What movies did you watch last week? (03/27-04/02)

Comment on mine, I will comment on yours.

Shackles (2005 DVD): I expected the usual gritty prison/racial movie but this one is mainly about a teacher that try to save his career by taking a class in a dangerous prison where he will bring hope to his students through slam poetry. As I did some myself, it was real fun to see this topic being used. And it was used with great taste. Everything about the movie was pretty decent (especially considering the budget), the acting, the cinematography, the plot and so on but, Unfortunately, the two main actors have irritating voices. It took some time but After a while, I got past that. 6.5/10

Moonrise kingdom (2012 Bluray): A wonderful little gem of a movie. It's skillfully directed and beautifully shot. With the music, the whole thing feels like a dream or a far memory replaying before your eyes. It really reached the child in me. I noticed that Wes Anderson's style is very similar to Jean-Pierre Jeunet's. They both have an original and colorful way to tell a story. 8/10

Sphere (1998 DVD): A strange mix of great actors makes for a strange movie that could've been great but was not. The story was interesting and there was some good qualities like the visuals, the atmosphere, the sound and the characters but some of the dialogues and parts of the script lacked punch. For example, the scene where a member of the crew gets killed by jellyfishes was not strong enough to make us feel. Most of the horror scenes failed to shock or scare but the sci-fi aspect was good. Unfortunately they had to try hard to make it a horror movie. Also, you’ll stop caring about the actual sphere before the movie end as they fail to keep it interesting. The final twist was also underwhelming. It sure did not have the shock effect they were going for. 5/10

Predator (1987 DVD): I was two years old when this came out so I saw bits and parts through the years but this was my first time watching it entirely. I would give a 6/10 to the first hour of the movie, as it was not as thrilling as I thought it would be. Then I would give a 8/10 to the last 40mins. Because once there’s only Arny left, it gets very thrilling and entertaining. I’ll give it a generous 7/10 overall.

Soldier (1998 Bluray): I really enjoyed that one. The cinematography, the settings, the costumes, everything looked very nice. And the movie just flew by! That’s always a good sign. The concept of ‘born and raised’ to be soldier was made interesting and Kurt Russel played his role with stone cold finesse. The story has a few none sense moments but there is so many great scenes that the flaws don’t matter. My new favourite from Paul Anderson. 8/10

Timecop (1994DVD): When I first saw it as a teen I thought it was one of the most badass movies ever made. 15 years later it’s still a pretty cool movie but it lost lots of its impressiveness to me. I still think some of the scenes inspired many action movie makers of the next years. 6/10

I finished binge watching all of Suits and watched A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It was a great tear jerker but I felt Dorothy McGuire was the weak link in that movie. It wasn't just because her character was the practical one who had to sacrifice her own dreams for her family's, it was partly because she was either miscast for the role or wasn't capable of generating the requisite empathy. Dunn, Garner and Blondell were great though. Didn't know Ed Sheeran was a child actor...

Suits is a pretty good series but isn't well "suited" for binge watching... it gets almost comical when Harvey and Donna repeat their catch phrases endlessly in that short a time span. Same with Louis and his assholish behavior... he says or does something reprehensible, someone points it out to him, he shows regret and then rinse/repeat. It doesn't make any sense that you can be that brilliant and stupid simultaneously.

Soldier is really underrated, it's a fun movie.

I watched:

Life - Really liked it. I must say that I'm quite easy to please when it comes to scifi/horror/creature films. It wasn't perfect but it was just the kind of movie I enjoy seeing at the cinema. Visuals were great and the ending was perfect. I will be watching this again when hits blu ray. 8/10

The Discovery - I've been looking forward to this and it did not dissapoint. Jason Segel is turning out to be a great dramatic actor. I hope Netflix keeps putting out quality films like this. 8/10

Young Offenders - Funny and heartwarming movie about two young Irish guys who go searching for a missing bag of cocaine. Nice little film. 7/10

Patriots Day - This was a nice surprice. I didn't think I would like it but within 15 minutes I was hooked and it just kept getting better. Some of the action/chase scenes were so tense that my palms were actually sweaty. It was also surprisingly touching. 8/10

The great wall - Just.. terrible.. I didn't even finish it so I won't rate it. I usually like Matt Damon but he couldn't save this mess.

Silence - I knew going into it that it propably wouldn't be my type of movie. Beautifully shot and the acting was fine but I just found it so slow and downright boring at times. Reminded me of Malick's style. 6/10

Drive - I think this was my fourth time watching it. Nicolas Winding Refn's best movie. A real piece of art! 8,5/10

reply

Cool, I will check The discovery.
Not a fan of Gosling. Otherwise, Drive was not too bad.

reply

Yeah I also think Drive is a great movie

It should be 04/01 right?

My job does travel reimbursement that way. They count the end of the week on a Sunday, not a Saturday. If it includes today, well Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. Too bad. Every time this movie passes, I am unable to do the movie eating challenge. Ah well, one of these days.

reply

Your right.

I got all three movies but the first one is the best Harold and Kumar

reply

I dare you to do the eating challenge for the movie. Buy 30 sliders, 4 (large) fries, and 4 large cherry cokes. Try to finish all that before the movie ends and....................................................................................................................

enjoy!

reply

I haven't seen it, and having read the posts about it, doubt I will, although I was somewhat intrigued at first.

As far as the eating challenge, NO WAY could I do it, even if I were given 12 hours to complete it. Even if there were a White Castle within thousands of miles from me.

reply

It's an okay movie. I liked it because I could relate to it in so many ways and especially because I grew up in California and now live in KY, close to a WHITE CASTLE!!!

But same. I think in my life here so far, I have bought 3 crave cases (case of 30 sliders); however, I have never been able to buy it when this movie came on. I came close to doing it and then I had a job loss and I was like "WOW, I guess not even the heavens wants me to try this." So now I am frugal, living on 3 months worth of savings, a part time, and hoping I can watch it whenever I get enough extra cash. I am not sure when that will be.

reply

I'm curious, in what ways could you relate to it?

I doubt we have anything like "crave cases" here, but 30 sliders is a hell of a lot and I can't imagine finishing it, let alone with multiple orders of fries.

reply

Well I am an ethnic group similar to one of the two characters; when I had an acceptable food budget, I loved to eat food at night, and I love to go on adventures or "wherever life takes me". Not to mention, when I saw this movie the first time, I had wondered what White Castle was. After I had graduated from the university that I had attended, I had found, driving around, that there was a White Castle near me. I decided to try it and I loved it!

So it went to say that this movie became kind of a favorite of mine and whenever it comes on, I cannot help but rewatch it. The only problem is, since I suffered the job loss, the cable and the food budget went out the window. The only way I can watch it now is by going on bootleg websites, where I can watch this movie, as when IMDb says that it will come on. I can simulate it to where I actually feel like I am watching it on cable.

reply

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for explaining. I love to go on adventures too.

Sorry to hear you've suffered the loss of a job, and your food and cable budget went out the window. That sucks.

reply

Oh it's horrible. Now I know why people say that it is up there with death in terms of stress. I do not think I have ever felt my stomach lurch so much. The only feeling that compares is either going down really fast in an airplane or going on a roller coaster, high up, and then just getting stuck on the track, at the top, looking down. I have been in the former situation of a plane, but never the roller coaster situation.

reply

I've been there before in my life, so I get it.

Yes, it's tough, and stressful, but try to remember things can and usually do turn around. Also that if you're doing what you can each day, to change things, you can't do more than that. One.Day.At.A.Time. Sometimes it can mean thinking only about 5 minutes at a time, or an hour at a time, to reduce your stress level.

reply

It's the bills catbookss. The bills. I am thinking nature has a way of telling me to start budgeting. I went at a stretch of three full years where I had steady income, no matter freelance (sporadic and still was able to pay my bills), part time work (still able to pay them), full time and then the sinker. I rushed back up to salvage a savings and now I am just captaining a shaky boat.

reply

I hear you, Arvin. Been there, done that. Budgeting is always a good thing, no matter what your income is.

The main thing now (budgeting aside) is to keep your stress level down as much as you can and keep your focus on moving forward, as you can. Don't expend your energy thinking too much into the future -- for now. It'll help keep your stress down, and that will help you move forward.

I live in Canada and we don't have White Castles. Although that would be a waste of money because after 2 or 3 I'd be done. Maybe in my younger days when I was on the munchies 24/7...

reply

That is a bummer. Try to look in the freezer aisles of your local grocery store. I know in California, that is how they do it. I was so ecstatic when I moved to KY and saw an actual White Castle franchise. It made the stay a lot more homely.

Additionally, I notice that if I lift weights every three days, even if it is just something little like bicep or forearm curls, my metabolism goes up. I have never tried actually eating white castle after an intensive workout week like that.

reply

I most definitely am hungry after gym. I'll check my grocery store.

reply

People say that the ones in the freezers do not taste as good as the real thing, from the actual franchise. Idk...I have become so addicted to both. Before I boycotted buying anything from Walmart, I got one of each. Yeah, that's right. I bought them from the freezer section AND the real things from a White Castle near me and they both had their own yummy-ness factor. There is something about the way the meat and the fried onions go together. They also knew how to make it. Apparently, if you look at any White Castle slider, they have 5 holes in the patty and those five holes are to air out the meat and also for the onion juices to soak into it. The result is a flavorful burger.

reply

Huuurrrghh, want some!

reply

Make sure you savior it when you buy it. I have a bad habit of enjoying them a bit too fast. I think they are best to have when your stomach is half full, so you really can eat it slowly. I would so go out and buy some, but I am broke. Every dollar has to go to a bill.

reply

I enjoyed Sphere, but agree it was a strange movie that could have been great, but wasn't.

Haven't seen any of the others.

Finally have finished Lost, although I fell asleep during some of the episodes in seasons 5 and 6. It hooked me in the beginning, but then I began losing interest.

I watched To Kill A Mockingbird for the 8th or so time, or maybe that was the week before. In any event, it was as remarkable and wonderful as I remembered, except the opening credits, which I'd either skipped over or otherwise missed for years, struck me as extraordinary, and surprisingly modern.

Don't think I saw anything else. Oh wait, yes, I watched The Legend of 1900 again when my internet connection was down. As good as I remembered it being, which is great.

Transpecos : Great suspense throughout most of the movie but also ended ambiguously with lingering, unanswered questions.
The Duel : A somewhat different western; a 21st century premise in 1860's Texas. Also held my attention but also contained much ambiguity.
Cropsey : Interesting and disturbing documentary. Also ambiguous and controversial as well.
Ambiguity is a good thing. It stimulates questions and thought provoking discussion.

reply

I agree. One of my fav movie, Y tu mama tambien, is quite ambiguous and its the charm.

Cool, thanks for the post.

You watched some really good classics last week! Shadow of a Doubt is my favorite Hitchcock movie. The actors are so good in that one. Clockwork Orange is so surreal and scary. Then Shop Around the Corner to lighten up the whole thing. That one has such a happy ending. Thanks for the list, I'd like to see 11:14. I've never heard of it.

I also love Moonrise Kingdom.

reply

I was there so long ago
The sky was bruised
The wine was bled
And there you led me on

reply

I feel like I've seen Sphere, but I also feel like I'm mistaking it for a few other movies lol

I really like Jean-Pierre Jeunet's style, it reminds me a bit of Terry Gilliam. I haven't seen Moonrise Kingdom yet, for some reason Wes Anderson irks me at the moment. Though the man has a pretty cool style.

If I don't count all the halfs of movies I saw during the week (there were lots), the only thing I saw in it's entirety is 'And then there were none' (2015 mini series). It's an adaptation of an Agatha Christie book. A group of strangers is invited to an isolated island under various pretexes. All have a terrible secret. One by one they start getting killed. Aidan Turner's body is a gift from the gods! Things devolve into heavy paranoia. Overall I liked it, though I'm not a huge fan of murder mysteries. It had some nice visuals and I enjoyed most of the performances and the atmosphere. I give it 7/10 little soldiers.

reply

Terry Gilliam is one of my top directors. Love his style.
