Bacon fanaticism -- MYSTERY SOLVED

When did this start, and why?

First I noticed it was about 5 years ago. Suddenly hoards of people were talking about bacon, for reasons unknown to me. Was there some bacon lobby at work behind the scenes?

Last week I went to Trader Joe's and was looking for Morningstar's facon (fake bacon). I like the flavour of bacon, especially in a BLT, but have never been able to get behind something that's >fat.

I asked the employee where they'd moved it, commenting that I liked it better than bacon because it had all the flavour, but wasn't primarily fat.

A woman overheard me and felt compelled to say "I don't think I could *trust* someone who doesn't like bacon." Obviously she wasn't entirely serious, and yet, there was a distinctly serious edge there.

I find this bizarre, and it's not the first time I've encountered it. Until more recently, if you loved bacon, that was fine, and if you didn't, that was fine too.

I can't imagine anyone in a similar circumstance saying such a thing if a stranger they overheard said they didn't like strawberry ice cream, so what's the deal with bacon fanatics?

Edit: After spending some time with my friend Google, I found the answer(s). Will make a separate post on it.

reply

It's because of the muslims.

reply

Exactly what I had told her. She never believed me.

reply

Ofcourse that's the reason. I always go sit in front of the mosque and eat a nice ham sandwich.

reply

Well, at least you do not go inside.

reply

Oh, but I do go inside after I'm finished...without taking off my shoes!!!

reply

Why not just grab a pig and let it loose inside?

reply

Poor piggy! Maybe next time.

reply

kevin bacon?

reply

I will say what's particularly delicious is a warm peanut butter and bacon sandwich on toast.

reply

I will have to try that at some point.

reply

A variation of the Elvis sandwich .

I've noticed this online in recent years (since I don't have first hand observations on the US). And it gives off the impresion that you guys sure love bacon. A lot!

Personaly, I've never been a big fan of bacon, because I don't like fat (I'm always scraping it off of the meat I'm eating). But on the rare occasion I get a 100g of it at the supermarket, I always eat it raw. Just thinking of all that grease makes me a little sick.

But if you guys think bacon is too fatty you should check out slanina (or salo as it called in some places). That's basically just the fat seasoned with spices. What's with people and this love of pig fat?

reply

Pleasure. Food is very much like a drug. It releases good feels.

"Edit: After spending some time with my friend Google, I found the answer(s). Will make a separate post on it. "

so what was the answer?

reply

Google had nothing to do with it. She just had a few strips of crispy, juicy, scrumptious bacon and all was revealed.

reply

The bacon lobby spend millions dropping bacon in conversations in guerilla marketing. Appealing to the "bad boy" impulse so people who eat bacon can feel part of a close conspiratorial movement, like smokers do these days. Bacon is a thing now.

Been having computer problems. Still am, but for the moment things are calm.

If you thought this had anything to do with religion or politics, it doesn't.

Bacon obsession is A Thing, based in North America -- the States and Canada -- but may have spread out over the years.

1. It did start in the fast food industry in the 1990s, with the burger chain Wendy's, soon followed by Carl's Jr., Burger King, and others. Bacon was cheap, and a cheap way to introduce a new burger that would appeal to taste buds and create an increase in sales. Fast food customers weren't exactly all that concerned about the lean, low fat, no fat diets that had become so popular, so it was a pretty safe bet.

There was the problem of cooking bacon on the premises, which caused too much smoke and grease, which was solved by the pork industry and the new technology of pre-cooked bacon.

2. It has a lot to do with blowback towards and defiance of the low/no fat dietary food trends. A sort of chest-beating "You're not the boss of me!" "freedom" cry reaction, and yeah, decadence too.

3. The popularity in the 2000s of the Atkins and other diets where carbs were the enemy, and you could eat as much high-fat foods as you wanted.

4. The whole "foodie" culture, also becoming popular in the 2000s, and the corresponding rise in the advent and popularity of food shows, which jumped on the "who cares about fat?" bandwagon, with bacon and other fatty foods regularly being featured and used as ingredients.

5. The interwebz. Bacon obsession caught on and became viral. Some say it started with a guy who posted photos or a video of his cat with bacon taped to him or her. Doesn't matter exactly what caused the tipping point that caused it to become a mania, only that that is what it's become.

There are bacon bras, bacon-scented tuxes, bacon-flavored condoms and lubes, bacon jewelry and toilet paper. There are bacon desserts such as bacon cupcakes, ice cream, cake, and the list goes on.
