Bill Maher said the n-word.
I'm not black so I don't care though.
shareDon't worry. He won't pay the way Paula Dean or Michael Richards did.
shareBecause they said it with malice. It's a big difference between a joke and being malicious.
sharePlus he did nothing wrong. He made a reference.
shareWell I wouldn't call it just making a reference. He made a joke. Just like REAL PEOPLE do in REAL LIFE. No fake outrage from internet/media folk. Because in the real world, people make jokes all the time. I was talking with my black Dominican supervisor one day and we were talking about what nigger and spic means and the different connotations they can have and he comes out with "So I'm a Spic-Nigger" and we were both dying with laughter. Because in the real life real world, people make jokes and it's not a big deal. If I called him that term out of malice, then that would be the wrong thing.
shareA job I worked some 20+ years ago, you could joke with others about things like that without it turning ugly.
I won't say my nationality here but it never bothered me to hear those jokes (about mine) and they had no issues with ones about them -- as long as people didn't mean harm and you knew who you could/couldn't or shouldn't joke around with. We knew we respected one another.
People are too touchy these days.
I don't like the N word or the S word (for Hispanics), etc.
What boggles my mind is when black people use the N word so freely and frequently but are so highly offended when it comes from anyone other than black.
I guess maybe it is one of those situations like for example when I was a kid - I will pick on my younger sibling but don't anyone out of the family dare do it.
Am I on to something here? If that's what it is, fine.
Either way I won't use those words but I do think generally speaking people are too easily offended these days.
There was a thread here a couple months ago about tv shows that would never make it these days because of our PC culture now. Does anyone remember this thread I'm talking about?
There used to be a time when people could laugh at themselves.
April,
I didn't hear the Bill Maher thing in it's context but my point was, if it's someone liberal, you'll recover much easier.
As far as Paula and Michael, I already forgot the details surrounding those stories but I do recall their punishment being worse than their crime.
Madonna should be in prison for her comments which were a direct threat to our President yet nothing became of it. But one mention of a certain word, look out!

Oh, Michael's punishment was WELL DESERVED. This is what we call going bat shit crazy!!
And THIS is a joke:

Really? You cared enough to post about it.

A Conservative would be nailed to the wall for using that word. Liberals, on the other hand, can get away with just about anything.
π
Kramer lost it and called black patrons the n-word repeatedly and called for them to be lynched. Paula Dean was laughing at the hired help like a fat racist slave owner or something, and offended her employees on the basis of race. Sean Penn's son called a black man the n-word on video. People were not cool with it just because his father is a liberal.
The difference between cons and liberals is that Bill called HIMSELF the n-word. What does that even mean? It's too absurd to even be mad. This "controversy" was bound to happen though, as this isn't the first time he's used the word on his show. I never liked it in any context so hopefully he'll stop now.
I don't know much about Kramer, but I doubt he's a conservative. And I know nothing about Paula Dean or Sean Penn's son. I stand by my statement.

Generally, I agree with you. Liberals get away with more because the media is less likely to call much attention to it. What little conservative media that exists will, but not really be heard. But . . . look at Kathy Griffin. I thought she would be praise by the left for her sick joke, and she actually got it a lot harder than I expected.

Yes I was very surprised by that. I was even more surprised that CNN actually fired the little skank.

Since you just violated the MovieChat standards by flaming, I have reported you to the Moderators.
You should be hearing from them shortly.
Have a nice day.
(just following your lead, ace)
I'm not sure flaming a celebrity, or any 3rd party not posting in the thread is what they had in mind.

Let me rephrase my comment slightly.
If a Conservative comedian had said this, his/her hide would be nailed to the wall.
