Crime dramas/murder mysteries TV series in small towns

What started this trend - was it Twin Peaks or Murder She Wrote ?? Strange trend as we are becoming more urbanized. I do enjoy them especially the UK one like Broadchurch/Happy Valley/Hinterland/Shetland and such.

Shadow of a Doubt

it was a movie

Was it a crime drama/murder mystery in a small town?

It bothers me when a post changes the rules set down by its title. Are we naming crime dramas/murder mysteries in small towns, or are we identifying what started this trend?!

Fargo (film and series covered - did not start trend.)

Fargo started as a movie and then got on the small town crime drama series bandwagon

The point is it doesn't matter if Fargo is a movie or not. You specified crime drama/murder mysteries in small towns. Fargo qualifies.

I corrected it to clearly indicate TV series however all the examples I gave were TV series.

These small towns always seem to have a LOT of crime for their size!
Murders every week, it's always hard to believe anyone would live there if there was a murder a week. (and only a few thousand people live there!)

I only watched Justified for three seasons... but that had the small town feel and it was a good show.

I really enjoyed an all day binge watch of Jesse Stone mysteries awhile back, set in the fictional, very corrupt small town of Paradise, Massachusetts.
