Jim, could you please talk to your moderators?

Jim,
I have been contacted several times by the moderators. In response, I promised them when someone gets abusive, I will simply walk away. And that is precisely what I have done, even though one poster continues to egg me on.

This poster continues to say he's reporting me for "flaming". What exactly is that? It's beginning to appear that if a poster disagrees with another poster, even with no profanity or name calling, it's considered "flaming". Are we a bunch of snowflakes here?

I love Movie Chat, but I'm beginning to feel the cold breeze of censorship. Does the First Amendment mean nothing here? And other posters have expressed the same opinion.

I would love to hear your response.
Thanks,
MovieManCin2

That don't work,i contact him, about 3months ago,and ask him if he can bring the Tomb Raider boards from imdb...still no results.

reply

Maybe not about that. But it works for other things.

reply

We shall see.

😎

reply

I also just emailed him. Thanks for his email address.

😎

reply

He replied to me fast when I had a tech issue, and he was very nice. He's probably busy and may not have time to handle request type emails?? I'm sorry if I'm assuming a lot here, I just wanted to pipe up that he does reply and sort things. :)

reply

Thanks for the email address. I will contact him directly.

😎

reply

And try the ignore button.

reply

Thanks for the suggestion, but what exactly does the ignore button do?

😎

reply

It... ignores! 😲

reply

Well yeah thanks kamen, but does it actually block his responses to me?

😎

reply

Be careful with it MMC2. At this point it probably does more harm than good. About half the time when I go to click on "jump to latest", I can't see the post. Apparently, it blocks all responses to those that you have blocked as well, and I've only blocked a few people so far, so I won’t use it anymore until the bugs are worked out.

reply

What is the "MMC2", wanton?

😎

reply

Sorry, I was being lazy. It's you abbreviated πŸ˜€

reply

No problemo. I should have realized that. Dopey old me. Nothing wrong with being lazy, I am myself.

MMC2. I kind of like the sound of that.

😎

reply

I'm not very sure. But I used it a few times and I think it hides the ignored user's all kinds of posts, replies and even the entire branch from you. He can still reply to yours though. Other people may still see them just fine. But from your perspective, he will vanish without a trace.

Good enough on my cases.

reply

Mmmmm. Okay, thanks for that. Not sure I want to do that.

😎

reply

Also don't apply the block button willy nilly. Once you block a user, it can't be undone (unless that has changed now). So if you're only momentarily annoyed with a user, just mentally ignore them until you're sure. Just in case they end up being people you can have fun on the board with!

reply

Thanks for the good advice. I'm going to continue to ignore the block button. And that does happen sometimes.
You start out as antagonists, and end up being friends.

😎

reply

I met one of my fav people on the net that way. I ignored him on imdb for a whole day, but the board I was on was too boring without him. And now we're good buddies. β™‘β™‘β™‘

reply

Or you may just be a very strange individual. lol

reply

There is that... πŸ˜‡

reply

We all get rises out of different things.

Sometimes they say, when someone ignores you, they actually like you. Then again, more often than not, it is not always true. Life experience.

reply

Well, in a way, if someone exasperates you and you kinda enjoy it, it's like flirting. Kinda puts the kybosh on all that romance if you can't undo an ignore. lol

reply

Did we really have to go there...

reply

Where?? Did I say something bad?

reply

Isn't life funny? It's what happens while you're planning something else.

😎

reply

Planning? I have an allergy for most of that....

reply

LOL, Cat!

Ignore just makes YOU unable to see the other person's posts.
Their posts and any direct replies nested under it will become invisible to you while logged in.
The other person can still see your posts, and they might keep replying to you and picking fights, but you won't see it.
You will keep getting notifications for their replies though, which is super annoying. That might make you curious enough to log out just to see what they said, and then you are right back in that cycle of wanting to respond to their poking.

reply

Thanks for the info, Kernel. I think I will ignore the ignore button.

😎

reply

yeah it would be much more useful if it didn't still send notifications.
Jim built it in a hurry because a small group were demanding it urgently, and I think the rush job resulted in limited usefulness.

reply

Thanks. Sounds like a flaw which needs to be fixed.

The first amendment does not mean much on a heavily regulated forum. Forums are private entities, or so, when moderators are part of the mix. Public forums would be ones without moderation.

But yes, I have seen Naps on your tail in the politics section.

reply

Thanks, but I disagree. I believe it applies everywhere.

You and I don't always agree, but you're a man of integrity, and I respect you.

😎

reply

That's fine, but it is kind of a private forum. Jim started it up on his dime and now ads. It would be up to him. The Constitution was made in the event that the government cannot take away certain rights, from the people, and usually it is within any public related area. Since this site is run privately, it is private, not public. The amendment would not apply.

reply

Correct. The First Amendment protects speech from government interference only.

reply

Yes. We value free speech as a society, but the 1st Amendment protects you only from government censorship, and event that is not without limits.

Other than that, you have a right free speech, but not free speech without consequences. Witness Bill Maher's recent problems.

reply

Again, only on his tail reporting stuff because I"m following his lead....

Kettle, meet pot. Just doing the exact same thing you do....

This look familiar? Your post, to me, 3 days ago:

"Since you just violated the standards by name calling purple, I have reported you to the Moderators. You should be hearing from them shortly. Have a nice day."

I responded asking where I name-called. You of course never responded. But purple did:
"I didn't see any name calling either"

You did the exact same thing in the same thread, again, with no name-calling. And you've done it a number of other times. Now you're whining about the same thing being done to you.

Be sure to tell Jim the whole story...and if you don't, I will.

reply

But then I wonder. MovieManCin is getting all the moderation. How about you? Did you receive anything? If not, then he is definitely in the wrong, as you would be getting the same punishment he is facing.

reply

No, others have been getting harassed by Mod2, myself included. Read the other threads about it

reply

When one of the most prolific contributors on this site is getting notifications and warnings from the grotesque Moderator 2, something is definitely wrong. I.am trending this topic again to let those who are so ardently in support of heavy moderation realize there is a real and growing problem that threatens to destroy this site.

reply

Metatron,
Thanks for your support. Jim said he would talk to the Moderator, so hopefully we won't have any more problems.
I'm not a snowflake, so I like a free and open forum. If someone gets abusive, I simply walk away. No big deal.

Regulations should be in place; however, humans make errors. In the case where MovieManCin is being nagged, the moderators may be missing an entire side of a story. In the case of a forum, I would say to make most things passive. Spend more time making sure the ignore button works and putting in place censor filters.

Moderators, like politicians, undoubtedly make mistakes.
