Movies that you thought would be terrible but actually not that bad

I just finished watching Underwold: Blood Wars and honestly I didn't have a high expectation, but it turns out to be a rather well-made movie.

Especially considering that it's a FIFTH installment of an often harshly criticized franchise. They didn't need to make it this good, but they did. Overdelivered if I must say.

From my recent memory here is some other movies I found better than what I initially suspected:

Angry Birds the Movie
Paterson
127 Hours
21 Jump Street
Tropic Thunder

Final Fantasy was initially of interest to me because of the CGI, but it's actually a good movie and not a tech demo, as I was fully expecting.

I have only seen Resident Evil and Biohazard: Damnation. All I can say Japanese know how to make beautiful CGI animation for adults.

Legally Blond. I saw the previews to that and thought it was the stupidest looking film ever. I thought to myself, why would anyone ever see that. A few years went by and I was watching something on television. The movie I watched ended and L.B. came on afterwards. I planned to turn off the TV or turn the channel but I lingered a bit and the intro song that played at the beginning of Legally Blond kept me listening as it had a catchy tune (Perfect Day by Hoku https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyQPJzAG07c)

I kind of got sucked in and kept intending to flip to another channel but ended up liking the film.

Also: Shawshank Redemption. I didn't think it looked terrible, I just thought it looked kind of dull. I didn't expect a bleak prison movie full of dull grey colors to be as good as it was. It's one of my all-time favorite films.

So, Legally Blonde was good? Unbelievable! I saw the trailer many years ago and also thought it was the stupidest premise for a movie and never even considered it into my watchlist.

Alright then, when I saw that movie on tv I'll watch it.

About Shawshank, yeah.. the poster looked like a boring movie. Not very underestimate it too much though cause it has Irish Morgan Freeman on it. One of my favorite film as well.

The character Morgan Freeman played, Red, was supposed to be an Irishman.

He was in the Stephen King novella "The Shawshank Redemption and Rita Hayworth". Hollywood used Freeman but didn't rewrite him being Irish Red even though it didn't really make sense.

I agree with you on both of these. They were both surprisingly good. I love Shawshank Redemption. I think you're on to something when you described the marketing approach. The first movie was promoted, in my opinion, as a teen movie and I thought they underestimated its appeal. The second was hardly promoted at all, at least as far as I can remember.

There are probably lots, but one that caught me off guard was Magic Mike. I didn't expect for it to be what it was.

That's funny to me, because I hadn't heard of it until I stumbled across it on Netflix. McConaughey is a good to excellent actor, so I thought why not? UGH! I couldn't believe he'd agreed to star in this. The title alone is terrible, LOL! I see now it's listed as a comedy [slash] drama, but for me it failed on both scores.

So much depends on our expectations. You expected it to be worse than it was, while I expected it to be better than it was.

I expected Tremors to be terrible, yet I ended up loving it. Thought MIB (the original) was impossibly overhyped so didn't even want to see it, but did years later, and loved it.

Oh, the title is awful! I don't consider it to be much of a comedy to be honest. But it does really depend on your expectations. From the trailer I thought it's going to be just a bunch of striping and that's it (that's why I wasn't too keen on seeing it). So I was pleasantly surprised that the characters were treated like people and the subject matter was more on the serious side. But as far as "male streepers" movies go, I'd take The Full Monty over Magic Mike any day.

BTW, I loved Tremors as well. Such a fun movie!

That makes sense. I can see why Magic Mike was a pleasant surprise for you.

The Full Monty was hilarious! I loved it. It was also the first English-language film I'd ever seen where I needed subtitles to understand 50% or more of the dialogue.

Tremors really was fun! Even the sequel was pretty good.

I love The Full Monty. It's one of those movies where I can just put it on, and every time it makes me laught and feel good. I'm mostly alright with the accents in it, but if it's anything Scottish... forget about it!

“Mr. Right” (2015)

Basic Summary: Girl falls for the “PERFECT” guy… well, perfect except he’s a hit man.

In general, I extremely dislike RomComs and Anna Kendrick. But how do you pass up Sam Rockwell and Tim Roth?!? You can’t! So with low expectations, I hit the play button. Turns out, it was a rather enjoyable, quirky adventure. Recommend if you enjoy odd comedies.

She’s just not my cup of tea. Usually I find her voice and mannerisms annoying…. However after the first thirty minutes of ‘Mr. Right’, I actually enjoyed her quirkiness.
