What did you watch this week? (16/07-22/07)

GOOOOD MOOOORNING!

Share your thoughts on my movies and I'll share mine on yours... you know the drill.

This week for me:

The Jungle Book (2016 Netflix): I think they should've hired real animals and get an animated human kid. That's what I think they should've done. Seriously though, the graphics were highly impressive but that young boy needs a few more years of acting practice. Or maybe he should just stick with school and then get a 9-to-5er. No wonder we don't hear one word from him in the entire trailer. At one point I just started working on the computer while watching... My three-year-old loved it. 4.5/10

Beasts of no nation(2015 Netflix): Talking about child actors, this little guy right here has the stuff. The good good stuff. Maybe the fact that this is a raw and harrowing masterpiece in its purest form helped. Maybe. I remember loving the little girl in Beasts of the southern wild but the movie itself had too many flaws for me to give it more than a 8. This one here, words can't even describe. Just watch it for yourself. Idris Elba gave a stunning and flawless performance ant the other young boy (Strika) too. Only thing that pisses me off is that I can't buy a physical copy of it for my collection. A 10/10 for me.
*Last 2 movies I gave this rating are the House of flying daggers and Apocalypse Now and it's been over a year now. A few others came really close. (Ex: The revenant, Mr.Nobody, What we do in the shadows)

Of mice and men (1992 DVD): When you've read a book 15 years ago and you still remember most of it, it proves the power it packs. When you decide to direct such masterpiece of a novel AND star as the main character, you better know what you're getting into. And Gary Sinise clearly knew what he was doing. I think that he succeeded in capturing the essence of the book and played George wonderfully. But my favourite was John Malkovich and his presentation Lennie. I just felt like giving him a big fat hug. The setting was also perfect, the cinematography was great and all the characters were close to what I imagined. 8/10

FX 2 (1991 DVD): Rarely does a sequel match the first one. This one exceeded it and that's even more of a feat. I did like the first one ( rate it a 6) but I feel like it was more of an installment to the second one then a standalone movie. (The two main characters met in the last minutes of the movie) This one felt more complete and I just loved it albeit some parts of the plot were a bit pushed. I love the JCVD and Arnie action flicks but this was refreshing entertainment. 7.5/10

Concussion (2015 DVD): This is a solid film but maybe not as great for me as for others. I found some good acting, an interesting story but the last 30 minutes was a bit weaker than the rest. (when the drama about the pregnancy comes in to play) I found the way the last part unfolded a bit awkward and too dramatic, although the very last scene was excellent. 6.5/10

Dragon: The Bruce Lee story (1993 TV): "A fictionalized account of the life of the martial arts superstar."
I missed the first 30 minutes but what I saw was not very impressive. Looked pretty standard but acceptable. 5.5/10

Another series for me this week: I watched the first season of Mad Men, thanks to the recommendation of several posters. It's picture perfect so far. 10/10

With so many series to catch up with, I somehow don't have time to watch actual movies.

reply

yeah, that is often a problem. Right now the only shows I concentrate on are It's always sunny in Philadelphia season 10 and Scrubs season 5. But im not binging them. ( yep, im more of a 'funny show' type of guy than serious show. Although I LOVED Fargo and Dr. House)

reply

I continued watching Family Guy. 14 seasons is hard to finish. 75% of the way done with season 14.

Get Out (2017) - More of a black comedy (no pun intended) as opposed to a true horror movie. 7/10

Life (2017) - A reasonably good sci-fi/alien movie. It reminded me of the first Alien movie in places. Ryan Reynolds doesn't hang around long. 7.5/10

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) - I thought this was a crime/medical drama and then it went all supernatural with witchcraft. Major letdown. 6/10

The Loch (2017) Season 1 - A serial killer is at work in a small Scottish town. A well done six episode series with plenty of suspects and twists. 8/10

The Circle (2017) - Great acting by Emma Watson but the script was lame not to mention the ending. 5/10

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) - One of my favorite Sci-fi movies of all time. I never tire of seeing it - cheesy effects and all. 9/10

reply

Haha! yeah I agree with you about Get out. Although it freaked me out.
I will make a strange connection but hear this; when you take patches to stop smoking you make very weird dreams, the movie's vibe kinda resembled those dreams I had.

Beasts of No Nation was a great movie - deserved more recognition. 9/10

Concussion - As a Steelers fan I found the Mike Webster part of the movie interesting but overall it underwhelmed. 7/10

we pretty much agree! Cheers mate

The Railway Man (2013, UK)
Decades after being imprisoned and tortured by the Japanese in Burma in World War II, a British ex-soldier copes with his trauma by withdrawing into himself and taking up an obsessive interest in trains. By chance he meets and eventually marries a woman and seems to begin to recover, but ultimately is unable to emerge from his shell despite her best efforts. Finally he receives word that his former torturer is in Myanmar, the former Burma, and decides to go there to confront him face to face.

I've also started watching the British TV series Cadfael (mid-1990s), about a Benedictine monk in 12th-century England who investigates and solves murders. I've only seen one episode so far but it's off to a pretty good start.

And of course i'm also watching the new season of Game of Thrones.

reply

Im just curious, can you provide further details on how the meeting went? Or did he even find the guy who tortured him?

reply

That might well constitute a spoiler. Are you sure you wouldn't rather just watch the movie? It's really very good. I'll tell you if you really don't mind having the ending spoiled, but it's better to just watch it.

reply

Ok, nothing from your review hints us that you found it great so now I'll look up for it. I always wondered why some people write reviews but don't put any personal ratings. It always help IMO. Isn't that what Imdb was for at the first place?

Hey, look at our posts amount, we are equally active on this site. he

reply

Oh, sorry about that. I suppose I'll try to include personal ratings from now on.

I never really thought about it, but I suppose the reason I haven't included ratings thus far is because nobody's taste is universal and I figure people will decide whether or not they're interested based on the plot summary. That's how I pick movies to watch. I don't always like movies that have high ratings, and I've quite enjoyed a number of movies that have low ratings. For example, the Chinese movie I posted about last week, Beginning of the Great Revival. Its IMDb rating is extremely low, but I liked it quite a bit and I think the low rating was mainly for political reasons. Personal taste is quite subjective. So I usually look more at the plot summary than the ratings.

Haha yep. I've been meaning to post more actually to support this site, and Game of Thrones has gotten me a bit more active lately.

How are you, raiders from all nations? I just come back from Thailand and in mean time i watched Indiana Jones and the kingdom of crystal skull...it's kind of irony in this...discover artifacts that turns out to be alien technology.

reply

haha, awesome! Did YOU discover anything in Thailand or..?

reply

Of course I did, stonekeeper.I discovered a temple with some norse connection to the underworld and one Thor's glove...it was amazing.

reply

The Host (2006) - don't know why this was getting such acclaim back when it was released. They tried to pack just too much in it and failed with the story telling. Boring, but sometimes unconventional and fun. 6/10

reply

Whaaaat!? I saw this for the first time 2-3 years ago and really enjoyed it. Great atmosphere, solid acting and just plain fun to watch. gave it 7.5/10

reply

The actors were good and the cinematography too. But too much rambling bored me.

reply

I thought there was way too much humor

reply

I love dark humor and think that it wasn't enought. However, I don't like how they mixed it with tear jerking drama.

reply

I saw the new Jungle Book once a while ago, as a rental soon after it was released on Blu-Ray. I liked it, but I think the original was better. You do have a point about the boy not acting very well; I think he was just too young. CGI was good. That, and I love animal movies, so I may be a bit biased. 7/10

Spider-Man Homecoming: I'd say it's the best Spider-Man film, although I know some people disagree and I didn't really like the other Spider-Man films to begin with. Peter's relationship with Tony was the high point of the movie. Good special effects and decent acting, but some of the high school scenes dragged a bit. 7.5/10

Zootopia: Rewatched this last night. A nice family film. Humor and a handful of plot twists. Nice idea and execution. 8/10

Also keeping up with Game of Thrones. Speaks for itself. 9/10

reply

I agree 100% with you on Zootopia.
