What did you watch last week? (18/06-24/06)

Good Sunday to you all. Hope you had a good week.

Here's mine:

Collateral Beauty (2017 DVD): I understood what was happening on the screen most of the time but in the end, I just didn't get it. I get the big picture but I just don't get the message or the purpose of all the work behind it. Plus I'm a very emotional guy when I watch TV and I did not even come close to shed a tear in this heavy handed melo-drama. I guess the beauty was hidden somewhere behind all the triteness. 4/10

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011 Netflix): Six years ago, this movie came out , I watched the trailer and shoved it aside among the "pile of garbage" category. Since then I've seen the other two, and although Cpt. America is my least favourite Avenger, I was now itching to watch the first. It wasn't that bad. The fact that my expectations were low from the start probably made it all easier to enjoy. The special effects are average, the acting is awful but the action is fun. A generous 6/10.

Surfer, Dude (2008 DVD): I picked this one off the shelf because I liked the cover picture. Then I saw that it had a 16 metascore and 4.7 on Imdb. Well you know what? Darn the critics because I enjoyed it. It has a very mellow vibe, it runs smoothly and the characters were good. I think other actors would've fit in the role a bit better than Matthew McConaughey (someone like Ledger, Leto or Bloom maybe) but he was okay. The last 20 minutes is a bit shaky in the knees but overall, it's a good simple movie if you just want to take it easy.
6.5/10

Dead or alive 2: Tôbôsha (2000 DVD): I am very fond of Takashi Miike. Can you believe that the guy directed over 100 movies? I think he's the reference when looking for weird Chinese movies. This one is no exception. Even though half of it didn't make any sense to me, I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. ( I started it late and was tired)....

DOA 2: ...There is many random scenes, unrelated to the plot, scattered throughout the movie and they are quite disruptive. It also raises some questions. Literally. The movie just stops and ask you a question. It happened four or five times. That's Takashi Miike for ya. Bottom line is, I laughed a few times, it made me smile, and it was fun. 6.5/10

The Rocker (2008 Bluray): I had no expectations, did not know the actors and went into this one clueless. I was agreeably surprised. It's funny and it's a feel-good comedy perfect for a lazy Saturday afternoon. The main actor stepped on my nerves at first but I warmed up to him with time. As for Teddy Geiger, the kid impressed me with his musical abilities and his discreetly solid performance. He reminds me so much of one of my good American friends. I say: don't judge by the title or the cover and give this one a chance and you might enjoy it like I did. 7/10

I also watched the first two episodes of season 10 of it's always sunny in Philadelphia. It's very promising for the rest of the season because they were awesome!

The Missing (2016) Season 2 - Excellent all around and better than Season 1. A great story line involving the disappearance of two young girls. Plenty of twists which will keep you watching til the very end. The guy who plays Julien Baptiste is just great. 9/10

The Hateful Eight (2015) - This was sitting on my cable movie channel for two years and about to drop so I invested Friday evening watching. Entertaining but not great. Funny in parts and some good performances (Jennifer Jason Leigh) but the plot was predictable. Hollywood can't make Westerns anymore 7.5/10.

The Witnesses ( Les Temoins) (2014) Season 1 - This is a French crime drama set in a small town in Normandy. Someone is digging up the corpses of people who have recently committed suicide - turns out they were not suicides but homicides. A very involved plot and you have to pay attention with subtitles but I had no problems following. Well acted with so many great shots of Northern France. 8/10

Hush (2016) - another home invasion movie with a twist - the victim is deaf and mute. This was reasonably good 7/10

The Company You Keep (2012) - A former Weatherman (a 1970s terror group) is outed by a local newspaperman and is on the run. I thought Redford was too old for the part and its sad to see Shia LeBeouf's once promising career seemingly over. Not very compelling at all. 6/10

Johnny Cash: American Rebel (2015) - A very good doc on one of my favorite performers. Well done 8.5/10

Hey hownos!

I thought hateful eight was all about atmosphere and dialogue. I loved every bit of it although I would agree that it's not a masterpiece. 8.5/10

reply

maybe I was a bit tough on it

reply

You rated it pretty highly. I agree with you and StoneKeeper -- it was a 7-8/10. I think you're right on the money with your criticisms. It dragged a little and was definitely predictable with the exception of
Sam Jackson's character getting shot in the babymaker, because we had no idea that dude was hiding in the cellar
.

reply

The Missing was outstanding.
Wonder if there will another season.

reply

we can hope for a season 3

reply

I'll second that, The Missing was outstanding. Also, per Stoonekeeper's review, I thought the second season was even better than the first.

reply

Have you seen The Returned ? Another one I hope makes one more season.

reply

Yes, I liked that one too. There's been a lot of great tv lately. It's really spoiling me. I hope it keeps up. It's nice to have so much access to so many foreign tv shows too. We get to see a lot of their best shows. Although, I am getting pretty tired of some of these plot lines, we seem to get mostly their mystery and police shows. I'd like to see something different. I really liked The Borgias. I think that was produced by Canal+ or some European production company. Maybe it was made for our market? I'm not sure but it was great.

reply

That is true. Most of them are mysteries. Luckily I haven't seen many of them so
I'm not sick of them yet. I'll have to look for The Borgias. So many good ones not enough time.

reply

That was on Netflix. Netflix has a lot of good foreign tv shows.

reply

I have Netflix. I just never get a chance to use it. I always have something else to watch.

reply

I thought The Returned was canceled months ago

reply

The original French series. The American version was horrible.

reply

i agree

reply

Had you heard there won't be a new season ?
Last I heard it was being considered.

reply

haven't heard anything

reply

I tried to watch the American version. It just wasn't good.

reply

Jack Reacher : never go back.

reply

I saw The Hateful Eight in the cinema, and unfortunately dozed off a bunch (not the movies fault though). But what I saw of it, I liked. Jennifer Jason Leigh is awesome to watch in it. And coupled with Kurt Russell, I'd be happy just watching that.

Hush was very refreshing, from the deaf/mute lead angle. But other than that, it was a bit of "more of the same" IMO.

Transformers The Last King. 2/10

What a stupid movie. I walked out in the middle. The worst 20 dollars that I've spent on a movie.

reply

Did you like the other Transformers movies?

Because if you didn't, you knew what you were in for...

reply

I liked 1 and 3. I never saw the others. The movie had so many flaws in it that there isn't enough space to go down the line with a description of what made it a stupid film. I know now that if another sequel is made, I'm not going to see it.

Sleepers- 1996. I saw this movie when it first came out. It do much for me. I watched it again and my
feelings didn't change much. It has an incredible cast but I really didn't care about anybody in that movie.
I though the kids did a better job than the adults. 6.5

Stanford Prison Experiment-2015. Based on true events in 1971. it's about a study of peoples behavior.
Half the people were picked as prisoners and half guards. Interesting that this actually happened and
some of the things that did happen. -7

I Remember Mama-1948- Superb acting, superb writing. -8.5

Everybody Wants Some-2016. This is the follow up to Dazed and Confused. Directed by Richard Linklater.
Had some really funny scenes. Great soundtrack and brought back some good memories. I didn't like it
as much as Dazed and Confused-7

Towering Inferno-1974. Another movie with a stellar cast. One of the many disaster movies of the 70's-6

Finished season 3 of 12 Monkeys and season 1 of Brockmire.

I'm a huge fan of Takashi Miike. He's made some of my favorites. DOA 2 isn't his best work but still a decent movie.
You can never go wrong with the gang at Paddy's Pub. The gang group dates was hysterical.

reply

Haha! Yeah, cheers. Thanks for the reviews.

Sleepers really marked me when I saw it back then. It might have lost a bit of its quality with time but I still think of it highly. 8/10

I bought everybody wants some recently. DaC is a favorite of mine, hope I'll like this one at least as much as you.

Manchester by the Sea: Not a whole lot there

Zoolander 2: After a while, I just fast-forwarded to the actor/character who was in love with Hansel. Struck me funny for some reason.

John Wick 2: It was fun, over-the-top, but liked the first one more.

I've seen Caprain America:The First Avenger and I remember very little about it, except how silly the effect to little-fy Chris Evans looked. And how good regular Chris Evans looked... Other than that, I generaly find the Marvel movies to be incredibly bland.

The Raven (1963)
Vincent Price spends the first 20 minutes or so talking to a bird. Need I say more? It’s a fun, enjoyable movie, with a great cast of classic actors, and a young Jack Nicholson.

My Name Is Emily (2015)
After the loss of her mother, young Emily is left with her father, who struggles to deal. Now in foster care, she runs away, with a boy, to go break her father out of a psychiatric clinic. It was a charming film at times, but it’s not even a week after I saw it, and I struggle to find much that was memorable about it.

Carrie (1976) /rewatch/
Getting your first period is always a bitch. If you don’t turn into a werewolf, you’d get telekinetic powers. In either case, you’re bound to go on a killing spree (I’m yet to reach that particular stage of womanhood). Good thing it’s accompanied by some wacky 70’s music! I felt for Carrie, I liked that the teacher went around slapping students… And that beginning scene always makes me so angry! So, yeah, I like Carrie, even with the silly music and wacky sped up scenes.

Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (2004)
The story of an American plank of wood, who falls for a boy from Cuba, and his Cuban Sex Dancing. None of the excitement and emotion of Dirty Dancing, with the added bonus of the looming Communist Revolution! The music was bad. The dancing was bad (and not that dirty, really). The leads had no chemistry. The conflict was… blah. Patrick Swayze was in it for some reason!? Also, Mya. Remember early 00’s pop sensation Mya? Yeah, thought so… The only thing worth it in this movie was Diego Luna, and that’s just barely. Having said that, I watched all of it, and I only rolled my eyes in exasperation during 75% of it.

Another great read! Thanks.
(Indeed, I had forgotten bout Mya)

reply

I'm glad I wasn't wrong about Mya :D

I really enjoy these threads SK, and it's something I look forward to at the end of the week :)

Hey, Stone. I only have one contribution for this past week:

2 Days in the Valley -- a kind of offbeat, but generally entertaining little thriller with very subtle overtones of Tarantino. It involves diverse, sometimes quirky and darkly amusing characters (which contributes to that) whose lives not only intersect but collide as well. I always enjoy this particular type of storytelling which invokes a subtle sense of kismet. It contains some very recognizable faces and names; all actors involved do a fine job. Yes, it's flawed but overall a good watch. 6.5/10.

reply

Cool, I'll look it up.
