What Book Are You Currently Reading.

And what was the book you read before it?

Current = Gardens Of The Moon, Book 1 of the Malazan Empire series by Steven Erikson.

Previous = Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

This is specifically a "movie" forum and of course, not stated, but also a t.v. series forum. Why would you be reading books when you could just watch them?

reply

Well I posted this under General Discussion, which means talking about anything in general and not just tv or movies.

Also, not all books are turned into visual media, but the books that are are usually much better than the quick fix of visual media. Mostly I prefer the books. I guess you don't read too many. I listen to them nowadays as I can get through more that way.

Reading was something, I admit, I should have done more of. All through high school and when I had taken my SATs, my reading comprehension was pretty low. Reading is definitely needed for better critical thinking skills. When I graduated through college, I tried to read as much as possible. I was grateful when facebook had their news trending section and reading has definitely gotten through that way. I still may lack critical thinking or comprehension and I strive to strengthen that skill.

If you have a smart phone then you can get some headphones and have a book read to you. Then listen to it when you are doing shopping or housework or driving to and from places. Even listen to a chapter before you go to sleep.

You don't have to be restricted to physical books now that tie down all your time and attention and you really would be surprised at how many you can get through by this method. It's never to late to 'pick up a book' by this method :)

The only problem would be comprehension, my friend. What good is listening if I cannot comprehend?

Then again, who knows? I could possibly be an auditory learner. For me, I feel that I may be a tactile learner.

Actually, scratch the above. I still have no idea what kind of learner I am.

The only way to know is to test yourself. Start off by thinking on what type of films & series you like and then look for a book in that category. Look for something you have already seen and liked to start with, so comprehending the story mostly won't be a problem (though some adaptations have a habit of changing storylines). It's a good way to start off.

If you come across words you don't understand, write then dowm and look online for what they mean.

You are right. The only way I have learned anything is by testing myself. One thing I fear is that word though, test. Whether it be an exam or a test, I get anxious and do not do as well as I know I could.

I am currently reading (2)

1. Raising Positive Kids in a Negative World (Zig Ziglar) and...
2. Orphan Train (Christina Baker Kline).

The previous book was: Dracula by Bram Stoker

'Too Like the Lightning' by Ada Palmer, some kind of Sci-Fi that has some rather disturbing stuff going on and I almost quit, but had to pick it up again because it's so intriguing.

reply

That sounds interesting from the reviews. Will check it out.

If you read it, take the warnings page seriously. I feel slightly traumatized. I'm a bit sensitive, ok, but I read a lot of horror novels in my life and they never managed to disturb me this way. Still, this book is brilliant in a way. I really want to read the other three but I don't think I have the guts.

The Life of John Wesley Hardin As Written by Himself.

Some of you might have come to known Mr Hardin through the Time Life Series of books, “The Gunfighters”, in which he was introduced “as an outlaw so mean he once shot a man for snoring too loudly”.
Some of you might not know this however. When Mr Hardin was sentenced to prison for a period of 20 years, he made the most of his time there, studying mathematics, theology, law, and finally passing the legal bar, and becoming a practicing attorney upon his release.

I am currently reading The Ages of Chaos by Marion Zimmer Bradley.
Unfortunately, I haven't had as much time to read as I would like recently, so I've been on this book for a while and can't remember what I read directly before it. It's a great book, I've just been busy and distracted.

I'm usually reading more than one at a time. Right now:

As Big as the West - The Pioneer Life of Granville Stuart (1834-1918) by Clyde A. Milner II & Carol A. O'Connor - from Iowa to the gold rush in California to settling the new Montana territory to vigilante to US diplomat.

A Lucky Irish Lad by Kevin O'Hara - growing up Irish in small-town America in the 1950s and 60s.

Grace Like a River by Christopher Parkening, classical guitarist and world-class fly fisherman.
