Really, I find my ideas from fast food places. Arby's seems to have really stepped up to the plate. They just pile on meats and toppings like there is no tomorrow. I am not sure if that started last year or what; however, I have started to notice that.
shareI used to go to Arby's when I lived in Arizona, in the mid 80's. Loved their sandwiches! They were piled pretty high then too. Now, in California, I can't find one near me. π’
shareMy guilty pleasure is a cheese sandwich microwaved for about 20 second. Simple but oh so good. Sometimes I put some seasoning salt or salt and pepper on it. My favorite snack in bed at night with a good movie :)
share[deleted]
Yeah...I gotta have mine toasted.
shareI am guessing it is just thrown cold in a microwave. Does a bread toast in a microwave? The only time I have ever had bread in a microwave is to soften it when it gets stale.
shareSame here arvin. And, no, bread does not toast in a microwave but can get hard as a rock if left in one 1 second too long. Stale bread is good for making toast in the toaster or making croutons and your own turkey dressing...or bread crumbs for coating meats and what have you.
shareI cannot believe this post was deleted. Good thing we can still look up topics, we responded to, on our profiles. I was actually going to try this grilled cheese microwave thing.
shareNope. Not toasted.
When I was a kid my cousin asked me if I wanted a cheese sandwich. I assumed he meant Grilled. When he put it in the microwave I looked at him like he was nuts! I was surprised how good it was and have been addicted for 30 years now.
I may be going off on a tangent; but, my guilty pleasure is a microwaved bean and cheese burrito. There is something about the combination of bean and cheese. I will definitely have to try microwaving cheese in-between two pieces of bread (I have to have wheat though) or does it only work with white bread?
Somehow, when I think of grilled cheese, it has to be on a pan. I wonder why I have never thought of microwaving it. Weird...
I also do it all the time, I just toast the bread first so it's not soggy.
I make pizza breads in the microwave too..
So bread gets soggy in a microwave? Interesting.
sharecheese is oily.
shareI would not know. It has never crossed my mind to make a grill cheese via microwave.
shareI can't speak for the other person who actually mentioned this. But sometimes I don't want to eat extra fat like butter or mayo or I just don't want to dirty any pans.
When you start seeing ice cream, butter, and mayo as fat; you know that you are becoming a health nut. I seriously have a hard time eating ice cream, now seeing that. Then again, it was free cone day at Dairy Queen and I downed an ice cream cone. Oops. I guess when I am really hungry and I am getting it for free, my boycotts go out the window.
shareFor me. It has to be white brea . I nuke the cheese on one piece of bread for like 10 seconds. Then flip the warmed cheese onto another piece of bread and give it another 10. Then put it together and give it a few more seconds. You can not put the whole sandwich in for 30. The bread gets too hot IMO. I also like the cheese just Barely melted. So over heating is real easy to do if you don't watch it. over melting the cheese ruine it.
I have it down to a scienc .
I actually have the means to make it now. I am sort of screwing with my budget by buying things and I thought I would get some cheese and bread today. Will definitely try your way. Microwave grilled cheese it is!
shareI just did it.
10 seconds on one slice of bread and then 10 seconds on the other slice. I closed them and put it in for another 5.
On the second 10 seconds, the cheese began to bubble; however, it has a nice gooey texture. :D
dats nasty poor people food. pass!
shareYou are such a ball buster lol.
shareIt actually makes the grilled cheese more upper class. WOW!
Way better than pan made grilled cheese by far!
And yup, I just did that today. It was way better than just an original slice of kraft cheese in between two slices of bread. I think you have nailed one definite comfort snack. The salt and pepper is a nice touch!
shareAwesome that you tried it. Kraft I stay away from, not a big fan of processed cheeseβ.
shareWhat cheese do you use for the slices?
shareArmstrong medium cheddar is fine. Block cheese. Slices are weird to me, like pre-sliced I mean. Kraft American cheese slices are not real cheese to me π
I cut them about half a centimeter thick or so.
Usually I just buy this generic, no name cheese from Walmart or Safeway. As it's the best price! The packaging is plain transparent plastic with a pink, orange or green sticker on it. I think the color identifies between light, mild and medium types of cheese? The sticker mentions the price and KG (around 700-800g). The price is always the same, but the size varies a bit, so I search for the biggest block βΊ
I will try it with that and get back to you. I need to get it down exactly and tell you my experience on it. I kind of boycott Walmart and I do not think there are any Safeway's; however,I think I could buy it from Meijer or Kroger.
shareGeezus! I went to my Meijer on the way back from my part time and I could not find that Armstrong brand anywhere! I found so many other brands varied on the taste of cheddar (mostly sharp). Of course I wanted to see if the brand you were writing about was there, but to no avail. I ended up leaving the store with nothing. I did enjoy the Kraft with this method though.
shareLOL Wow that sucks. I think most any cheddar cheese will do. Personally I avoid sharp for my guilty pleasure sandwich though.
Nice to hear that you have had the microwavedβ sandwich and tried to find the other cheese. Most people think I'm nuts, or being poor white trash (which I'm not).
I love a Reuben or a grilled cheese with mushrooms and onions.
I made Monte Cristos the other night. They were delicious. Ham and Swiss. One side spread mayo, other side spread Dijon. Dip the whole thing in eggs. Fry it up and sprinkle confectioners sugar on top(lightly).
share[deleted]
I thought it sounded weird too but...... the egg dip makes it almost like a ham sandwich with a French toast outside. The confectioners sugar is perfect on it. It is absolutely decadent.
shareMy Seasonal Preferences:
Cooler weather: a hot Patty Melt which is 'healthy' bread to offset the double layers of cheese, roast beef, grilled onions with ALL the drippings it can hold (yeah, it is a mess)
Warmer weather: Egg & Olive which is finely chopped mixed with mayo to preferred consistency, and
an old-fashioned BLT (minus the T. I do not eat T raw except on a burger, go figure).
After 2 pages of delectable salivary gland inducing scrumptious handheld meals I'm in serious need of relief!!!!!!! π Thanks Everyone!
You can have my L and I'll take your T. Can't stand lettuce. Wish it weren't true because it's in so many things. I've tried to "like" it many times and I end up gagging. I tend to think that it may be a texture thing. That and the sound it makes in my head when chewing it.
Oh, and I like raw tomatoes and tomato soup but not tomato juice or ketchup. Yep, I'm pretty strange... π
Deal. Yeah, I rather like tomato soup. It's robust. The juice and ketchup, I agree.
sharein-n-out burger
shareWe have In-N-Out here too but, we also have another place called, Habit-Burger, that I love tons more! πππ
shareI swore by in-n-out for a long time until I had Habit, thought they were great, and they are right around the corner, well, so is in-n-out but now I always go to Habit, and they have a lot more, like the fish sandwich, love them.
shareYeah, Habit is pretty awesome alright! They're just a few blocks up from me. In-N-Out is about 5 miles away and I don't really care much for them anyway. I've always preferred char-broiled burgers. I think Habit's prices are pretty reasonable for what you get too...which is a pretty good amount of food! I haven't tried anything but their burgers yet but would love to try their fish sandwich soon! πππ
sharewell, the fish is really good, however, you have to like fish, lol
shareThanks for the rec. Of course...I love fish! π
shareI usually go with my brother, he always gets the fish, I don't, I love the burgers
shareThat's like me. I KNOW I love the burgers so, often times, I won't try new things for fear of wasting money on something I'm unsure if I will like it or not. I'm pretty sure all of Habit's sandwiches are good though, I just have to stop craving their burgers long enough to try something new.
