know he had other narration credits.
