There is barely anyone here and this mod keeps bugging me every time I have an argument. I'm sorry, isn't this a discussion board? I'm not allowed to speak my mind? He called it "trolling" because some babies reported my posts when they lost an argument. It's unreal.
I want to support this site, but if I can't even have a discussion, what is the point? I just don't know if I'm the only one this is happening to.
Yet another Mod2 entry...heard from him last night that one of my posts was trolling. When I responded that 1) maybe he should've read what I responded to, he ignored that, and 2) it fit no definition of trolling, he said it was really "inflaming"...not flaming, but "inflaming." Once again, would answer no question directly; just kept dancing around it and repeating himself with "use report and ignore." When I noted that ignore doesn't work correctly, no response. When I noted that some obvious troll posts I reported (several posters agreed), based on his advice, were still there after 4 days, his answer was "you have to give us time and don;t worry about other posters"...from the guy who advises everyone to report them.
The best was when he quoted himself (in quotations) from what he said was a "transcript" of our conversation, and the quote was completely different than what he actually said. I pointed this out to him several times, even posting his original quote. First he ignored it. When I pressed for a straight answer, I got, "Well it's a transcript, but I paraphrased myself."
And not to sound nitpicky, but Mod2 apparently has no idea of the difference between "to" and "too". Uses them interchangeably. One would think a mod would have a better grasp of English. But, admittedly, this is pretty minor.
Yea Mod2 likes warning people over any old shit. I got accused of posting a link to porn which was actually a link to a youtube vid about climate change. I pointed this out so he changed his mind and said the warning was for using the word "cunt" you would have thought if these cunts don't like naughty words they could block them words... even the most basic of free forums has the ability to censor words.
Can't be doing with heavily moderated forums... I got banned a few weeks ago for calling Americans fat.
Moderator 2 is a thoroughly loathsome creature who has abused whatever "power" he thinks he's gained from the start. He banned me a couple of months ago for ridiculous reasons for which I had to get Jim to intervene. Here is a response I made on the Halloween 3 board a few days ago after one of its regular contributors received a "troll" warning from the odious Moderator 2:
I'm willing to wager it was Moderator 2 who contacted you, He has already contacted me a couple of times. A recent time involved supposed "spamming" because I was making Fred: The Movie trend by providing questions or observations on that terrible film which, like Halloween 3, is a bad movie it can be amusing to study. Somebody posted about Moderator 2 recently on General Discussion. He is awful, and this site will never gather steam if people hear about excessive moderation and censoring of posts. The only reason I haven't left already is because the site conveys at least the illusion it is something like IMDb and contains most of the old posts from there, though I will probably eventually weary of any forum with heavy and unnecessary moderation.. I don't see any substantial growth in the site the past few months. I am, however, seeing quite a lot more dumb ads and clickbait, making the site look cheap and unprofessional. But my major concern has always been excessive moderation, supposedly to protect the online community against the troll bogeyman that some people on this site are so afraid of. Have these people who argue in favor of more moderation ever heard of the Ignore button? That's the best way to handle trolls, which is why I was never bothered by them on IMDb despite Col Needham's bullshit statement to the contrary.
I've already noticed The Mummy board is deserted, which is disappointing. Overmoderation kills websites. Bluray.com, RealGM and reddit come to mind. They're practically unusable because the mods ban you at the drop of a hat.
That's disappointing to hear about Reddit, as I had heard that's where the vast majority of message boards users went after IMDb, though I don't like the layout of it and have never posted there. I'm going to have to start feeling out other options as the situation is becoming highly unstable here. I refuse to be intimidated by power-mad moderators who take their roles too seriously.
Facebook went to shit in recent years too. Deleted my account because I basically kept getting banned for telling stupid people off. Not going to be treated by a little kid by Mark Zuckerberg, sorry. The site is trash, if anyone still owns stock in that company, they're an idiot.
The majority of posters have never even heard from a moderator. Those that have are almost always those who enjoy a good old flame war and seem to then go to and fro reporting each other.
God how feffin' hard is it to just behave like a mature adult.
Fed up of all the whinging. All of the posters who moan about moderators keep threatening to leave. Just do it then!
I'd agree Dazed however I've just been warned by Moderator1 for conduct you witnessed and neither you nor I seemed to think my behaviour was off n that situation.
I'm thinking people are abusing the report system which, in turn, means the moderators have to look at campaigns of harassment rather than simple moderation of bad conduct done in poor faith.
I'm not worried about it, the moderators probably have a lot on their plates but that's two warnings I've received now and on each occasion it was been about volleying back a retort rather than looking to pick on someone in the first place at my end.
I can expect an answer like this from you, Dazed, as well as LeiaofLorathian. Both of you have proven to me to be the type of lickspittles who have never once seen the dangers that heavy moderation pose to this or any other site. Now even one of the most prolific contributors on this site, MovieManCine, has also been issued a warning and vocalized his displeasure. Word of this gets around beyond this board. Have you not noticed the site is not growing? Ever wondered why?
Lickspittles? Please. [eyeroll] Not unless the traditional definition has been changed to "reasonable, rational adults who can and do discuss topics civilly."
The dangers of "heavy moderation?" First, overall I don't believe it is heavy, as evidenced by the posters in this thread, most of whom have had no problem with the mods. Secondly, this is a site devoted to chatting about movies and TV shows, for god's sake. Thirdly, Reddit is a highly successful site, and I've seen people post the moderators there are quite active, and no doubt you'd find their moderation to be "heavy" too.
How do you know this site isn't growing? I keep seeing all kinds of new users on various boards.
Re: reddit -- there are subreddits where the mods have set up bots that will preemptively and automatically ban you just based on your subscription to or posting activity in certain other subreddits. You needn't even make one post on the banning sub to warrant being excluded.
Really. Okay, I'd have to agree that is heavy-handed. I've gone to a couple of sub-Reddits to read, off and on, but dislike the format and have never bothered to sign up, so didn't realize how moderation was done there.
I too am favourably impressed with MC moderation. It can be a fine line between being too stringent, and too lenient. A balance has to be reached, or that being the goal.
