How many times ...

Do you go to the board of a film or show that you really liked, only to find a bunch of people slagging it, for (more often than not) petty reasons?

I'm not talking about MC posters, because this is a new site and frankly I haven't seen a lot of that happening with new posts or threads, but I see a lot of it with the old IMDB threads, and remember the same happening when I went to various boards on IMDB.

I've been looking up various films or shows I either liked or loved to contribute new posts or threads here, and more often than not backing out of the board for this reason.

I certainly don't expect everyone to have the same tastes that I do, or mind well-reasoned criticism, but damn, there sure is a lot of ragging going on more than not.

It's a generation thing. The current one has to tear down a lot of things to make other things seem better because what they have in their lives is so awful, from current modern music, movies, and television to job opportunities. Nothing from this time period will ever be considered a classic until nearly everyone from previous generations is dead and this one has torn it all down so they can pretend their time was special in order to cope.

reply

You really think that's it? I get some of it being generational, from one side or the other -- probably both, actually. But that's always been the case.

Seems to me the main problem is it's cool (read: safe) to criticize and tear things down, but not to praise them.

reply

It's easy to criticize the younger adult generation because they're so vocal about being bitter but the truth is that everyone gets less content when there are too many choices....and we definitely have too many entertainment choices! I am subscribed to 9 different streaming channels including Sling and last night I still had "nothing to watch" and ended up falling asleep to an old sitcom again.

reply

Yeah, it's a sheeple thing, an all or nothing mindset. No objectivity whatsoever, actual critiquing; hence the blanket statements indicative of intellectual laziness.

reply

Using the term ‘sheeple’ is a sign of ‘intellectual laziness’ professor.

Oh sure, I get that too, and admit that sometimes that's why I've gone to some boards -- to see if others were similarly disappointed. But very often I go to the board of something I've just seen that I thought was wonderful, and see the inevitable "WORST FILM/SHOW EVER MADE!!1" types of threads, and it feels like someone just p!ssed in my Cheerios, so I don't bother responding.

I don't expect everyone to like (let alone love) the same films and shows I do, or dislike the same ones I do, but stupid and over the top criticism seems to have become the norm.

Yes! It's gotten very old.

People use the internet as their punching bag. It's an easy way of getting out their negativity/repressed feelings and having a lot of people notice without having to be seen or take responsibility. Movies and television are catalysts for interaction therefore these forums are convenient.

I think you're right. It's the same thing as road rage: board (or bored) rage.

reply

Board rage is about right

Good comparison.

There seem to be a lot of extremes on the Internet. Something either has to be "The best ever..." or "The worst ever...". There's very little middle ground.

And it might be that negative emotions are a bigger motivator. How ofter do people take to the streets when they're happy, versus when they're unhappy. The expectation is that a movie/show's going to be good, or that you'll get something positive out of it. So when that doesn't happen, you get the opposite effect of great disappointment, and you want to vent. Whether it's to someone IRL or to a bunch of strangers online.
